I Know The Draft is In A Few Hours...

Recommended Posts

But I'd like to know everyone's opinion of if we take Matusz with the 4th pick, are taking the best player on the board which is what Jordan and McPhail said they were going to do.

From everything I've read it looks like Hosmer, Alvarez, Beckham and Posey could possibly be ranked higher. I suppose it just depends on what website you're looking at.

I know it's been said plenty of times but if I were picking a pitcher with the 4th overall pick, I would expect it to be on someone with the ceiling of a frontline starter...

I'd prefer a hitter, but anybody saying Matusz is a reach or a stupid pick is incredibly off base, IMO.

With the exception of a few guys here who have done an inordinate amount of research into this draft (Greg, Stotle, markpolis, apologies to any of the major contributors I'm forgetting) I don't see how any of our opinions should even be considered compared to what Joe Jordan thinks and decides to do. Almost none of us have seen any of these guys play, or know anything other than what other people tell us. Stats from HS and even college are close to worthless. Scouting is what sticks in the draft, and considering Jordan's track record, I'll be happy with whoever he picks.

With all the offensive talent in this draft, and our lack of hitting prospects, I want them to pick a hitter. And if they do pick a pitcher, he better be a future ace.
Bigbird asked this question before, but are we better off with one of the bats at #4 and a pitcher at #50 or Matusz at #4 and one of the remaining bats at #50. Being such a deep draft for bats, especially 1B, means there will likely still be premium offensive talent available in later rounds, not neccesarily the case for pitching.

I'll be a bit bummed out if we pass on Smoak, but I'd rather have Matusz than someone like G. Beckham or Posey or Alonso.

Someone else posted how happy they'd be to have Arietta, Tillman, Matusz, Hernandez and a couple of our other arms all in this organization at the same time. I cannot disagree.

It could also be argued that drafting Matusz might make a trade of Cabrera more likely.

I'm as interested if not more interested to see how we do after the first round. We really need another good draft today.
I agree.

I'm excited to see what gems Jordan unlocks, and I'm sure the triumverant here (Greg, Stotle, Markpolis) will be overwhelming us with information on each and every pick so we can read up on these guys.

We've easily had just as much success later in the draft as we've had in the first round the past couple years.

I know regardless of who we take in the first round or any round after that I'm not going to second guess it. I think Jordan has proven that he knows what he's doing.

Here's to a good draft day today.

That is something that I have not really thought of, but makes alot of sense.

Yeah, it's pure speculation, but I think McPhail could make a great case of trading just about every productive player on the O's to really stack the organization with young talent and solidify the franchise starting in 2010. If the value's there, I think he'd have to do it.

I can see where you'd be coming from with that line of thinking, but I doubt drafting a pitcher in the first round is going to make them more likely to deal Cabrera. We've got an abundance of pitching talent already in the minors. If they draft Matsuz it's because he's the best player on their board.
