There are certainly more useless metrics than fewest pitches - annual team payroll comes immediately to mind - but maximizing trade value is the gold standard when it comes to signifying an unhealthy confusion between fantasy baseball and actual baseball. If I were smarter, I'd come up with the equation that would explain it once and for all.

McDonald was notorious for the number of warmup pitches he took, so functionally, it was probably a little more than that for him.

Add to that the explosion of opportunity in youth baseball over the last 40 years or so. Pitchers are reaching the pros with far more wear and tear on their bodies than they did in earlier times. Coupled with the trend toward max effort all the time, I'm not surprised at the tendency to rigorously limit pitches per game.

For better or worse, it doesn't strike me as a Mike Elias move to claim him given the glove-throwing and all the rest.
