Nicely to see Francisco Pena get off to a good start

Kind of. Perez played in 35 games. Pena in 24. Not exactly a backup. He had some good power numbers 27 homers in two seasons worth of AAA bats, coming into this year.

Perez got more at bats because Pena wasn't hitting and did a great job. Ron Johndon refused to announce who was the starter but it was clear Pena wasn't playing because of his plate struggles.

Pena CS% and .40-man status is what got him here.

I def like the way he handles a game.

Pena did start to hit, and was hitting very well the week before he was called up.

That's true, his bat was starting to come around (good timing), but really his CS% was the reason he was chosen over Perez (ignoring the 40-man factor).

Maybe it depends on what DD believes he wants to do with Wieters after this season?
That's a good question. Wieters is good, he's a switch hitter, and is doing well behind the plate. But after this year, he will be quite expensive to keep on a long-term basis. Does the front office spend the money on keeping him? Or do they save money by going with Joseph/Pena? After all, the FO has to be concerned on keeping Machado on an exension. Talk about expensive.....
