Just Gattis - Not Upton

Any thoughts on just trying to get just Gattis from the Braves? Maybe offer one of our back end starters, plus Matusz (now that we signed Wright), and a B level prospect to get the talks started.

Wieters would automatically become the O's switch-hitting DH. Once Wieters can throw, Gattis either goes to a corner OF spot, or he is the power RH bat at DH - and can spell Wieters behind the dish.

Don't they want Gausman or Bundy?

I was under the impression that the Braves wanted Gausman or Bundy if Upton was in the deal. Gattis alone, I am not certain as to the asking price.

Gattis is a DH. Poor defense. Atlanta would like to trade him based on him being valued as a power-hitting catcher, rather than valued as a DH. Atlanta has to put him at a corner outfield spot if they can't trade him, since there is no DH, but DH is far and away Gattis' best spot. Do you really think Buck has any interest in a poor defensive catcher?

Chen is a free agent after this season. Not a very good value exchange for Atlanta.

But yeah, Matusz has very little value. It is funny how everyone puts him in these trade packages for meaningful pieces.

I would give up a next tier pitching prospect for Gattis. Maybe two of them.
