  1. Mayo doesn't even have to play average 3B defense to be valuable there in the majors if he hits anything like he has the potential to. He just has to not be hideous, like minus 10 to 15 runs at 3B.
  2. Because Roy Firestone thinks we're an inch from franchise doom no matter how well the team is doing. It's incredibly tiresome.
  3. I'd give it a 10% chance he clears waivers. Some team will slot him in the back of their pen or think that they can unlock him.
  4. I guess I'm wrong. Thanks for the info.
  5. Well, maybe that hasn't been the story this year, but I remember him being a soft contact guy in years past.
  6. Exactly this. And even when Cionel does give up runs, it's usually seeing eye ground balls. He's a bit wild, but he doesn't give up a lot of hard contact.
  7. Cal said "maybe" Jackson came to the majors too soon. He mostly blamed "nerves" for Jackson's poor performance. I think most everyone on the boards has said as much. This doesn't come off as overstepping to me.
  8. If he's claimed, and he almost certainly will be, I wish him the best of luck. He may never be more than a replacement level reliever or slightly better, but those guys often stick around a while filling out bullpens. And most minor league pitchers would sign in blood for that.
  9. Sure, but that guy was special. Cowser would be lucky to have half his career.
  10. I have no problem with Cowser playing CF to give Mullins or whoever a day off, at least for now. I just think he'd be exposed playing there 140-150 games per year.
  11. That'd be pretty sweet, but he's likely adequate at best and only going to get worse as he ages.
  12. So we're going to have fewer relievers available to us during a stretch with no off days? Cool.
  13. Is Stowers really faster than Hays or are they easing him back into games after the leg injury?
  14. Cowser stings another one and has nothing to show for it. Guy always seems to hit the ball hard right at someone.
  15. DJ Stewart was supposed to be adequate defensively. He wasn't even that. Only questions I remember about Machado's defense were his ability to stick at SS, which he couldn't. I don't think anyone thought he'd be questionable at 3B Wieters was a defensive stud. His game calling, not so much. Joseph was a poor defender when we first got him. We actually developed him into a great defensive catcher. Westburg doesn't have the range you want at SS, but I don't think anyone was saying he couldn't play 2B or 3B at least decently.
  16. O'Hearn and Hicks, yeah, but we traded Darell Hernaiz for Irvin. And it's not like Hernaiz was a bad prospect at the time, nor Irvin a bad pitcher.
  17. Given that he has historically tailed off in the second half and on the off chance he is done as a regular, I went with .650-.699
  18. I think a modified version of QS is about as good as we're going to get. 6 IP is becoming vanishingly rare.
  19. Yeah, it's possible they could prefer the safe asset and the Orioles, being strongly in contention, prefer to take the risk.
  20. In spleen's defense, people could just stop talking about it. Probably not going to happen though.
  21. I wish we had an elegant counting statistic to evaluate pitcher effectiveness that was better than wins. I don't really care about pitching wins--I mean, it's better to get them than not to--but I don't look at it at all to evaluate how good a pitcher is. Everyone knows what the problems with that statistic are. At a minimum, we need a better "rule of thumb" for the HoF than 300 pitching wins, or we're going to have a hard time inducting starting pitchers.
  22. Yes, Mayo is almost certainly better than Urias, but do you really want him up here getting an Urias amount of plate appearances? As to not wanting to lose an "asset" in Urias, the Orioles have likely been shopping him for a while. He's not the kind of guy teams want to trade for, and if they do trade for him they don't offer much. If we DFA'd him and someone claimed him, I'm not going to lose sleep that we missed out on a Latin lottery ticket type player by not trading him.
