Travis Snider needs to go! (DFA)

Brit said last night that the O's would probably cut a position player when they activate Jason Garcia this weekend. I would think that Snider is the one to go.

I'd like to know what happened to Snider's swing between last season's impressive second half with the Pirates, fine start with the O's, and now. The difference is so stark, the problem(s) must be something that can be spotted and coached.
Play Lough in LF and bat him ninth. At least you get great D and speed at the bottom of the order....if he ever gets on.

Garcia has value. I'd rather have a an extra arm in the pen. Obviously the team has shifted and are playing "playoff" baseball. Well part of playing that style is pulling SP's early when they are struggling. We've lost a couple winnable games over the last 10 days where it was pretty obvious that the pitcher was done (IDC about the stat line), and Buck had to try and squeeze the 5th and 6th inning out of them. So having an extra arm is more valuable than Snider.

I'm also coming around to the idea of just throwing Lough out there and batting him 9th and making our defense even that much better. If Lough can play great D and impact the game with his speed he could be worth it. But at this point we need someone that has some higher upside. I could live with Lough over Snider but that aint saying too much.

I'd go with Mancini or Alvarez. I'm a believer that Mancini could provide us a spark for a few weeks until rosters expand. Davis can go back to RF and Mancini could play 1st vs RHP and DH vs LHP, with Reimold playing RF/LF.

Garret Atkins II?

As bad as Snider has ben lately, Atkins was a special kind of suck. He put up an OPS+ of 64 in Colorado the season before we acquired him and then put up an OPS+ of 55 with us. He had already begun his swift decline long before joining Birdland. I have no idea what happened to Travis. At least he was on an upswing last year.

Atkins might have been the worst free agent signing in Oriole history. $4 million for -1.3 WAR in just 44 games. He scored five runs and drove in nine. There was just no plausible reason to sign him to anything above a minor league deal.

I would love to know what games we lost by leavng he starer to long. Lets look at the last 5 loses.

Oakland lost 5-0. Can't in a game you don't score. Gonzo left in the 5th down already.

Sunday vs Tigers. 6-1 loss we were down 3-0 in the first Ublado gave up 3 in the 5th but that was after he had retired 12 straight. I guess Buck should have known he would just fall apart right there.

Tigers 9-8. We were down early again and Buck took Gonzo out very early in the third inning as soon as he got in trouble again nothing you can do about that and then Norris put gas on the fire.

Tampa Bay 3-1 We had the lead and Tilman was cruising into the 8th allowing just 2 hits and 2 walks. After lead off walk he pulled him for O'day who was awful.

New York 9-3 We were down 6-1 in the third when Ubaldo was pulled.

New York 4-3. We gave up 3 early then Gausman settled down and shut the Yanks down before a homer in the 5th. He defianlty not leave him in to long as he was in controll but had a bad pitch.

New York 3-2 Chen gave up two early then again settled down but gave up 1 in the 6th but again he was pitching well and had no reason to come out with just 75 pitches going into the 6th and just two runs given up.

Tigers 7-3 We were down early again trailing 6-2 after 3 innings. That again on the starter.

So not once since the All star break have we lost a game when a starter was even remotly left in to long.

Snider has no bat speed. He does have a decent eye, but any pitcher with a decent fastball can get it by him.

So my question is this-do we have scouts? How didn't our scouts catch this before the trade? Serious question.

Great question. I was not a big fan of this trade because of what we gave up to get him. Those two pitchers are still question marks, but I would much rather have them in our system than Snider. I felt that way at the time of the trade as well. I would have been OK with one or the other, but not both.

    • Good point, no other metropolitan area has more than one team.
    • Could it be that they allowed the Gnats to reside within 30 minutes of their home. Effectively cutting their market in half?
    • Got my all-time low rarity score on today's game - 6.
    • 41 freaking years and here's this guy with the name pickles telling me I should be happy with 91 wins and getting owned in the playoffs again. 😂 😂 I saw a team that looked terrible the second half and probably didn't even deserve that spot the way they were playing .
    • Lol. Here's the funny they know more then you know. Typical Oriole fan who's happy with getting punched in the mouth.
    • I don’t like the wall. I think it’s affecting our hitters. I’ve mentioned before that I think it has totally warped Mountcastle into something he was never really meant to be. The guy came up as a pull-heavy HR hitter, and in his first season-plus (725 PAs), he puts up 38 HRs and a 116 wRC+. Since then, the wRC+ is down to 110, and his approach has totally changed, with his pull numbers plummeting (down from 39% in 2021 to less than 28% this year). He still hits the ball hard, but constantly underachieves his batted ball data — probably because he’s trying to avoid the pull field and hitting balls to the deepest parts of pretty much every other park. Will the same thing happen to Mayo? Maybe he has more pure power, but it’s always going to be a challenge for a RH slugger to survive with that wall. So much harder to do damage.   Beyond that, I think it’s also creating a serious risk of changing our LH hitters’ approaches too. These guys (Henderson, Holliday, Cowser, 2/3 of Adley) have come up with a reputation for being able to drive the ball to all fields. But how long does that continue when they just can’t hit it out to the opposite field? Our LH hitters had a combined 44 wRC+ at OPACY, and only one HR. They had the 3rd most balls hit to LF at home by LHHs, but the lowest wRC+ of any team on those balls (for the second straight year). The Royals, ironically enough, were the only team that was lower than a 70 wRC+ — that’s how much worse our lefties fared going oppo (at OPACY) than everyone else’s. By player: Gunnar Henderson: 112 wRC+ / .160 ISO (51 PAs) Adley Rutschman: 10 wRC+ / .026 ISO (38 PAs) Anthony Santander: 14 wRC+ / .095 ISO (43 PAs) Colton Cowser: 58 wRC+ / .057 ISO (36 PAs) Ryan O’Hearn: 47 wRC+ / .091 ISO (55 PAs) Cedric Mullins: 23 wRC+ / .100 ISO (41 PAs) Jackson Holliday: -72 wRC+ / .000 ISO (16 PAs)   On the road, they had a combined 126 wRC+ (with 9 HRs) going to left field, so it’s not like they’re bad at it. It’s just Death Valley out there in LF for them at OPACY.  How long will it be until these LH guys just start going full pull-happy? Essentially, the opposite of what’s happened with Mountcastle. When (a) your team’s philosophy is to focus on doing damage and (b) you can’t DO damage to the opposite field — the rational endpoint is just to try to pull everything. I don’t think that’s a good outcome. I think it makes them much worse hitters in the other 81 games, and I think it’s a terrible waste of a bunch of really talented hitters with all-field abilities.
