Crochet is not Cease. Guy is on an innings limit and hasn’t been a starter like this for years. No way I’m trading that kind of package for him.

Put him on an innings limit until October. Problem solved. They'll want him fresh for the postseason.

He's never been a starter at any level, college or pro until this season.

He pitched 24 innings last year after missing all of 2022. He’s never thrown more than 54 or so as a professional. He’s already over 100 innings. If you put him on an innings limit you’re most likely only letting him go, what, a couple innings each outing at most? He can’t be a starter, so he’s going to require a lot of shoehorning to find spots for him.

It’s a real problem. If you only let him throw a couple innings, he’s effectively a reliever and then wanting him to start in the postseason is a non starter. No pun intended.

You basically are asking him to be a reliever and then be used like a reliever…but he hasn’t operated like that since last season. That’s not very straightforward.

If that’s the case, then why not try trade for him this offseason instead ?

You have to make the team better this season if you want a chance to win in the WS. If you trade for rentals and give up valuable pieces, which you absolutely will have to, due to so many teams in the hunt, what do you have left to trade in the offseason?

Spot starter but he was never a college workhorse starter.

He definitely was a starter for his first 2 years before becoming a full time reliever. Either way, the point remains, this is uncharted territory for him as he’s exclusively a starter.

Personally I just can’t see him going more than 120 IP over last years 24 IP or so. Chris Sale is probably the blueprint. Went from around 70 IP to 190 the next year.

That leaves, what, around 40 IP with half the season left. That’s not much room at all. That gives you 1-2 innings a start and some skipped starts. Basically he’s a reliever the rest of the year. But he hasn’t pitched 3-4 times a week, so he’ll be restricted there, too.

Yeah that’s a good question .  It’s challenging not only trying to trade for help but at same time we have competition from other buyers (as you mentioned) . For this postseason no less.
I can picture Elias making a fair offer but I don’t think he would overpay though

Crochet seems like the worst of both worlds. He can’t help you as a starter, and he’s limited to how often he can pitch as a reliever. If this team wasn’t in contention, sure…cool pickup. But why not just get a real reliever and a starter that isn’t innings limited?

The additional years of control.
