Buck's Questionable Use Of The Pen

Hunter isn't pitching back to back days because he is completely out of gas. He got abused in the first half, way too much of a workload.

Just awful execution by every pitcher Buck brought into the game tonight. Every single one made at least one absolutely terrible pitch.

KRod couldn't pitch that inning...because he pitched Saturday and Sunday. Because apparently it was very important for KRod to pitch in a 10-2 game.

This I will never understand. I have posted about it before. Buck doesn't use the long man to finish up mop-up games constantly and it always drives me nuts.

He leaves Hunter in when he's getting lit up, he leaves Patton in against a righty who smokes lefties (HR), then replaces Patton with O'Day to face a lefty (lefties rock O'Day) and there's your walk off.

Yup, questionable bullpen management. McFarland apparently shall not be touched, KRod is our big RP acquisition...and he's to be used in mop up duty for whatever reason...but we should overuse Hunter, O'Day, and put LOOGY's in to face righties. What the hell is Buck thinking?

At this point send Flaherty down and go with an 8 man pen for a bit. There is no need to have 3 Second Basemen on the team and Flaherty is the only one with an option anyway. Call up Johnson or Gausman until Hammel is ready to come off the DL.

To be fair, it's hard to manage the bullpen in a tie-game late, as you may have to play extra innings. With that said, Showalter needs to show more imagination here.

I don't think this team has any problem with this type of thing. If anything I'd expect them to come back stronger. But we just can't keep giving games away. We could have been 1 back of the Rays with a win.

This is the first time I've been down on Buck the entire season. He's clearly mismanaged the pitching the last few games. NOTE: I retract this statement now that I see I was relying on erroneous stats provided by another poster and my own misreading of who pitched when the last few games.

Yeah, but righties slug .100 points lower, and OPS .55 points lower against Patton then lefties do, I guess that's not the definition of a LOOGY, but I could be wrong.

Good point. It's like Buck is playing poker and telling the dealer "I'm good" after he gets dealt the 3rd card. "No...I don't need the 4th and 5th card, but thanks anyway."
