You read the fangraphs piece on J.D. Martinez?

You know that ground ball v fly ball is like lefty v righty correct?

Maybe the O's having a fly ball pitching rotation isn't such a bad thing.

Interesting piece, but I want to address your last sentence here. After reading that piece, why would having a fly ball rotation be better than a ground ball rotation? If players OPS better with balls in the air (which by the way should be of no surprise), why would it be better to have pitchers who pitch to that strength?

IMHO, a ground ball pitcher who can miss bats and change speeds and eye levels is the best combination.

From what I have read, and this was a few years ago so I don't have it handy, fly ball pitchers have the advantage when facing fly ball hitters.  Same with ground ball pitchers and ground ball hitters.  The hitters have the advantage when they are facing the opposing style.

If I had to hazard a guess as to why they are more effective I would suggest that it is harder to get a proper launch angle using an uppercut swing on pitches up in the zone and that they end up with more vertical distance instead of horizontal distance (pop ups and cans of corn).

I'm trying to be cautiously optimistic about our pitching based on this spring.  It looks like several pitchers have taken a step forward like Wright and Gausman and others have been pleasant surprises like Miley, Aquino and Ynoa.

Time will tell as we get closer to 3/31.

I think there has been some discussion about using the hitter's approach to get them out as a derivative of the leg kick, uppercut swing path as well. Palmer has talked some about that.

    • Funny thing is, if the O's win, I'm generally so psyched on my way out that I don't even notice all of these annoyances. I'm just happy that the team won. That was my experience a lot this year when the team was doing well. Unfortunately about half of my 13 game season ticket plan was in August and September, plus I got to watch one of the pathetic WC games. You can smooth over a fair bit of fan annoyance with winning, but at the end of the day, someone has to care about the little things and actually invest money to make them better. There's no longer any question about whether the O's will be here to stay. The government and the team are aligned: OPACY and the Orioles are here, and we're going to make the best of what we have, and make it a centerpiece of Baltimore. That's great. But now they have to put their money where their mouths are. Show fans from all walks of life that we are able to reimagine OPACY and the surrounding area in the image of an efficient, clean, 21st century facility, starting with things as basic as infrastructure and plumbing, and ranging as far as parking, public trans, and food at the park. Honestly? I sort-of understood why they weren't investing in anything in the years when (1) the team was bad, and (2) ownership wasn't invested in the team, and (3) the renewal of the lease with the Maryland Stadium Authority was in doubt. The vast majority of points (1), (2) and (3) above are now non-issues, or have been majorly mitigated in the past 2 years. So it's time to make things right. Otherwise why bother with the long-term commitment at all, if you're just going to let the project languish?

    • I still think Soto (Juan, not any of the others) checks off all the boxes here.  Insanely productive, plays hard, can rub opponents the wrong way on the field but is generally liked off of it.

    • Things looking bleak for KC. They left 11 runners on base, got a taste of their own medicine, I guess.
