Santana got a deal just behind Ubaldo's which shows how much you have to pay for enigmatic, flashes of brilliance, inconsistent pitchers.

It also highlights why the orioles have been hesitant to part with any of their top three pitchers or their cheap starting pitching. Fact is, Masterson got $9 million plus for a year and was a worse pitcher than Tillman, Chen or Gonzalez last year whom the Orioles are paying less than $9 million.

Hitting may have been a first priority for many teams this winter, but the cheap pitcher is definitely still the most valuable commodity in baseball.

Exactly. He is downright filthy at times too. Santana has always been the better of the two.

Dumb question-did he cost a pick?

I take Ubaldo- Shorter commitment, and I think it's worth hanging on to him to see if he rediscovers his form.

It would be the same deal for Ervin here if they picked him last year.
