People seems to forget just how good Eddie Murray was.

This might be a dirty little secret, but Eddie was better than Cal.

He was a better hitter, and much more clutch (not that Cal was unclutch, but Eddie was exceptional in that regard).     But you can't ignore that Cal was an outstanding defensive SS.   Cal was the better overall player when you factor that in.

Eddie wasn't exactly Trumbo in the field. In his prime, he was a very good 1st basemen.

His defensive prime didn't last real long.

A charitable person will say he didn't want to get injured trying to make plays that had a low likelihood of success.

A less charitable soul will say he didn't like to get his uniform dirty.

Winning the GG 3 times isn't too shabby.

I never saw Eddie play, but saying he won the GG 3 times doesn't really mean anything.  Derek Jeter won 5 and he's arguably the worst defensive SS of all time.  Didn't Rafael Palmeiro win the GG in a year where he DH'd almost every game?

I actually did see him play. Eddie was a very good 1st baseman.

And Jeter was nowhere near the worst SS of all time. Where did that come from?

Would depend on how you judged it.

He played twenty years at shortstop and was some flavor of below average for much of it.  He is probably the leader in all the negative cumulative defensive stats at short.

I never said he wasn't.  I'm just saying that GGs don't prove he was good.

That’s it. Two. The truth is that 4.3 dWAR is terrible for a shortstop. The reason the number is positive is that it includes the positional adjustment. So, for a shortstop to get a negative dWAR, he needs to be terrible on a legendary level (sorry, Mr. Jeter). Of the 67 shortstops, the average dWAR was actually 17.7.
