Final roster moves of the 2017 season

With 16 pitchers on the roster I don't think the O's make too many more moves this season.

Hardy is coming off the DL and someone has to go from the 40 man roster.   Faulkner and Aquino are the most logical candidates.    I think it will be Aquino for two reasons.  He is out of option nest year and has been inconsistent all year.  Faulkner probably stays because he has an option for next year and he is left-handed.   JMG.

The last pitcher to the added is probably Mike Wright.  That will happen after the Yankee series and before the Indians game on Friday.

Crichton is another candidate for recall but with 17 pitchers on the roster he probably goes to Sarasota for call  up if someone gets hurt.

I don't see anyone from AA that gets recalled.   The roster is pretty full right now.

Injuries can always create opening but they can't be predicted.

It doesn't appear that Buck will go away from his veteran starters as long as the O's are contending.   They probably get pulled early if they are in trouble but they keep starting is my guess.  Castro and Wright could get starts if he O's are eliminated.

A couple of days ago I dismissed your suggestion that the O's would carry 19 pitchers this September.   After a 12 and 13 inning game in the first four days of September, and a series of truncated starts, it no longer seems so far fetched.    I certainly agree Wright will be called up.   I don't see Crichton getting a call, but Aquino could.

If we are still in it after Bowie's playoff run ends, and Gentry is still unable to help the team, I would hope they'd consider adding Hays for speed and defense.

Good point that they probably add Gentry in about 10 days.   However, it makes little sense to put Hays on the major league roster this season unless there are injuries.

The O's are going to have a very full major league roster this off season.   Adding Hays just means someone else needs to be DFA'd or exposed to the Rule 5 draft.

It would make even less sense to miss the playoffs because we couldn't pinch-hit for Joey until the 9th inning. If Gentry can't contribute he can be put on the 60-day DL or released. Either way opens a roster spot.

Hellickson was bad but the ump was worse. That call to Judge really changed the inning. I mean personally when the ump blew that call, I said, "Come on Jeremy. Throw it over. Let him hit a homer. It's better to be down 2-1 and starting over than to end up down 4-1."

The nibbling by our pitchers drives me nuts. Get blasted. Don't walk yourself to death.

This is controversial but I want Ubaldo in the starting rotation. His upside is there. The downside isn't any worse than Tillman or Hellickson.

And to beat 2 other teams we are going to have to get some breaks.

I heard at the begining of the TV broadcast that Buck plans to use a 5 man rotation and that Ubaldo will go to the pen.

Good job Yacobonis.

As bad as this game is going, if it wasn't for Adam's error , we'd only be down 3-2. If it wasn't for the ump, it might be tied.

Is there any chance the MASN box isn't set up right tonight? I mean the 2-2 pitch to Judge looked low to me but according to the box, it was a strike. Same thing on MLB app. Anyone watching on YES? Or do you think the standard box doesn't reflect how tall Judge is?

Who goes off 40 for Hardy?   Not that Hardy is needed at this point.

Rodriguez (audition has not gone well).

Ramirez (a change-up pitcher like Aquino)

 Faulkner

Gentry to 60-day DL ( if all he can do is PR).

Ramirez has a fastball though.  Rodriguez could make it through waivers I think.

I agree that Rodriguez is not showing well in the few opportunities he has had.   He might pass through waivers because of his age and lack of experience or success in the majors.

I think Buck wants Gentry as a PR.

Ramirez is part of the 2018 Tides rotation that may help the 2018 O's rotation at some point.

Faulkner is a lefty which gives him a edge to stay.  He has an option.  He will play next season at 25 years old. Those to elements might give him the edge to stay over Rodriguez.

Rodriguez has been a workhorse out the pen in AAA the last two years throwinf a combined 150 IP with a sub 2.5 ERA.

I think that has more value than a Faulkner, who is like our 5th LH option for the pen. Plus Faulkner only three 40 IP this season. Probably just a LOOGY up here.

    • I honestly think there is very little difference in most the teams that made the playoffs.  The most wins was 98 wins and there was 12 teams with 86 wins or more.  It also seems that many of the teams are on the same page with scouting and analytics now hitting wise.  Years back you had moneyball which the A’s used before anyone else.  Then the Astros and few teams started with analytics and seemed to be ahead of the rest of the league but they have caught up now imo.  Now the move seems to be on launch angle and hitting homers by getting the ball in the air but that seems to be across the league.  Obviously some teams have more money and more talented players but the strategy seems about the same.  The main differences I see is in pitching in the playoffs which is bullpen games and using openers rather then a starter to go 7 innings and carry your team to win now a slight sign of trouble they are taking them out.  With all these short inning guys and pitching them in certain pockets we are seeing very little offense and the hitting with runners in scoring position has been awful.  It all comes down to RISP at bats and getting 1 or 2 big base hits in those situations.  We just haven’t been able to get those hits so far in short series.
    • And we've seen similar with Kjerstad. Kjerstad might be the best pure hitting prospect in the Orioles system of recent years besides Gunnar. I want to see him playing everyday next year is possible none of this sitting him versus LHP more often than not. These prospects need to get their reps and stop treating them like John Lowenstein and Benny Ayala.
    • I don’t see Elias trading off prospects anymore at least top guys.  We have moved a few guys in last year and I expect they try to build that back up.  They should have money to use if they want to add talent.
    • Blah, well Rob Manfred has to be happy along with Fox network. A Yankees-Mets World Series match up is still on the table and the Dodgers as well if they win tomorrow. I knew the Royals would get jettisoned by the Yankees without too much of a fight.
    • For Mountcastle …Maybe Chase Petty and Tristan Smith?
    • I’m guessing they ask for Mayo or Basallo of Kjerstad. For me …I’d give them Kjerstad since he’s defensively challenged IMO. Maybe Kjerstad, McDermott, Beavers, and O’Ferrall?
    • 192 wins in two seasons is a pretty strong argument to stay the course.  That said, I wonder if the young players wouldn't be better off long-term if the scientific matchups took a back seat to the raw talent a little more than we've seen.  Overthinking something can be a thing you know.
