Speaking of rare outs due to a ricochet ......

OFFNY just had another World Series flashback.

1980, Game Six, the Phillies vs. the Royals.

On a foul popup, Bob Boone muffed the catch, but Pete Rose alertly reached out and caught it before it hit the ground.

I was in 10th grade at the time.

We had an almost identical play last night, this time in the regular season.

ASSISTS

10.11 An assist shall be credited to each fielder who throws or deflects a batted or thrown ball in such a way that a putout results, or would have resulted except for a subsequent error by any fielder. Only one assist and no more shall be credited to each fielder who throws or deflects the ball in a run down play which results in a putout, or would have resulted in a putout, except for a subsequent error.

NOTE: Mere ineffective contact with the ball shall not be considered an assist. "Deflect" shall mean to slow down or change the direction of the ball and thereby effectively assist in putting out a batter or runner.

That was either the first or second out in the 9th inning of the clinching game.

With two outs, in anticipation of Philly fans trying to charge the field, police with German shepherds came onto the field and stood on the warning track on the first and 3rd base line.

Had the play occurred one or two outs later than it did, Boone and Rose might have had to contend with snarling dogs to make the play!

I remember that. There were actually police officers mounted on their horses in foul territory in addition to the German Shepherds, I believe.

The Eagles also had to do that bit with the police mounted on their horses surrounding the outskirts of the field a couple of month's later in the NFC Championship Game, when they were about to beat the Cowboys and go the Super Bowl.

In fact, all 4 Philadelphia teams made it to the finals of their respective sport that season (1980.) The Flyers lost to the Islanders in the Stanley Cup Finals in May, the 76ers lost to the Lakers in the NBA Finals in June, the Phillies beat the Royals in the World Series in October, and the Eagles lost to the Raiders in the Super Bowl in January.
