Your first baseball moment

I can clearly recall rooting my butt off against the Yankees in every postseason for as long as I can remember haha. And of course I remember the year where the Orioles sucked...and the 14 years after that when we also sucked. I was three in '97 so I can't really remember us ever being good. Best moments of my Orioles fandom are the first half of 05 and game 162 last year. But God help me I still love them.

A. VERY VAGUE MEMORY: Sitting in the living room of my house in Brewster, NY. I was 4 years-old, and my sister was pounding her thighs, screaming, "Come on Jones, catch it!!!" as he waited for the final out of the 1969 World Series to come down from the air into his glove.

B. FIRST LIVE GAME MEMORY: 1971, Yankee Stadium. "Bat Day" (all the fans got bats). A doubleheader between the White Sox and the Yankees. We were in the field level on the 3rd baseline, and I still remember a man with black hair and sunglasses in the front row continually reaching over the railing to try to snare the ground balls that came his way. The Yankees took both ends of the doubleheader, and Chuck Tanner was so frustrated that he threw his red White Sox hat about 50 feet in the air while yelling at the umpire, and getting thrown out of the game. I still remmeber that red hat flying high in the air, as my oldest brother Pete was laughing his ass off at the whole situation.

C. WHEN AND WHY I BECAME AN ORIOLE FAN: I started rooting for the Orioles in October of 1971. When I was a six year-old boy, my whole family was rooting for the Pirates in the World Series because they liked Roberto Clemente ......... so, I rooted for the Orioles. I remember that we won Game 6 when an Oriole runner slid home underneath the Pirates' catcher who had leaped in the air for the throw (I later learned that it was Frank Robinson sliding underneath Manny Sanguillen). I remember all of the Orioles hugging each other at home plate. The next day was a different story. It was a close game. My family was really excited with the Pirates having a 2-1 lead with only one out to go. I still remember the final out of the ninth inning. It was a ground-out. My family whooped it up in the living room while I went outside, put my face in my hands, and pouted on the swing-set in our back yard in Brewster, NY. I've been bleeding orange and back ever since, and I haven't regretted my decision for one minute of my life.

Let's see...I grew up watching games on HTS and would regularly win tickets on the radio the morning after in Fredericksburg, Va. answering questions about the game. I was a member of the Orioles kids club, annually buying the packets at Giant for like 20 bucks with tickets to 10 games and all other types of random stuff.

I also used to go to a lot of minor league games when I was a kid, specifically Prince William Pirates and Richmond Braves games. I particularly remember this young kid named Barry Bonds that I saw play a few times for Prince William. I wonder what ever happened to him.

I used to fall asleep to 1090am playing the games as a kid. Dad would come in and turn off the radio when he went to bed.

My first VIVID memory is watching the final game at Memorial Stadium with my entire family around at my Aunt's. I was 8 years old and it was emotional even though I dont remember going to a game there. Probably more so the fact my granddad, dad and uncle did. :(

When I was six, seeing Mark "The Bird" Fidrych pitch in Tiger Stadium. I don’t know if it was Fydrich talking to the ball or just the whole electric atmosphere in the stadium, but I think that was the moment that I decided watching baseball could be fun. Of course, in the last decade or so the O’s have done their darndest to shake me of this notion.

Maz homer in 1960 is my first sports memory. Also saw Richie (don't call me Dick) Allen hit a ball out of Connie Mack stadium. Didnt think it would ever come down. The hook was first LL game I pitched and won 3-2. Been my passion along with golf my whole life. That fact my son plays is icing on the cake
