With a payroll of 57m last year, apparently there is room there. :)

According to BB-ref, they have $68 mm committed now.     But they’ve previously run payrolls as high as $109 mm.    They’ve been saving their money the last three years and probably have a fair amount available to spend in the next few years if they perceive that a competitive window has opened (which seems reasonable coming off an 86-wIn season).

It's not about the money it's about the years. The Orioles won't give long term contracts to starting pitchers so they'll never be in the market to sign high profile pitching free agents like Darvish. I could live with this strategy if they were more active on the trade front, but they're not. They just sit on their hands for 90% of the off season and pray that players like Nelson Cruz will fall into their laps.

The Brewers also have a strong amount of talent in the minors to come up the next few years to contribute at the league minimum.  Braun can be replaced by Lewis Brinson or Broxton.  The Brewers also have Hiura around the top 50 plus Luis Ortiz is underrated and they have much more.

The Os might be more inclined to pay into a Darvish contract if Davis were coming off the books in the next two years, but that is not the case.

Orioles also gave the Brewers a boost by trading them Zach Davies.

I just want the Orioles to choose a direction, go all in for one last run in 2018 or start rebuilding.  Lack of organizational philosophy is going to set this franchise back a decade.

Jimenez is coming off the books.

We were in it pretty late too. We fell off late, but we were in the thick of the WC until late September.

No, we really weren't. We fell to 71-72 on September 10th and never reached .500 again. In fact, we only won four more games the rest of the season.

Not saying that Yu Darvish will get us over the hump, but he’d definitely make our starting rotation better. And it’s very frustrating seeing a small market team like Milwaukee at least try to obtain a top of the rotation starter and the O’s just sit there and do absolutely nothing.

The Brewers aren't paying huge money to a bunch of underperforming players.  The only big contract they have is Braun and he might provide equal production for his pay.  The Brewers are also a team on the rise, and have a lot of pre-arbitration players and prospects who will be cheap for a while.  Adding Darvish at even $25 mill/yr won't strain their payroll.

Yes they really was, 1 game down and 19 to play, gave them room, hindsight, they didnt take advantage of that.

His WAR was 1.2 last season, so he wasnt providing production for his pay.
