  1. He's not a product of the old regime, he was taken by Elias in the 2019 draft along with Adley, Gunnar and Ortiz.
  2. The article said that the naming rights were initially supposed to be announced today, but that the corporate sponsor was essentially blindsided by the sale so no announcement today. The WSJ was relatively critical of Angelos here. A few snippets below. The company that thought it was about to plaster its name around Camden Yards didn’t know anything about a possible sale until learning about it in the initial news reports. John Angelos acknowledges he can be capricious, prone to whims and changes-of-heart that make him unlike the careful corporate figures found in most owners’ boxes. He negotiated on and off with Rubenstein for three years, frequently leaving people around him wondering where things stood and what his true intentions were. He played down the intensity of his flirtation with Rubenstein to the end, to the point that many inside MLB didn’t know the sale was finally going forward until about a week before it was finalized. Yet the most surprising thing about John Angelos’s tenure as the head of the Orioles might just have been his lack of sentimentality. He can conjure up affection for Brooks Robinson like any good Baltimorean, but he made a deliberate effort not to wear Orioles merchandise or even the color orange. Angelos’s dispassion for his own ball club stands in contrast to that of Rubenstein, who described himself in a statement as being an Orioles fan for his “entire life.”
  3. Without researching every teams projected rotation right now, I'd bet there are about 26-27 teams at least that would kill to have Dean Kremer as their #5 starter. I'd turn the focus to getting another impact reliever.
  4. Sure, I don't disagree with that assessment. But we are talking Kremer, Cowser/Kjerstad/Westburg and a couple of other impact pieces in all likelihood v. Cease. I'd rather keep the prospects and roll with Kremer or use prospect capital to get an impact reliever.
  5. I would be hesitant to give up much to replace Kremer in the rotation with Cease. I think you are paying a premium there for what could very well only be a marginal upgrade. Of course if we get the 2022 version of Cease that's a huge upgrade, but otherwise I don't view it as a significant upgrade.
  6. While the specifics of a deal like this are vastly different, typically in an M&A transaction once the deal terms have been agreed upon but before the transaction actually closes, there are restrictions on what the seller can do to the business during that interim period. I've never done a sale of a sports franchise and I am sure that there are significant structural differences, but I'd think there was a bit of a holding pattern on making anything beyond minor moves in some way.
  7. I think Mayo's bat is much more major league ready than Holliday's.
  8. This is an overgeneralization. Certain governmental approvals are required for private transactions all the time and the government is told before announced to the public. I don't know if that was necessary here, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if there was a notice requirement for a change of control of the lessee in the lease.
  9. Andy Kostka now reporting the news on twitter as well.
  10. They probably have rights to contest the purchase price, obtain their own appraisals, etc. There are usually a lot of guardrails built in and the terms get heavily negotiated when the investment is made.
  11. It's a market provision to prevent minority holders from blocking a sale of a business. I'd be absolutely shocked if the partnership agreement doesn't include a mechanism like that.
  12. I would assume there is a drag-along provision in the partnership agreement that requires the minority investors to sell their interest in this scenario.
  13. If Bradish doesn't take that liner off the foot his first start in Texas, he very well may have won the Cy Young. He may ultimately settle into being more of a #2-3 guy, but at this moment in my eyes he is a clear #1 starter.
  14. This is correct, although you need a lot more attorneys than just tax attorneys. However,, I've seen plenty of deals fall apart because the client will just simply not listen to the advice of their team of bankers and attorneys.
  15. Elias does not strike me as the type of guy who is going to just pay someone for the name alone.
  16. I selfishly don't like it, I'm a displaced fan in the central time zone. 5:30 weeknight start times are rough for me, the games are usually over before I get home from the office. But they should make decisions based on the people who might actually go to the games.
  17. That's probably because Basallo along with Maikol Hernandez was the first "big" international prospect signed under Elias. Tavera actually got a $1.7MM signing bonus compared to Basallo's $1.3MM.
  18. I think it's safe to assume if Tavera is ranked this highly it is because there are very encouraging scouting reports to go along with the stat line. Of course, Tony isn't ranking any of these people on stat lines alone.
  19. Silver Slugger, unanimous ROY and 8th place MVP finish...not a bad rookie year.
  20. I mean it is 3 times in 10 years at this point.
  21. I don't think there's much of a concern about Bradish's innings this year. He threw 144 last year between the minors and majors.
  22. Without looking into detail at every other contenders' starting rotations, I think it's fair to say the O's probably are in a unique position in terms of every single starter other than Gibson, and I guess Flaherty now, being on track to blow past their previous career highs in IP. I am pretty sure Elias himself has acknowledged this.
  23. One thing that really stands out to me in Frobby's post, over the last 72 games Gunnar has been worth 3.6rWAR...that is an outstanding pace.
  24. If after watching how the Mets play defensively all weekend he couldn't have anticipated a reasonable probability that ball wouldn't be caught he is even more of a lost cause than I thought.
