Why is Brian Matusz on the roster??

Well, what he is saying has truth. I bet if you did a poll on if Matusz should be tendered or not, 75% would have expected him to be non-tendered. The fact he was tendered is a real head-scratcher...

Hell, I bet the percentage is higher than that. He isn't saying anything new. And he says it all the time.

Well if he talks about Matusz, I need to bring out my Lough hate. I am shocked he struck out to end the game. Glad we have him on the roster! So valuable:)

It isn't about differing opinions. Webberick blasts Matusz in 90% of his posts. There is nothing different when he posts. And then you have calmunderfire come and pretty much call everyone stupid when no one really wanted Matusz to stay.

I think you are missing the point. Matusz detractors have been critical of him since 2011. This isn't a recent thing. It's been built up. Why is he still on the team??????????

The guy that was suppose to replace Matusz - Wesley Wright - is on the DL. Matusz is pitching better then most the guys in the pen. Norris has an ERA of 17.00. Why pick on Matusz. If everyone was pitching well he would be a great Loogy and that would be good enough. Someone has to get tough lefties out.

Brian Matusz had the worst season I've ever seen a major league player have.

2011 season.

OK, as a starter. Buck converted him to a reliever and his last two seasons have been good. You have to keep up with what is going on with the team.

Ubaldo was horrible last year. He looks good so far this year. No use to harp on last year. Turn the page.

Did Matusz pitch well tonight? No, but think a little bit. The Jays are a righty dominant team, it is a horrible match up for him. Buck let him take one for the team tonight not to ruin the rest of the pen. If this was the playoffs I doubt Matusz would face them just like with the Tigers last year. Look he did not pitch well at all tonight and people can argue he is overpayed but Norris caused this mess tonight.

Good point. I am not at all a Matusz fan but tonight is on Bud. As a starting pitcher, he is doing MUCH more damage to the team right now than Matusz. I am OK with how they are using Matusz - LOOGY in close games, mop up in blowouts.

Right, and we can all debate just how valuable that is but Matusz gets ripped all the time. If he can't get lefties out that is one thing. People seem to hold it against Matusz that the Orioles kept him.

How many inherited runners has Matusz allowed to score? I am fine with Matusz as a situational lefty. Nothing more and I prefer not to bring him in with runners on base because he has shown the propensity to give into the pressure and completely lose his command. His stuff seems to look worse every year too. I'm not sure I've seen him break 90 MPH this season where as we've seen him up to 92 or 93 in the past.

The O's are in a tough place with Matusz due to his 3.2 million salary. They can't trade him and they won't swallow their pride and DFA him. Right now he's the only lefty in the bullpen besides Britton. Once Wright comes back it will be interesting to see what happens if Wright can prove to be effective.

The Matusz hated is deep seeded. He was the #4 overall pick. 2011 may be the worst season ever for a starting pitcher. Rumors were going around that he partied too much and didn't work out enough in the offseasons. He makes 3.2 million to be the 6th man in a MLB bullpen. The Moustakas HR. His seasons out of the Bullpen have been just average. We just had to attach a top 100 pick to a similar pitcher in Webb just to get rid of the salary. The pitching on this roster is a cluster****. DD should have moved Matusz and Webb in the offseason to give him some flexibility.

I'll say! Matusz was decent in both 2013 and 2014, and yet, webbrick by his own admission has been harping on this for three years. And will continue to be silent any time Matusz has a good outing and never fail to post negative stuff when he has a bad one.

All that said, Matusz had nothing tonight.

If Marisa (I'm running with it) ever looked decent by the numbers, it's only because of the way he was used (coddled). The repeat threads are old, but the points are (and have been for quite some time) valid.

You seem to be one of the few smart guys around here. I too saw this years ago, that Brian Matusz was trash. It only took most the fanbase half a decade to figure that one out.
Brian Matusz might not be a very good pitcher, especially against RH batters. But neither Matusz nor any other Oriole player is "trash." You don't have to repect him as a pitcher, but you should respect him as a human being.

    • Good point, no other metropolitan area has more than one team.
    • Could it be that they allowed the Gnats to reside within 30 minutes of their home. Effectively cutting their market in half?
    • Got my all-time low rarity score on today's game - 6.
    • 41 freaking years and here's this guy with the name pickles telling me I should be happy with 91 wins and getting owned in the playoffs again. 😂 😂 I saw a team that looked terrible the second half and probably didn't even deserve that spot the way they were playing .
    • Lol. Here's the funny they know more then you know. Typical Oriole fan who's happy with getting punched in the mouth.
    • I don’t like the wall. I think it’s affecting our hitters. I’ve mentioned before that I think it has totally warped Mountcastle into something he was never really meant to be. The guy came up as a pull-heavy HR hitter, and in his first season-plus (725 PAs), he puts up 38 HRs and a 116 wRC+. Since then, the wRC+ is down to 110, and his approach has totally changed, with his pull numbers plummeting (down from 39% in 2021 to less than 28% this year). He still hits the ball hard, but constantly underachieves his batted ball data — probably because he’s trying to avoid the pull field and hitting balls to the deepest parts of pretty much every other park. Will the same thing happen to Mayo? Maybe he has more pure power, but it’s always going to be a challenge for a RH slugger to survive with that wall. So much harder to do damage.   Beyond that, I think it’s also creating a serious risk of changing our LH hitters’ approaches too. These guys (Henderson, Holliday, Cowser, 2/3 of Adley) have come up with a reputation for being able to drive the ball to all fields. But how long does that continue when they just can’t hit it out to the opposite field? Our LH hitters had a combined 44 wRC+ at OPACY, and only one HR. They had the 3rd most balls hit to LF at home by LHHs, but the lowest wRC+ of any team on those balls (for the second straight year). The Royals, ironically enough, were the only team that was lower than a 70 wRC+ — that’s how much worse our lefties fared going oppo (at OPACY) than everyone else’s. By player: Gunnar Henderson: 112 wRC+ / .160 ISO (51 PAs) Adley Rutschman: 10 wRC+ / .026 ISO (38 PAs) Anthony Santander: 14 wRC+ / .095 ISO (43 PAs) Colton Cowser: 58 wRC+ / .057 ISO (36 PAs) Ryan O’Hearn: 47 wRC+ / .091 ISO (55 PAs) Cedric Mullins: 23 wRC+ / .100 ISO (41 PAs) Jackson Holliday: -72 wRC+ / .000 ISO (16 PAs)   On the road, they had a combined 126 wRC+ (with 9 HRs) going to left field, so it’s not like they’re bad at it. It’s just Death Valley out there in LF for them at OPACY.  How long will it be until these LH guys just start going full pull-happy? Essentially, the opposite of what’s happened with Mountcastle. When (a) your team’s philosophy is to focus on doing damage and (b) you can’t DO damage to the opposite field — the rational endpoint is just to try to pull everything. I don’t think that’s a good outcome. I think it makes them much worse hitters in the other 81 games, and I think it’s a terrible waste of a bunch of really talented hitters with all-field abilities.
