I'd like to see changes in the service time rules

This farce of having to keep players in the minors for 2 weeks to avoid them accruing a full year of service time needs to end. But if not that, what should the rule be?

No matter where the line is drawn, the teams will maneuver to have players fall just short of it, so how do you stop that?

What if you made the rule 7 years, but any year counts if you accrued 60 days of service time that year?

Teams will always try to work around the service time issue, no matter how it is set. There will always be some loophole to try and exploit. So at 55 days, someone might get optioned to the minors.

It would be nice if something could be done about it.

I know Tom Tango, on his blog, keeps holding up the NHL free agency and compensation model as one of the best in pro sports. I'm not entirely sure how it works, or how it applies in this case, but maybe they do it better. Maybe some hockey fan on the board can provide some insight.

I know they have some different rules that bring a player's age into account. So someone like Jeremy Guthrie wouldn't have to wait until he's nearly a grandfather to get to free agency.
