Sometimes Your Best Moves are the Ones You Don't Make

Who would you rather have down the stretch, Oswalt, Greinke, Garza, Dempster, assorted others or Tilman? Now that Machado has shown signs of being a solid major leaguer, was Headly really worth Jake, Matusz and a top position prospect? The fact that we are competing without giving away any top prospects bodes well for the future. Maybe DD is lucky, maybe he's a mad genius, whatever. I like where we are right now and I like the direction DD is taking this franchise.

Machado does look like a great move. And it may have saved us Schoop and perhaps Matusz and Arrieta.

True, but like duff says, it is way too early to pass absolute judgments on deals made or not made. Plus the fact that we don't not know for sure what they wanted for him, which was likely a lot. If we could have had him for very little, he would be on the team right now, but the fact that he is still a Padre speaks to the fact that they wanted a lot for him, and rightfully so.

I know I was the first reply, talking about Blanton's misfortune with the Dodgers, but we do not have enough information to judge whether some of the moves made/not made were the right call.

But, if we assume based on what we have seen so far, Machado is a respectable major leaguer, and we had gotten Headley, when does Machado join the O's and play? Machado will have growing pains. He will have to make adjustments. But, if we waited two years to play him, that would have happened two years from now anyway. I would argue that we are better off with Machado, Jake, Matusz and Hoes or whoever the Padres would have asked for than we would be with Headley and Machado wasting away in the minors.

If Machado needed to come up now, he would have come up. Headley and Machado are both versatile players. Put Headley in LF and let Chris Davis take a few days (weeks) off. Put Machado at 2B. Plenty of options. And if we had him, Duquette would be getting a cybermassage from the whole board. I think Headley's OPS is still over 1.100 post-deadline.

Once you've branched off into an alternate universe you can't assume everything else stays constant. In the reality with Headley traded to Baltimore he could have turned his ankle on the jetway arriving at BWI and missed six weeks.

I'm definitely glad we didn't give up anything for those pitchers you listed.. Our system is so thin, I think DD definitely made the right move by not making many moves outside the system. It looks brilliant right now.
