Travis Snider needs to go! (DFA)

I sure hope this title get's changed ASAP. The guy just doesn't fit on the team anymore with the current roster makeup. We really need another RH bat so Parades doesn't have to play vs LHP. The guy had a .293 OPS last month in 39 PA's. He's only going to get another 30 PA's (max) until rosters expand in September. There is no way DD is going to tender him a contract for 2016 and go to arbitration. Everyone on our bench fills a role.

Joseph- back up catcher

Reimold- RH bat for LHP

Lough- Defensive replacement, Pinch Runner

Flaherty- Can play all over the field with plus defense around the IF.

Snider just doesn't bring anything to the table. Yeah he takes a pitch. But that's because he can't do anything with MLB fastballs. According to BBREF's splits he has a .603 OPS against power pitchers and a .540 OPS against average pitchers. The numbers back up the fact that he's just over matched.

Hopefully we'll be able to make a waiver trade for an OF/1b type once more teams fall out the race. Or Bring back Delmon Young. But until then I'd rather see Alvarez/Walker/Mancini up here and batting 9th. They are all RH. So Parades wouldn't have to play vs LHP. Heck at this point you could sell me one 3 catchers and bring up Clevenger. We've seen a slew of pitchers get a look from Norfolk but no position players. Walker for 1 game to DH vs a LHP. Navarro when Hardy and Schoop were hurt. Reimold. Clevenger for a week after we finally DFA'd Lavarnaway. It's time to use the same roster strategy with our hitters that we use with the pitchers. Let's see what they can do. Because Snider is not the answer and won't be back next year.

But what if I was an insider, then what?

Man, Duquette really completely and utterly failed this offseason.

96 win team and everything he "did" screwed this team for 2015 and beyond:

- Flirted with Blue Jays and was distracted

- Let Cruz walk without having someone viable replace him

- Let Markakis walk without having someone viable replace him (although at the time, Snider MIGHT have been lightning in a bottle)

- Let Miller walk (this I don't mind, because I hate overpaying for relievers, let alone oft injured ones)

- Hoped Pearce would live up to 2014 season

- Hoped Wieters would contribute (missed months)

- Hoped Hardy would be healthy and effective

- Thought Pearce, Parmelee, Lough, Young, Snider, De Aza could get the 2 COF spots. Parmelee = DFA, Young = DFA, Snider = DFA, De Aza = DFA then traded, Pearce = hurt, Lough = backup OF

- Hoped Norris would be the Norris from 2014 even though his numbers suggested he wouldn't...he didn't sell high...and now Norris is DFA'd

- Salary dumped Tommy Hunter for a failed Cubs prospect and bullpen flexibility...all because Duquette put together a roster with little to no flexibility

He makes this big hoopla that the O's would be buyers at trade deadline...proceeds to acquire Parra and Junior Lake.

Now we have Junior Lake called up. Why?

What a disaster.

Well I bet Rene is celebrating. There seems to be a lot of hate for Snider by some

on this board. I really don't understand it. I wish Snider good luck.

Agreed. The bile seems a bit over the top. It's not like the guy wasn't trying. But, I agree it was time to try something else.

I doubt many hate Snider himself, just his play. To his credit he made one of the best catches of the season and hit one of the longest HR.

So my question is this-do we have scouts? How didn't our scouts catch this before the trade? Serious question.

In all seriousness, Travis Snider is a perfect example of why sabermetrics don't always work. It was obvious that this guy had a very limited upside

The fallacy of WAR is that it is impossible to sum up a players value into one stat. Sabre-metrics has it's place but as you aggregate 100's of stats into one value, it becomes less and less accurate.

    • Good point, no other metropolitan area has more than one team.
    • Could it be that they allowed the Gnats to reside within 30 minutes of their home. Effectively cutting their market in half?
    • Got my all-time low rarity score on today's game - 6.
    • 41 freaking years and here's this guy with the name pickles telling me I should be happy with 91 wins and getting owned in the playoffs again. 😂 😂 I saw a team that looked terrible the second half and probably didn't even deserve that spot the way they were playing .
    • Lol. Here's the funny they know more then you know. Typical Oriole fan who's happy with getting punched in the mouth.
    • I don’t like the wall. I think it’s affecting our hitters. I’ve mentioned before that I think it has totally warped Mountcastle into something he was never really meant to be. The guy came up as a pull-heavy HR hitter, and in his first season-plus (725 PAs), he puts up 38 HRs and a 116 wRC+. Since then, the wRC+ is down to 110, and his approach has totally changed, with his pull numbers plummeting (down from 39% in 2021 to less than 28% this year). He still hits the ball hard, but constantly underachieves his batted ball data — probably because he’s trying to avoid the pull field and hitting balls to the deepest parts of pretty much every other park. Will the same thing happen to Mayo? Maybe he has more pure power, but it’s always going to be a challenge for a RH slugger to survive with that wall. So much harder to do damage.   Beyond that, I think it’s also creating a serious risk of changing our LH hitters’ approaches too. These guys (Henderson, Holliday, Cowser, 2/3 of Adley) have come up with a reputation for being able to drive the ball to all fields. But how long does that continue when they just can’t hit it out to the opposite field? Our LH hitters had a combined 44 wRC+ at OPACY, and only one HR. They had the 3rd most balls hit to LF at home by LHHs, but the lowest wRC+ of any team on those balls (for the second straight year). The Royals, ironically enough, were the only team that was lower than a 70 wRC+ — that’s how much worse our lefties fared going oppo (at OPACY) than everyone else’s. By player: Gunnar Henderson: 112 wRC+ / .160 ISO (51 PAs) Adley Rutschman: 10 wRC+ / .026 ISO (38 PAs) Anthony Santander: 14 wRC+ / .095 ISO (43 PAs) Colton Cowser: 58 wRC+ / .057 ISO (36 PAs) Ryan O’Hearn: 47 wRC+ / .091 ISO (55 PAs) Cedric Mullins: 23 wRC+ / .100 ISO (41 PAs) Jackson Holliday: -72 wRC+ / .000 ISO (16 PAs)   On the road, they had a combined 126 wRC+ (with 9 HRs) going to left field, so it’s not like they’re bad at it. It’s just Death Valley out there in LF for them at OPACY.  How long will it be until these LH guys just start going full pull-happy? Essentially, the opposite of what’s happened with Mountcastle. When (a) your team’s philosophy is to focus on doing damage and (b) you can’t DO damage to the opposite field — the rational endpoint is just to try to pull everything. I don’t think that’s a good outcome. I think it makes them much worse hitters in the other 81 games, and I think it’s a terrible waste of a bunch of really talented hitters with all-field abilities.
