Orioles interested in Seth Smith

Seth Smith is drawing interest from the Mariners and Orioles, among other clubs. Trading Smith would be an easier route for the team to take than moving one of Carlos Quentin or Cameron Maybin, neither of whom has much (if any) trade value. The Padres, however, gave Smith assurance that he wouldn?t be dealt this offseason when he signed a two-year, $13MM extension in early July. Then again, that assurance came before GM A.J. Preller had been hired.

I would be OK with this move. Wonder what they would want for him.

I think Smith and Delmon Young would be a nice DH platoon and both could play in the field if needed. No idea what his trade value would be though? I thought I remember last year the Orioles linked to him before the contract extension.

The idea of the Padres trading Smith has come up a lot since they got Kemp. The metrics don't like his defense so I'm not sure there. You would think he could handle right field in our place given where he's coming from.

He could play some defense but I would want him as our main DH vs RHP.

Love to have Seth Smith. I don't understand why the Padres would trade him since they must be looking to compete after trading fro Kemp. Though I also don't understand why they'd trade for Kemp and trying to make another trade for Upton so who knows what they're doing.

2015 32 San Diego Padres $6,000,000 6.119

2016 33 San Diego Padres $6,750,000

2017 34 San Diego Padres *$7,000,000 $7M Team Option, $250k Buyout

This makes sense. I've felt that DD has been strapped for dollars because of all of the arbitration cases he has this year. I've been thinking that he has been seeking a free agent outfielder for about 3-4 million per year. If he could trade Matusz for Smith he'd get his player for the right price. It would take more than just Matusz. Probably a mid level prospect as well. Maybe a catcher.

    • Starting point has changed.  Given the fact he has approx 1/7th of his season in the books at 1.139, to OPS just .780 for the season, he'd have to drop off to under .730 the rest of the way.  That sort of drop off wouldn't be acceptable to me. I'd like him to OPS .800 the rest of the way for roughly .850 for the season.  The more they use him in a platoon role, the better I think that number might be.
    • Can I ask how you timed it vs the DVR?  Did you use a stopwatch or count click with pause/FF, or something else?
    • I can’t fathom why anyone would want a Tanner Scott return. In 10 innings, he is 0-4 with a 1.78 whip. He was maddening before, and now he’s older. But I wonder if the Red Sox would part with Justin Slaten? He’s been pretty outstanding. Yeah, only 8 innings, but we hired Yohan Ramirez, and he’s been a catastrophe in 10. Yes, I know he’s a rule 5, and the Bosox are in the East. And their pitching is pretty thin, too. But they know they aren’t going anywhere in this division, and they might think getting a good return for a Free Rule 5 guy might be worthwhile.
    • This draft unfolded weirdly.  First with the *nix guys getting taken early and then how no defensive players got taken all draft, and then a bunch of teams reaching for OTs.  I'm pretty happy with how the draft unfolded because I think we got a player that I expected to be gone by the teens or early 20s.  I don't know what we're doing with our OL but hopefully we can maybe trade up from 62 to pick someone up.
    • I have it on dvr and I timed it four times. I got 10.75, 10.80, 10.74, and 10.78.
    • This is exactly what EDC said tonight
    • My guess is more of a safety profile than they preferred. They clearly wanted Wiggins. They ran that pick up fast. And then when you listen to the press conference, the love for the player was obvious.
