Kaplan's not bad, but I wouldn't bet the rent on everything I hear from him. IMO, he likes to consider himself more of an insider than he actually is. As far as this rumor goes, however, I could easily see the Cubs wanting Sherrill as Eyre is the only lefty in the pen. None of the left handed spring training "meat" have distinguished themselves at this point. I'd have my doubts about the Cubs including Pie unless they're looking at signing a stop-gap CF option like Lofton or have another deal cooking (Crisp). The only other real CF in camp is Sam Fuld and, to be honest, I don't see him achieving much above the AAAA level.

I disagree with you about Kaplan. He is has as many if not more contacts in baseball and the Cubs, than Miles, Sullivan and Wittenmyer do. Bruce Levine is another one with superior contacts.

I don't think the Orioles will trade Sherrill. I don't think the Cubs should want to buy high on a lefty specialist that suddenly learned to get righties out anyway. And honestly the idea that adding Sherrill gets the Cubs to add Pie and Ceda is bologna. It might be true that the Cubs want Sherrill thrown in if the Cubs have to include Ceda but then it'd be pretty safe to say that won't happen. The Cubs will (still) not trade Pie.

I think the Orioles targeted Sherrill for a reason. I'd be shocked if he's traded.

In the poll a few weeks ago I voted this trade a "longshot" to be done. I guess now I'd move it up to 50-50. If it goes through, I really think it will be interesting to see what MacPhail wants back.

If Sherrill is in the deal Ceda will be thats what Kaplan just said on wgn radio. The Cubs do not want Payton that was from the Sun reporter. So the deal could be Gallagher,Ceda,Veal,Patterson and Cedeno for Roberts and Sherrill if the Orioles would add him. That is a preety good deal for both IMO.

Excellent idea Harry, but 1 major problem. Who are the Cubs going to package with Murton to get that need 4 OF/ CF insurance in that senario? Unless Hendry has a deal worked out with Boston for Marquis or is willing to add an arm like Marshal to the Texas deal for Byrd, what else does he have left?

Not to nit pick, but i have a hard time not seeing a OF coming to the Cubs on this deal unless, Lofton has backed off his demands about a full time mlb gig and is willing to be the utility guy for the Cubs.

I would be all over this deal from a O's stand point, but im not for sure this makes as much sense in a overall comcept.

Why is Ceda such a target for everyone?

Because he has the best fastball in the Cubs system according to BA: http://www.cubshub.com/?p=749

Because

BA' #4 prospect for the Cubs', reliever Jose Ceda, throws gas and looks very good in limited action this Spring. . . . The 6'5 247 lbs reliever could be another Lee Smith according to the Baseball America Prospect Handbook 2008. A
http://www.faketeams.com/story/2008/3/1/15140/85818

Because

The right-hander's fastball, as judged by the major league scouting bureau last summer, rated an 80 on the 20-80 scouting scale, with 80 being the best score.

And Because

Ceda lit it up at Class A Peoria last year, holding hitters hitless over his last 23½ innings of relief work.

FWIW...I listened to Kaplan and the writer from the Sun, Jeff Z as well. Kaplan mentioned a lot of names, including Pie. When he asked why the O's would still want Pie after getting A. Jones, Jeff Z said, "To play left field." Kaplan then mentioned Murton and Jeff Z said he didn't think the O's were interested in Murton, especially since they have Luke Scott.

Also, Kaplan talked about Murton and Marquis may be going to Boston for Coco Crisp. He didn't think that necessarily meant Pie was getting traded, but thought it meant the Cubs would not be interested in Payton. Jeff Z said he heard there would be another player along with Roberts. Kaplan asked if it would be Sherill and Jeff Z said he did not think so.

While Kaplan thought the talks were heating up, Jeff Z said they were more serious but the other Baltimore scout would not be in AZ for a couple of days so he didn't classify them as heating up.

Both felt a deal will get done and did not mention other teams. I wish Kaplan would have asked him if the Indians were as interested as the Cubs.

Great arm...Young.

But still...Just a reliever and a very high walk rate.

Not saying I wouldn't like to have him but people are acting like he is some amazing prospect.

The Cubs fans certainly regard him as an "amazing prospect." I don't remember one post saying that he wasn't untouchable.

If you read between the lines Am wants young arms and Clevland does not have them besides miller who has had elbow problems the last 2 years.Miller will not be traded because they very well could lose Sabathia next year in free angency.Zerbiac also said the Orioles love Gallagher and feel he is a #2 or no worse than #3 and very durable.Zerbiac also said to Roberts will be in a Cubs uniform before spring trainning ends.I believe Hendry wants this deal and will give AM Ceda or Veal to get it done.

Ceda would be your future closer the kid is 20 and throws 95 to 100 with a preety good breaking ball.I watched him pitch Sunday and he has a fast ball that just rises when it get to the plate.Which thats why he didn't give up hit in the midwest league in 23 staight innings last year.

    • Glad Bob Melvin and I don’t see eye to eye on that issue Well said, that make two of us, Bunting Ced down 5-3 with nobody out that late in the game is absurd.
    • Sorry to hear this--wishing you a sound recovery, in time for the O's run to the Series! (That would speed up the healing!)
    • Santander is a good case for the Rule V draft. That's unfortunately the same system that's going to make his next contract potentially look bad. If only he were a couple of years younger. It's hard to commit 25+M to a player at 30+. He's going to be missed in Baltimore, on the field and by the fans, but he's someone that they're going to have to let move on.
    • While I agree and find your comment funny, maybe just say something along the line of”Don’t give up on this team” or “Quite being Debbie downers” instead of assuming they are projecting the own misery in their lives. People might take it better if it doesn’t feel like a personal attack. Either way, that win felt good and I HOPE this is finally the turning point going into the playoffs soon.
    • I've made it clear that if they don't sign Santa and Burnes I'm ok with it as long as the money is allocated to other players they feel that fits their profile better .You know you have people on here like SG who only hears what he wants to hear. I need to learn to ignore that guy.
    • Oh mr know it all. Who most times is wrong. Lol
    • I also think Santander will age better than Trumbo, despite my repeated comparisons of the two players. But I don't know that he will age better than Trumbo and all of the other one dimensional sluggers who were enjoying the retired millionaire sports star lifestyle by their mid-30s, and I don't want the Orioles to be on the hook when the world finds out in 2 or 3 years. Re-signing Santander to a 4 year, $80 million dollar deal is something the DD/PA regime would have done. Hopefully the ME/DR regime is smarter than that (and I think they are). 22nd percentile is really bad, man. And it's unlikely to improve in his 30s.
