Hey guys, somebody explain to me why Mountcastle is ranked so high when his defense is so bad? Is it actually not that bad? Is his bat just really that good? Or so we still think that multiple DH-types is a good thing?

If you read through Mountcastle's profile it should give you your answers. In synopsis, he's just not a 3B/SS but he has some athleticism and the thought is he could end up in LF or 1B before DH would be his only option.

Tony - I know comps can be dangerous, but it seems really difficult to get our heads around what major-league-contributor Ryan Mountcastle could look like. I've been thinking (and may be totally wrong here)...

Ceiling: Matt Holiday (plays left field and rakes)

Floor:  Right-handed Logan Morrison (enticing power but never puts it together)

Most Likely: Mark Trumbo (big power, low OBP, no real positional value)

Trumbo is not a bad comp, but I think Mountcastle will hit for higher average and have less power.   And I suspect he’ll be a better defender, though the one thing Trumbo has is an above average arm.

Edwin Encarnación is the best comp I can come up with it at this stage. Might be more towards the ceiling comp, but I could see Mountcastle becoming that kind of hitter.

Everything I read says his defense is unplayable almost everywhere. But regardless, it reflects the bad farm system if such a limited defender is ranked so high.

That’s not true, link a report saying he’s unplayable almost everywhere.

I read someone, I don't recall who, that thought he would end up passable at third, below average but passable.

Who said LF or DH but not first?

Adam McInturff of 2080 I believe.

Fans make the positionless comments about Mountcastle, not scouts or prospect analysts. He’s not Willie Calhoun or Delmon Young.
