This latest ARoid news has me worried.

Just a thought..

I hate when people develop guilt by association. I just think it is a disservice to Manny even bringing up his name in these type of threads. Someone passing by is going to read this and think, "yeah, he could be dirty too". It just isn't right.

I respect your point, but I disagree. My first thought over the weekend when I saw this news was, "Oh man, oh Manny. Manny looks up to a-rod. I sure hope his admiration doesn't extend to dabbling in this stuff like he does." I started a thread over in the MLB section (where this thread really belongs, IMO) saying something to that effect.

It's the curse of an O's fan after so many years of losing (even after our amazing 2012) -- being worried that the next bad thing is just around the corner. If I can't vent that / share my fears with fellow diehard O's fans, then who?

Of course, no one should say "It's clear Manny is doing it" or anything else unsubstantiated like that. That would be irresponsible. But merely expressing a fear on a message board that is by its nature conversational -- to me, that is totally in-bounds.

Now this is more like it:

Rodriguez Intends To Continue Playing

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [January 31 at 3:19pm CST]

3:18pm: Rodriguez intends to recover from his hip operation and play out the remaining five years on his contract, Yahoo's Tim Brown reports. "Alex is working diligently on his rehabilitation and looks forward to getting back on the field as soon as possible," one source close to Rodriguez told Brown. The third baseman has not heard from MLB or from the Yankees since this week's news broke. Rodriguez doesn't have interest in a discounted buyout and probably wouldn't approve a trade away from the Yankees.

No offense, but Manny isn't a 5yr old boy looking up to his Dad here. I don't know how anyone could look at ARod over the past 3yrs and say "Yeah, that's the guy I want to become." He might idolize ARod, but I don't think that means he'll be following in his exact footsteps. If anything, you'd think he would be learning from ARod's mistakes, not duplicating them.

I really hope you're right. I love the kid.

Things look differently to players on the inside than to fans on the outside.

Manny hangs out with ARoid in the off season works out with him and sometimes parties with him. They have the same agent who is one major sleezebag. Lazano makes Boras look like Brooks. Manny is keeping some bad company

If by bad company you mean people with questionable morals and a knack for being douchy, then yes. But ARod is also the greatest player of his generation. Would we all feel better if he was hanging out more with Mike Bordick? I mean, I hear ya, there is reason to worry that Manny might get wrapped up in something like this, but for now, I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt.

This is kind of contradictory don't you think, didn't you just get finished saying this: "I don't know how anyone could look at ARod over the past 3yrs and say "Yeah, that's the guy I want to become." Do you have an evil twin?

T.J. Quinn and Mike Fish of ESPN.com report that Anthony Bosch of Biogenesis of America clinic injected Alex Rodriguez with performance-enhancing drugs multiple times at the player's Biscayne Bay mansion.

The report states that most athletes associated with the Coral Gables clinic "relied on intermediaries to transport the performance-enhancing drug regimens Bosch provided," but A-Rod was only handled personally by Bosch. Bosch's visits to A-Rod's mansion were reportedly every few weeks, with one visit resulting in Rodriguez kicking Bosch out after he was unable to find a vein needed for an injection. A-Rod's spokesman has already denied the new report, stating that "the allegations are not true."

Great scoop minus one small point. HGH injections are not intravenously.

I said 3 years, not 18. He had an amazing career through 2010. It's only been within the past few years that the allegations and admissions of steroids have come to light. Mark McGuire used steroids... Do you think the Cardinals, or now Dodgers, are nervous he's injecting players in the clubhouse? The guy was a cheater, but he also knows a thing or two about hitting. Same goes for ARod, even if we all agree he is a tool. :D

Aroid has been using PED's since he was in TEX. All indications are he hasnt stopped. McGwire has much more character than ARoid IMO, and is respected by those in the game. ARoid not so much.

    • Good point, no other metropolitan area has more than one team.
    • Could it be that they allowed the Gnats to reside within 30 minutes of their home. Effectively cutting their market in half?
    • Got my all-time low rarity score on today's game - 6.
    • 41 freaking years and here's this guy with the name pickles telling me I should be happy with 91 wins and getting owned in the playoffs again. 😂 😂 I saw a team that looked terrible the second half and probably didn't even deserve that spot the way they were playing .
    • Lol. Here's the funny they know more then you know. Typical Oriole fan who's happy with getting punched in the mouth.
    • I don’t like the wall. I think it’s affecting our hitters. I’ve mentioned before that I think it has totally warped Mountcastle into something he was never really meant to be. The guy came up as a pull-heavy HR hitter, and in his first season-plus (725 PAs), he puts up 38 HRs and a 116 wRC+. Since then, the wRC+ is down to 110, and his approach has totally changed, with his pull numbers plummeting (down from 39% in 2021 to less than 28% this year). He still hits the ball hard, but constantly underachieves his batted ball data — probably because he’s trying to avoid the pull field and hitting balls to the deepest parts of pretty much every other park. Will the same thing happen to Mayo? Maybe he has more pure power, but it’s always going to be a challenge for a RH slugger to survive with that wall. So much harder to do damage.   Beyond that, I think it’s also creating a serious risk of changing our LH hitters’ approaches too. These guys (Henderson, Holliday, Cowser, 2/3 of Adley) have come up with a reputation for being able to drive the ball to all fields. But how long does that continue when they just can’t hit it out to the opposite field? Our LH hitters had a combined 44 wRC+ at OPACY, and only one HR. They had the 3rd most balls hit to LF at home by LHHs, but the lowest wRC+ of any team on those balls (for the second straight year). The Royals, ironically enough, were the only team that was lower than a 70 wRC+ — that’s how much worse our lefties fared going oppo (at OPACY) than everyone else’s. By player: Gunnar Henderson: 112 wRC+ / .160 ISO (51 PAs) Adley Rutschman: 10 wRC+ / .026 ISO (38 PAs) Anthony Santander: 14 wRC+ / .095 ISO (43 PAs) Colton Cowser: 58 wRC+ / .057 ISO (36 PAs) Ryan O’Hearn: 47 wRC+ / .091 ISO (55 PAs) Cedric Mullins: 23 wRC+ / .100 ISO (41 PAs) Jackson Holliday: -72 wRC+ / .000 ISO (16 PAs)   On the road, they had a combined 126 wRC+ (with 9 HRs) going to left field, so it’s not like they’re bad at it. It’s just Death Valley out there in LF for them at OPACY.  How long will it be until these LH guys just start going full pull-happy? Essentially, the opposite of what’s happened with Mountcastle. When (a) your team’s philosophy is to focus on doing damage and (b) you can’t DO damage to the opposite field — the rational endpoint is just to try to pull everything. I don’t think that’s a good outcome. I think it makes them much worse hitters in the other 81 games, and I think it’s a terrible waste of a bunch of really talented hitters with all-field abilities.
