I find it interesting that Roch, a MASN employee, would give that opinion.  I would think that he would have been told the reason behind Davis' absence.

It does seem rather curious and perhaps unprofessional of him to speculate.

Well, prove to me (or yourself) that you can cook ribs on a grill and not rely on some water bath technique.

I can cook ribs on a regular gas grill with a smoke box full of hickory or apple. I can even do mesquite.  Takes a long while but it is steps from my home.

This post is going to be a little long, but it's something I wanted to get off my chest in regards to Chris Davis. He was good/great when we were competitive. From 2012-2016 was our competitive window in my opinion. During that time, Chris Davis was worth 17.9 WAR. Let's say that one WAR was worth 7 million dollars (I think it's been calculated at more than that now). So during those five years he was worth about 125 million dollars. We paid him fifty million dollars. Do you think Peter Angelos ever had the thought to say "Gee Chris, we are going to pay you 75 million more dollars, we really underpaid you man"!

So the man made the money when he could make it, just like I would have. There's not a chance I would walk away from a single dollar of my contract. No doubt, he has been terrible since 2017. Just doing some rough calculations, he has been worth negative 5.5 WAR not including this season. So he has still provided a net positive of 12 or so WAR over the course of his contract. Not including this season, we have paid Chris Davis about 120 million dollars for these 12 wins. So yeah, the contract didn't work out. He's earned something like 30-35 million more than he has been worth. By the time the contact is over, it will look even worse. But here's the kicker. His contact from 2017-now isn't stopping us from being competitive. If we had to pick a time to have an albatross of a contact, this is the best time. His 23 million dollar salary could be used to get us a couple of good pickups, or one close to elite player. That might win us an extra 7-8 games over the course of the season if I am being generous. Where does that get us? So we win 68 games instead of 60?

I agree with the posters that have stated that Chris Davis isn't blocking anyone right now. The best thing we can do is see if he can become a .700-.725 first baseman with good defense. Mountcastle isn't up and let's not pretend that giving someone like Nunez or Stewart more at bats is of some vital importance. I'm not happy with the contract, but he's not the biggest reason we are failing. We didn't net much from trading our stars. Britton, Manny, Bundy, and others I'm forgetting didn't get us one top level prospect (in my opinion). We traded guys like Hader and Davies among others. Our farm system is average even with high draft picks. We play in a division where we are without a shadow of a doubt the least talented team in the A.L. East.

I just wanting to put things in a different perspective. I wish Chris would learn to bunt and listen to advice and change his approach at the plate. I still wish him the best, and let's hope that he is taking days off for reasons unrelated to COVID.

Bunt? Bunt?

Something I have not read before:

From Orioles.com:

Quote

Non-high risk players who elect not to play are placed on the restricted list and do not get salary or service time. Davis’ wife, Jill, is a trained pediatric nurse. Their second daughter, Evie, was born with a serious heart condition in January 2018.

Here is some pure speculation from me.

Is it possible that Davis has opted out but the O's are holding up the announcement?  Maybe they want assurance  from MLB on when Mountcastle is eliigible to be promotion  in according with service time under the shortened season rules.  Maybe the O's want to announce  both moves at the same time.

Just me speculating.

I do an indirect heating and try to keep the temps ~200 after I get the box up and smoking. A bit of a trick but I've got it.

I have a couple Big Green Eggs that use charcoal(not brickets).  Put some mustard on and season the ribs heavily with something like dizzy pig and leave uncovered in the fridge overnight. Fire up the grill the next day, throw in some apple or cherry, get to 250 and cook for 3 hours bone side down. After that, wrap in foil with some apple cider, whiskey or apple cider vinegar and throw on for another hour. Finally, take them out of the foil and cook another hour to firm up the outside, maybe throw a couple more chunks of wood on for more smoke and brush 10 minutes before that last hour is up with your favorite sauce(I like a nice ketchup based homemade one or a Carolina mustard based but to each his own).

You are welcome.

If he’s on Covid watch why is he working out with the team? That seems contradictory.

He wasn't on Covid watch then.

He worked out on Tuesday, expressed concerns about playing and said he planned to wear a mask at first base, then on Wednesday he went off the grid. It seems like a wild coincidence for him to have caught Covid during that window...

Perhaps the team gave him 48 hours to decide whether he wanted to opt out.
