Tatum was rated the best defensive catcher in the Reds system in 2008 and will compete for the back-up spot in Baltimore. Tatum only has one option year remaining after being added to the Reds' 40 man roster at the end of 2007 and optioned in Spring Training of 2008 and 2009.

Part Six: Outright Retained

Players whom were removed from the Orioles 40-Man roster, cleared waivers, and were outrighted to the minor leagues. These players do not have 6YR minor league free agency status nor have they been outrighted before, so they must stay within the Orioles organization. These players are eligible to be selected in the Rule 5 Draft.

RHP Chris Lambert

Age:

Draft:
Selected by St. Louis Cardinals in 1st Round (19th overall) of 2004 amateur entry draft

Background Information:
Lambert was claimed off waivers from the Detroit Tigers in August 2008. Ironically, Lambert was DFA'ed from Detroit's roster to make room for the newly acquired Aubrey Huff. Lambert's first season of rookie ball doesn't count as a full season so he falls under six years of professional service. This was his first time clearing waivers and being outrighted so he should remain with the Orioles.

RHRP Bob McCrory

Age:

Draft:
Selected by Baltimore Orioles in 4th Round (104th overall) of 2003 amateur entry draft
2009 Team(s) & Statistics:

Background Information:
McCrory was added to the 40 man roster following the 2007 season. He pitched sparingly for the Orioles the past two years and has been unimpressive in all of his stints. In his latest stint in September, he injured his shoulder requiring surgery.

RHRP Jim Miller

Age:
28
Draft:
Selected by Colorado Rockies in 8th Round (230th overall) of 2004 amateur entry draft

Background Information:
Miller was one of two players the Orioles received from Colorado for Rodrigo Lopez following the 2006 season. Miller made his major league debut with Baltimore in September 2008 and was battling for a spot in the bullpen in 2009 before suffering an injury. He was never called up in 2009, making the writing clear that he would be removed from the roster following the season.
RHP Alfredo Simon
Age:
28
Draft:
Signed as an undrafted free agent by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1999
2009 Team(s) & Statistics:
Team	League	W	L	ERA	G	GS	CG	SHO	SV	IP	H	R	ER	HR	BB	SO	GO/AO	AVGMLB 0	1	9.95	2	2	0	0	0	6.1	8	7	7	5	2	3	0.50	.308
Background Information:
Simon signed with the Orioles as a minor league free agent in September 2008 and was quickly called up to the main roster and impressed enough to earn a spot in the 2009 rotation, though he suffered an injury requiring Tommy John surgery in his second start, thus beginning the era of Brad Bergesen.

Background Information:
After missing 2007 with an injury, Keefer returned to the Orioles as a minor league free agent in 2008 and put up average numbers. In 2009, Keefer’s numbers were horrendous and he was released mid-season.
LHP John Parrish

Players who are Minor League Free Agents after being removed from the 40 man roster and meeting either the requirement of being out-righted before and thus able to declare free agency or having 6YRMiLBFA status.

Background Information:
After putting up abyssmal numbers in Bowie early in the season, Fio was moved to Norfolk where he was on fire most of the season, earning a promotion to Baltimore on September 1st, though the trades of Freddy Guzman and Joey Gathright, as well as the injuries to Reimold and Pie helped his cause. Fiorentino held his own in the majors and will likely seek out a team where he can compete for a bench spot in 2010.

Background Information:
Hill was acquired for cash considerations from the Chicago Cubs prior to the 2009 season. The Cubs had no room on their roster to store the option-less Hill and hope he could contribute. The Orioles acquired him with the understanding that the player they would give up for him was based on his effectiveness. Hill missed most of Spring Training and spent four games in the minores rehabbing before coming up with a labrum tear mid-season.

Here is the most up to date of Version 1.0, so to speak.

Within the next couple days, the Orioles should begin announcing their first round of cuts from the 40 man roster, but until then, all I can provide are minor league free agents.

Any idea what Hennesey and Parrish's injuries were?

Any idea what Hennesey and Parrish's injuries were?

I can't find more up to date articles but here is one from ST:

Baltimore Orioles

Hennessey, thought to be an early favorite for one of three vacant rotation slots, has been sidelined with a sore right elbow. And Parrish, who has starting experience, has been nursing an irritated left shoulder. Both pitchers have had cortisone shots, and Trembley indicated that neither has rebounded as well as expected.

  • 2 weeks later...

So today is the first update to the thread.

I had to split the OP into 3 posts, instead of 2, as including more information on the players is taking up a lot of space.

Today, we saw Sean Henn lost on waivers to the Toronto Blue Jays, as well as Jim Miller, Jeff Fiorentino, Chris Lambert, and Guillermo Rodriguez outrighted from the 40 man roster. Neither Lambert nor Miller meet the requirements for minor league free agency so they should remain in the Orioles organization for 2010. Fiorentino and Rodriguez do meet the requirements for minor league free agency so they should test the waters.

I wouldn't mind seeing the O's pick up a few the following guys:

Nate Spears

Wes Bankston

Josh Barfield

Rich Rundles

Ryan Harvey

Reggie Abercrombie

Chris Lubanski

Hector Luna

Erick Threets

Jerome Williams

Gary Majewski

Dallas McPherson

Kevin Howard

I miss anyone of interest?

Some pitchers I would perhaps take a flier on would be:

Ryan Speier

Virgil Vasquez

Osiris Matos

Ryan Sadowski

Randy Messenger

Winston Abreu (former Oriole who puts up staggering AAA numbers, maybe worth another try to succeed out of the pen)

Of course none of these should be any more than minor league depth signings, but guys who could potentially help the big league club at some point. Also, Arizona outfielder Trent Oeltjen would be great to have at AAA if injuries were to strike the big league club.
