Erbe leaves with injury (UPDATED)

Brandon had given up 2 runs on 5 hits in 2 plus innings to the worst hitting team in the Eastern League. He was not having a good game. I hope it is just a sprain but of course the key to delivery is the legs so we will see how it goes.

The hits he was giving up were all because of the fastball. He was having a little trouble locating it, and when it's straight, 90mph and not where you are trying to put it, they are going to get some hits. I wouldn't put too much stock into this, like I've said, I'll keep giving updates, but I'm not going to do a full write up on him until I've given him a chance to really get back into the swing of things and shake the rust off you know?

Something is wrong with Erbz, they should shut him down until further notice.

I'm still trying to get to the bottom of things, a couple people I have talked to say they've never seen Erbe throw too hard, so if he wasn't throwing as hard as he was hyped to be throwing then this is just normal stuff.

I did find out that in 08 when he got rid of that hitch in his delievery it cost him a couple mph on his fastball. So if he was thought to be throwing around 94, then he would be throwing around 91-92 now, which would be a little more in line with what I saw yesterday.

I'm still hoping to get a chance to ask him, but I didn't want to bother him too much last night after he just tweaked his ankle, I'm sure he was frustrated enough.

Dude he twisted his ankle.

I think he's talking about the lack of velocity, it's been the on-going discussion a couple of us have been having lately.

The ankle thing didn't look too bad, I was right behind the plate when it happened, and he could put his weight on it when they were checking him out, just had a bit of a limp. I'll check on him again tonight when I go see Hernandez.

Lack of velocity when? Yesterday? In Aberdeen? Earlier this year in Bowie? Last year in Frederick?

Let me just say, I don't trust the Bowie radar gun as far as I can throw it. I read too many game reports where that gun is all over the map.

Yesterday. I'm still trying to nail down what he has thrown in different places, I'm going to try to ask him himself, but it seems that the biggest chunk of velocity dip came when he changed his delivery last year. I don't use the Bowie gun, it is horrible, not to mention it's out for repair. That is on the real guns, 3 different ones for the record.

After some more research, and help from our wonderful writers here, it looks like even after the adjustments Erbe made last year, he was sitting 92-94. The other night he was sitting 88-90 so he's a couple mph off, but that just might be from the shoulder fatigue and just coming back.

I'll keep my eye on it and update after a few more starts.

Its tough to get rid of dead arm sometimes, I always thought the only remedy was not throwing for a while. Its kinda strange IMO that they would continue to send him out there with that much less velocity and after him having this shoulder fatigue.....I wonder if the trainers know somethign that we dont(just speculating, I cant think of a scenario that theyd know something, just trying to put pieces together)

I didn't get the impression when I saw him that anything was really wrong (and I'm good at reading people). So I'll just go see him a couple more times and we can draw conclusions later. He's probably just building up the arm strength again. He seemed like he was in a good mood yesterday, so I'd think if something was really off, he'd be showing it.

After reading what Tony wrote in the 2008 top 30 list, his drop in velo lines up right along with what he said when Erbe lost velo last year. It said that he sat between 88-92. Its strange for Erbe to be so much all over the map. Especialkly because his arm strength was back to the norm at first this year when he posted a .90 ERA in the beginning....

    • 41 freaking years and here's this guy with the name pickles telling me I should be happy with 91 wins and getting owned in the playoffs again. 😂 😂 I saw a team that looked terrible the second half and probably didn't even deserve that spot the way they were playing .
    • Lol. Here's the funny they know more then you know. Typical Oriole fan who's happy with getting punched in the mouth.
    • I don’t like the wall. I think it’s affecting our hitters. I’ve mentioned before that I think it has totally warped Mountcastle into something he was never really meant to be. The guy came up as a pull-heavy HR hitter, and in his first season-plus (725 PAs), he puts up 38 HRs and a 116 wRC+. Since then, the wRC+ is down to 110, and his approach has totally changed, with his pull numbers plummeting (down from 39% in 2021 to less than 28% this year). He still hits the ball hard, but constantly underachieves his batted ball data — probably because he’s trying to avoid the pull field and hitting balls to the deepest parts of pretty much every other park. Will the same thing happen to Mayo? Maybe he has more pure power, but it’s always going to be a challenge for a RH slugger to survive with that wall. So much harder to do damage.   Beyond that, I think it’s also creating a serious risk of changing our LH hitters’ approaches too. These guys (Henderson, Holliday, Cowser, 2/3 of Adley) have come up with a reputation for being able to drive the ball to all fields. But how long does that continue when they just can’t hit it out to the opposite field? Our LH hitters had a combined 44 wRC+ at OPACY, and only one HR. They had the 3rd most balls hit to LF at home by LHHs, but the lowest wRC+ of any team on those balls (for the second straight year). The Royals, ironically enough, were the only team that was lower than a 70 wRC+ — that’s how much worse our lefties fared going oppo (at OPACY) than everyone else’s. By player: Gunnar Henderson: 112 wRC+ / .160 ISO (51 PAs) Adley Rutschman: 10 wRC+ / .026 ISO (38 PAs) Anthony Santander: 14 wRC+ / .095 ISO (43 PAs) Colton Cowser: 58 wRC+ / .057 ISO (36 PAs) Ryan O’Hearn: 47 wRC+ / .091 ISO (55 PAs) Cedric Mullins: 23 wRC+ / .100 ISO (41 PAs) Jackson Holliday: -72 wRC+ / .000 ISO (16 PAs)   On the road, they had a combined 126 wRC+ (with 9 HRs) going to left field, so it’s not like they’re bad at it. It’s just Death Valley out there in LF for them at OPACY.  How long will it be until these LH guys just start going full pull-happy? Essentially, the opposite of what’s happened with Mountcastle. When (a) your team’s philosophy is to focus on doing damage and (b) you can’t DO damage to the opposite field — the rational endpoint is just to try to pull everything. I don’t think that’s a good outcome. I think it makes them much worse hitters in the other 81 games, and I think it’s a terrible waste of a bunch of really talented hitters with all-field abilities.
    • Which core players beside Adley Rutschman struggled?
    • The entire commentary on Hyde and the team seems odd but have to admit there does seem to be something off.   Team seemed adrift for most of the 2nd half.  A very talented team went off the rails midway through the season mostly due to core players struggling and rookies not performing or filling in adequately for a few injured starters.    None of the position player trade line acquisitions performed that well.     Hyde seemed in over his head or at a loss on how to correct things, but he must have convinced Elias that he has a plan to fix things.  Curious to see what happens with the coaching staff.
