PARTY LIKE IT’S 1999: The Shorebirds opening
day roster features three 19-year-olds. Pitchers
Grayson Rodriguez and Drew Rom will remain
teenagers all season, while shortstop Adam Hall
celebrates his 20th birthday on May 20.

EAST TEXAS TWISTER: Grayson Rodriguez is the
top-ranked right-handed pitching prospect in the
O’s system (No. 5 overall). As a high schooler,
the Nacogdoches natve trained at a facility in
nearby Tyler frequented by Mets ace Noah Syn
dergaard and White Sox blue-chipper Michael
Kopech.

(PITCHERS’) 19TH NERVOUS BREAKDOWN:
Adam Hall authored a blistering 19-game hit
tng streak last season with the IronBirds. The
Bermudian-born shortstop bated .456 with
seven extra-base hits, 12 RBIs, 19 runs, and 15
stolen bases from August 4 through 28.

FOES TURNED FRIENDS: Shortstop Cadyn
Grenier and pitcher Blaine Knight appeared in
opposite dugouts during the 2018 College World
Series fnal. Knight pitched Arkansas to a win in
Game 1, but Grenier and Oregon State had the
last laugh by winning the series and ttle.

READY FOR LIFTOFF: J.C. Encarnacion brings
arguably the most pop to the Shorebirds lineup.
Last season he obliterated a 109 mph, 435-foot
three-run homer to help beat Charleston on
August 17.

SOUTHPAW SIZZLER: Nick Vespi, now a startng
pitcher, anchored the Shorebird bullpen in 2018
with a team-high nine saves. The lefy led team
relievers with a 2.09 ERA, struck out 68 and
walked just 23 over 64.2 innings.

NO MÁS: Daniel Fajardo kept baserunners on
their toes as the Shorebirds’ primary catcher
in 2017. The Venezuelan backstop caught 36
of 94 runners stealing, good for a 38.3 percent
success rate, which as a career stat would trail
just Yadier Molina (40.8) among actve major
leaguers.

“HEY NOW...”: Five Shorebirds were All-Stars last
season with their respectve teams. Mat Ham
monds, Cody Roberts, Robbie Thorburn repre
sented Aberdeen in the New York-Penn League,
while Seamus Curran was an SAL All-Star with
Delmarva and Jean Carlos Encarnacion earned
Postseason All-Star honors in the Sally League.

SEA TO SHINING SEA: The Shorebirds’ American
players come from 13 different states. Florida
and Texas are most represented with three play
ers each, while Arkansas, California, and North
Carolina each send two players to Delmarva.

INTERNATIONAL HOUSE OF BASEBALL: Delmar
va boasts seven players who hail from fve differ
ent foreign countries. Three Shorebirds hail from
the Dominican Republic (Encarnacion, Guance,
Peralta), while Canada (Hall), Colombia (Peluffo),
Italy (Miller), and Venezuela (Fajardo) also fnd
representaton at Perdue Stadium.
THE SHORE TO THE SHOW: Since
the team’s incepton, 109 former
Shorebirds have made it to the
major leagues. Orlando Cabrera
was the frst, debutng for the
Montréal Expos on Sept. 3, 1997.

PENINSULA BALL: Professional baseball on the
Delmarva Peninsula can trace its roots back
to the Class-D Eastern Shore Baseball League,
which operated from 1922-49 over three sepa
rate stnts. The team in Salisbury played as the
Indians, Senators, and Cardinals in its existence.
The ESBL served as a minor league home for fu
ture Hall-of-Famers like Home Run Baker, Mickey
Cochrane, and Jimmie Foxx.

MAP QUEST: The informal lineage of the Shore
birds franchise dates back to the founding of the
modern SAL in 1980. Back then they played as
the Anderson (SC) Braves. Afer the 1984 season
the team moved to Sumter (SC), where they
played as the Braves/Flyers through 1991 before
becoming the Albany (GA) Polecats. In 1995,
Maryland Baseball L.P. purchased the Polecats
franchise, returning pro baseball to Salisbury for
the frst tme since 1952.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?: Delmarva has played as
the Shorebirds since its inaugural 1996 season.
The nickname “Shorebirds” emerged from 10
fnalists and over 1,700 different nicknames sub
mited by local fans. Other top entrants included
Mallards, Retrievers, Ospreys, and Stngrays.

‘BIRD BARONS: The Perdue family’s fngerprints
can be seen all over the Shorebirds franchise.
Former Perdue Farms president/CEO Frank
Perdue was instrumental in bringing baseball
back to Delmarva in the 1990s, including dona
ton of the land for its new stadium. The ballpark
is named for Frank’s father, Perdue Farms
founder Arthur W. Perdue.

BIRDLAND BASTION: Since its second year in
1997, Delmarva has been the Low-A afliate of
the Baltmore Orioles. Among SAL teams, only
the Asheville Tourists have a longer associaton
with their current parent franchise (COL, since
1994). Despite being based just 112 miles away
from Camden Yards, only Norfolk (231 mi) is
farther from Charm City within the O’s umbrella.

WEST COAST BRETHREN: The Shorebirds have
been owned by 7th Inning Stretch, LLC since No
vember 2006. The Stockton, CA-based company
owns two other minor league baseball teams:
the Everet Aquasox (SEA, Northwest League)
and the Stockton Ports (OAK, California League).

BURNING RUBBER: As part of the league’s
“northern bloc,” the Shorebirds face a tougher
travel schedule than most SAL teams. Four
of Delmarva’s divisional opponents are more
than six hours away by bus; its farthest foe this
season, Lexington, will require a nine-and-a-half
hour drive.

VOLAR JUNTOS: The Shorebirds will play three
home games (seven total) as the “Gallos de
Delmarva” this year, as part of the MiLB Copa
de la Diversión (Fun Cup). The gallo - Spanish for
rooster - symbolizes strength and determina
ton as a representatve of the dynamic regional
poultry industry.

Kyle Moore, 33, was named the 15th manager in Delmarva Shorebirds history on
February 8, 2019. The 2019 season is Moore’s fourth on the Shorebirds’ coaching staff; he
has held different positons each year.
“I was automatcally excited when I got the call, knowing that I had been in Delmarva parts
of four or fve seasons at least,” said Moore before the season. “I knew I was familiar with
how everything was run, so it was kind of comfortng. I’m super excited to get my frst op
portunity to manage a full-season club. I just can’t say enough about how excited I am for
this opportunity.”
Moore became manager of the Aberdeen IronBirds weeks before the 2018 season opener

in Delmarva, batng .213 with three RBIs over 16 games. He ended his playing career afer
playing 12 games in the Orioles system in 2011, including one with the Shorebirds.
Born in Montgomery, Ala. and raised in nearby Wetumpka, Moore excelled in baseball and
football at Edgewood Academy before graduatng in 2004. He then played baseball at the
