Has this been a successful season or not? Harder than it sounds

You've enjoyed subpar baseball for more than half the season?

I enjoy watching baseball. We were in the race a decent bit of the time. We fizzled a bit early for my taste, but I'm enjoying the fact that the team is fighting down the stretch even against long odds. I can enjoy a failed season if the effort is there and there are individual successes to enjoy.

It was not a successful season unless you are comparing it to the 98-2010

DD failed to replace Cruz and Markakis and the Orioles lost a lot of tight games. The starting pitching underperformed as well and was certainly a factor. The failure to not trade Norris/Gonzalez high to clear a spot for KG was a big mistake as he struggled from the bouncing around. The Os should have wont the division. Also the trade deadline was screwed as well. The Orioles were going to come up short and we could've traded our assets that we are going to lose for better closer players than comp picks will yield. Traded a decent young player for Parra was a mistake because the Os needed way more.

Underperformed, failed to make the right decision to sell.

A season is a failure in pretty much every way if you don't make the playoffs. Losing in the playoffs is more about luck, so I won't go on to say that winning the title is the sole indicator of a successful season. The jury is still out for me on whether we failed. The season isn't over.

However, regardless of what happens, I'm disappointed by a lot of the personnel moves this season; in the last offseason, during this season, and in anticipation of this upcoming offseason.

I agree with VaTech1994. The season was a success in some ways and a failure in other ways. One big positive was my man Ubaldo showing Orioles fans that, yes, he can pitch successfully. He had a horrible 2014 season, as he expressed it in an article, "a personal hell." He succeeded, with a lot of coaching help, to pull it together for much of the 2015 season. He wasn't perfect, and in the last part of the season, he showed some of his frustrating inconsistencies. He's still a work in progress, and I will make the bold prediction that (if DD doesn't trade him), he'll do fine in 2016.

Enough from the Grand Poobah. Wei-Yin Chen had a fine season, though he didn't always get the run support that he needed. The only frustration is knowing that I need to enjoy his O's career while I can. Alas, I suspect that he'll be headed elsewhere in the off-season.

The rest of the starting pitching struggled. Bud Norris struggled so badly that he ended up being demoted to the pen and then released. Now he's pitching for the Padres, mostly in low-leverage relief situations. Chris Tillman had a subpar season, hopefully he can get it together for the 2016 season. Kevin Gausman kept getting bounced around, which affected his performances. With a consistent spot in the rotation next year, he should improve.

As for the offense, they were streaky. In August, they imploded, with many games where they failed to score more than 3 runs. They turned it up in September. I love Adam Jones, he never, ever gives up. As for Chris Davis, he had a nice bounce-back season in 2015. I don't know if DD/Angelos will be able or willing to fork out the bucks that will be needed to bring him back. At least we will have more of Manny Machado and Adam Jones.

As for the FO, I am very disappointed in DD and after the non-action in the 2015 season, I don't trust his baseball judgment any longer. I wonder if I might be able to say: the O's had some success in spite of the FO. I am still a huge fan of Buck. He did what he could in some dire circumstances.

In some, it was a failure in that it's likely that the Orioles won't make the post season. That is very disappointing. But there were some highlights that I'll always treasure. Let's here it for 2016.

Wow really ....the pitching stunk most of the year. Ulbaldo was good early but pretty bad most of the season since.

The additions made to replace Markakis and Crus were bust.

Way too much dead money spent on released players.

I'm glad we have managed to hang around the WC until the end. But we were expected to compete for the division.

How could anyone consider this year a success? Not even close

This X 1,000.

If we had this season in 2012, it would've been a minor success. In 2015, after last season's AL East dominance, this has been a huge, ugly disappointment of a season.

Just go down the roster and ask who has performed above expectations? Chris Davis, Manny Machado, and a couple of relief pitchers. That's it.

FAILURE. On all levels (hitting, pitching, coaching, roster-building, farm-handling).

I really struggle to understand how some feel the season has been successful. We really were not competitive for a good portion of the second half of the season. Our pitching never got on track really and our GM made numerous moves that had poor results - ECabrera, TSnider, DYoung, De Aza, etc. We are going to miss the playoffs by a decent margin with several teams ahead of us and we've been a net buyer of MLB players and a net seller of prospects and high draft picks.

Most everything our GM did in 2012 turned to gold and most everything this year turned to waste.

We do have a lot of $ coming off the books, but I have little confidence that we are a preferred FA destination for elite players. The payroll could be higher due to changes in the CBA that provide for the Os to receive approx. $16M more $ per year starting in 2016. We may have a large number of top picks in next year's draft and hopefully we can draft well and improve the standing of our farm system.

The last two games crystallize why this season has been a failure. Every time it looked as though this team was finally turning a corner, they would go into a slump.

Remember how great they looked when they swept the doubleheader against Cleveland in early July? Then they went 3-10 into the All-Star break.

Remember how excited we were after the Oakland series and Urrutia's walk-off homer against the Mets? Then came the Twins series.

I can understand getting baffled by Rich Hill, but how do you come up empty against Craig Breslow and a bunch of other no-name relievers in a game that you have to win?

    • I don’t like the wall. I think it’s affecting our hitters. I’ve mentioned before that I think it has totally warped Mountcastle into something he was never really meant to be. The guy came up as a pull-heavy HR hitter, and in his first season-plus (725 PAs), he puts up 38 HRs and a 116 wRC+. Since then, the wRC+ is down to 110, and his approach has totally changed, with his pull numbers plummeting (down from 39% in 2021 to less than 28% this year). He still hits the ball hard, but constantly underachieves his batted ball data — probably because he’s trying to avoid the pull field and hitting balls to the deepest parts of pretty much every other park. Will the same thing happen to Mayo? Maybe he has more pure power, but it’s always going to be a challenge for a RH slugger to survive with that wall. So much harder to do damage.   Beyond that, I think it’s also creating a serious risk of changing our LH hitters’ approaches too. These guys (Henderson, Holliday, Cowser, 2/3 of Adley) have come up with a reputation for being able to drive the ball to all fields. But how long does that continue when they just can’t hit it out to the opposite field? Our LH hitters had a combined 44 wRC+ at OPACY, and only one HR. They had the 3rd most balls hit to LF at home by LHHs, but the lowest wRC+ of any team on those balls (for the second straight year). The Royals, ironically enough, were the only team that was lower than a 70 wRC+ — that’s how much worse our lefties fared going oppo (at OPACY) than everyone else’s. By player: Gunnar Henderson: 112 wRC+ / .160 ISO (51 PAs) Adley Rutschman: 10 wRC+ / .026 ISO (38 PAs) Anthony Santander: 14 wRC+ / .095 ISO (43 PAs) Colton Cowser: 58 wRC+ / .057 ISO (36 PAs) Ryan O’Hearn: 47 wRC+ / .091 ISO (55 PAs) Cedric Mullins: 23 wRC+ / .100 ISO (41 PAs) Jackson Holliday: -72 wRC+ / .000 ISO (16 PAs)   On the road, they had a combined 126 wRC+ (with 9 HRs) going to left field, so it’s not like they’re bad at it. It’s just Death Valley out there in LF for them at OPACY.  How long will it be until these LH guys just start going full pull-happy? Essentially, the opposite of what’s happened with Mountcastle. When (a) your team’s philosophy is to focus on doing damage and (b) you can’t DO damage to the opposite field — the rational endpoint is just to try to pull everything. I don’t think that’s a good outcome. I think it makes them much worse hitters in the other 81 games, and I think it’s a terrible waste of a bunch of really talented hitters with all-field abilities.
    • Which core players beside Adley Rutschman struggled?
    • The entire commentary on Hyde and the team seems odd but have to admit there does seem to be something off.   Team seemed adrift for most of the 2nd half.  A very talented team went off the rails midway through the season mostly due to core players struggling and rookies not performing or filling in adequately for a few injured starters.    None of the position player trade line acquisitions performed that well.     Hyde seemed in over his head or at a loss on how to correct things, but he must have convinced Elias that he has a plan to fix things.  Curious to see what happens with the coaching staff.
    • And or give up picks for QO pitchers
    • They've averaged 92 wins a year the last 3 years in the most difficult environment in the sport with basically the greatest disadvantages in the sport. Something tells me they know a hell of a lot more about this than you do.
    • Not when they aren't worthy. At minimum the hitting coaches should be el gonezo
    • That is the sign of a stable and successful organization.  Firing people.  Who could argue that?
