TT: Mullins: Starter or Future 4th Outfielder?

A 4th OF that has speed and can play CF, is a lot more valuable than some lumbering COF type. Mullins just happens to be the first position “prospect” up after we officially entered rebuild mode. I won’t be disappointed if he’s a platoon 4th OF.  Plus Hays, Diaz, and Mckenna are all RH.

I was hoping Mullins could play daily and use Yaz as the 4th OF.

Our old buddy Felix is only 33, still playing Dominincan winter ball.  Last year played for Leon in the Mexican League and had a 1.000 OPS in their spring season.  In '14 he was in Korea where he hit .326 for a terrible Hanwah team.

I thought the book on him was, he could get to the ball but didn't have a great arm. I assume you're referring to additional issues besides the arm, like his reads. If he's a defensive liability, then to me he's a fourth outfielder -- hopefully.

Seems to me we could have great defense very early on in this process, and I hope we go that route.

If he's a defensive liability he's a liability.

This year or in the future?  Because 2020 on I would think Mullins, Hays, Diaz and McKenna should be thought of as the top-4.  If you're talking this year exclusively, I definitely think Mullins plays every day, or effectively every day.

Why would this depress me?   Felix   Pie was a top 30 prospect in MLB at one time.    Mullins is a 13th round pick who already defied the odds by reaching the majors.   Anything we get from the guy is like found money.    And he seems to have a lot better head on his shoulders than Pie.

Because Pie didn't have a very long career and never became a full time starter in the major leagues. This has nothing to do whether or not Mullins was a good pick. He certainly was and he very well may out perform Pie at the major league level, but his comps are pretty close.

Yeah, I don’t disagree with you there.     Of course, BB-ref is full of guys who were top prospects but flopped, as well as other guys who were much more lightly regarded as prospects but were able to carve out respectable major league careers.    I’m not really counting on Mullins to be an impact major leaguer (by which I mean, a guy who can last a number of years at 300+ PA per season), but at least he’s put himself in position to take a shot at it.    He’s beaten the odds so far, so maybe he’ll beat them again.   If he’s able to have a 5-10 WAR career that would be a huge success in my book.    If not, well hopefully we’ll get production from Diaz, Hays, McKenna and Stewart.

Obviously he has to show he's a better defender in the majors than he did last year.

But if he does, he can still have a pretty decent career despite his deficiencies vs LHP.   Matt Joyce is still getting MLB jobs at 34 despite a .573 career OPS vs LH.

Personally I think he will settle in as a solid 4th outfielder who will be able to play CF and LF. If he gets to that 5-10 WAR level that should certainly be considered a success. I think he's a better defender then he showed in his debut, but I never thought he was an elite defender. I think he could be an above average left fielder in Camden Yards.

As a 13th rounder, wouldn’t making the show and having any level positive WAR be a success? Guess how one defines “success.”
