Pitchers Grayson Rodriguez and Drew Rom will remain teenagers all season, while shortstop Adam Hall celebrates his 20th birthday on May 20. EAST TEXAS TWISTER: Grayson Rodriguez is the top-ranked right-handed pitching prospect in the O’s system (No. 5 overall). As a high schooler, the Nacogdoches natve trained at a facility in nearby Tyler frequented by Mets ace Noah Syn dergaard and White Sox blue-chipper Michael Kopech. The Venezuelan backstop caught 36 of 94 runners stealing, good for a 38.3 percent success rate, which as a career stat would trail just Yadier Molina (40.8) among actve major leaguers. “HEY NOW...”: Five Shorebirds were All-Stars last season with their respectve teams. Mat Ham monds, Cody Roberts, Robbie Thorburn repre sented Aberdeen in the New York-Penn League, while Seamus Curran was an SAL All-Star with Delmarva and Jean Carlos Encarnacion earned Postseason All-Star honors in the Sally League. The team in Salisbury played as the Indians, Senators, and Cardinals in its existence. The ESBL served as a minor league home for fu ture Hall-of-Famers like Home Run Baker, Mickey Cochrane, and Jimmie Foxx. MAP QUEST: The informal lineage of the Shore birds franchise dates back to the founding of the modern SAL in 1980. Back then they played as the Anderson (SC) Braves. Afer the 1984 season the team moved to Sumter (SC), where they played as the Braves/Flyers through 1991 before becoming the Albany (GA) Polecats. In 1995, Maryland Baseball L.P. purchased the Polecats franchise, returning pro baseball to Salisbury for the frst tme since 1952. WHAT’S IN A NAME?: Delmarva has played as the Shorebirds since its inaugural 1996 season. The nickname “Shorebirds” emerged from 10 fnalists and over 1,700 different nicknames sub mited by local fans. Other top entrants included Mallards, Retrievers, Ospreys, and Stngrays. ‘BIRD BARONS: The Perdue family’s fngerprints can be seen all over the Shorebirds franchise. Former Perdue Farms president/CEO Frank Perdue was instrumental in bringing baseball back to Delmarva in the 1990s, including dona ton of the land for its new stadium. The ballpark is named for Frank’s father, Perdue Farms founder Arthur W. Perdue. BIRDLAND BASTION: Since its second year in 1997, Delmarva has been the Low-A afliate of the Baltmore Orioles. Among SAL teams, only the Asheville Tourists have a longer associaton with their current parent franchise (COL, since 1994). Despite being based just 112 miles away from Camden Yards, only Norfolk (231 mi) is farther from Charm City within the O’s umbrella. WEST COAST BRETHREN: The Shorebirds have been owned by 7th Inning Stretch, LLC since No vember 2006. The Stockton, CA-based company owns two other minor league baseball teams: the Everet Aquasox (SEA, Northwest League) and the Stockton Ports (OAK, California League). BURNING RUBBER: As part of the league’s “northern bloc,” the Shorebirds face a tougher travel schedule than most SAL teams. Four of Delmarva’s divisional opponents are more than six hours away by bus; its farthest foe this season, Lexington, will require a nine-and-a-half hour drive. VOLAR JUNTOS: The Shorebirds will play three home games (seven total) as the “Gallos de Delmarva” this year, as part of the MiLB Copa de la Diversión (Fun Cup). The gallo - Spanish for rooster - symbolizes strength and determina ton as a representatve of the dynamic regional poultry industry.
