He wasn't on Covid watch then.
He worked out on Tuesday, expressed concerns about playing and said he planned to wear a mask at first base, then on Wednesday he went off the grid. It seems like a wild coincidence for him to have caught Covid during that window...
Perhaps the team gave him 48 hours to decide whether he wanted to opt out.
That was my thought. Maybe not 48 hours but Davis is deciding whether he will play. After reading about his daughter’s condition, I’d be surprised if he plays.

Man, I'd just like to be "Hey, I'm unavailable today..." at work, with no explanation given.
You think he didn’t give his employer a reason?

This is , IMO. The fans deserve, especially this season, to be told something about why a player is "unavailable" and hasn't shown up for a game. If a player's got a personal problem or a family emergency or is grieving, or needs a day off to get his head straight, that's all we need to know. If (hard to believe here), he's not playing because there's a trade under discussion, he should be with the team, and you can say what you want, or even lie if you want, about why he's on the bench.
But to say that a player is unavailable and is not with the team, and it's none of the fans' damn business why, doesn't strike me as right for a sport that has a real problem with its public. If it’s your business, they’ll tell you. Just because it’s a public job and he makes a lot of money doesn’t mean you get to know what his reasoning for not being there is.

I still don’t understand why Severino is the starting C over Sisco.

Yeah, how about: if a bunch of your teammates test positive, maybe slow down and figure things out before going full steam ahead.
Nah group text to see if they wanna push through and be competitors. Also don’t tell the other team or give them any consideration.

Sounds like he’s seriously considering opting out.

Well he is a "Frenchman" (Garceau) and you know what THEY say about the French? (kidding, of course). Poor Gary Thorne and Encarnacion!
No excuse. Ben is Cajun French haha

I don't know if that has been mentioned, but poor Scott G. just can't say "Rio Ruiz" for the life of him. It is pretty hard to say, I can't fault him.
And it’s pronounced San tan dare, right? Ben was saying it correctly, but the other guy was saying it like San tander

Could we not have the Marlins anywhere near our guys until the remaining Marlins players have been confirmed negative for covid, please?
That'd be great. Thanks.Seriously. I hope all our guys are wearing masks at the plate and in the field.
Marlins should be required to wear masks at all times during the game.

Wow what an absolute joke of a “protocol.” They even send the results of the group text to MLB and the union, who did what?
-

Clearly the protocol is for a 31 year-old shortstop with a career .671 OPS to make the call whether to cancel the game based on group text conversations with his teammates and a consensus that they want to "play hard". The system worked.
I think I’m missing something.

A lot of questions about why the game wasn’t cancelled yesterday with 4 Marlins testing positive. Probably because MLB has no protocols in place for this.

Wouldn't it also smack of stupidity to continue the season without making any changes to make the players safer, just hoping the Marlin situation won't get any worse and that nothing like this will happen again?
You’d think the entire taxi squad would be available for these kind of things instead of just the usual 40 man roster. I don’t know how you prevent it from happening again unless you mandate masks at all times.

That's not how it works.
60 player pool = all of your "minor leagues" for 2020. From that, you still have a 40-man roster. From THAT, you have a 30-man active game roster and a 3-man taxi squad. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Gotcha. But if the plan is to play baseball this year, MLB might have to be flexible with things like the 40 man roster and service time.
-
Just now, interloper said:
Because the taxi squad is 3 players.
12 players will be headed to the COVID IL.
Hence, you now have 40-man issues trying to replace all these guys.
Doesn’t every team have 60 players for this reason? Only 30 were with the team now. Bring up the other 30.

They may end up bringing up their taxi squad. The Marlins team can’t play for a while, so either they don’t play for a few weeks or you bring those players up.
Yeah I don’t see why they don’t bring up mostly their taxi squad and play tomorrow.

What's the appropriate balance between enjoying this baseball season (short term gain) without sacrificing enjoy baseball in Baltimore for many seasons to come (long term gain)?
Do we want to lose every game in extra innings by 1 run? An unearned one at that with the current rule.
No balance. Just win every game

I knew they'd screw up the chance for the #1 draft choice. Have to lose 7 more than Detroit.
Seven more?

The fact that there are so few at Bowie has to hurt overall development. I guess those not invited to camp will get some instruction but it does seem like a wasted development year.

I hope so. As @Ruzious said, this team needs all the help it can get.
I doubt the guy is an answer but I get why Elias would want to take a look. Maybe through the constant waiver wire claims and roster shuffling a guy or two that can stick and be part of a winning team can be found.
Isn’t this the reverse of your mom’s name?

May be the end of the season. Get it while it is here. Manfred.
