Wieters Pulled from the game

Yahoo says he had a hamstring strain. The lack of a thread about this well after the game is over is very telling. I think we're all a bit apathetic about Wieters at this point. He's having a decent year, I guess, which is the norm for him ("decent, I guess"). Maybe we can get him back on the cheap and play him at first after we fail to sign Davis. His production there wouldn't be great but it would probably be better than any of the internal 1B options. If he doesn't take a QO, he could end up like Morales and not have a job until June 2016, and the job he would get would be for a one-year deal at half the QO. Would you give up a draft pick for him if you were another team? I wouldn't.

I think he could easily be a guy who makes a comeback and turns into someone we really miss. Last year he looked on his way to breaking out before his injury. 2013 and 2015 he's been pretty mediocre but even so I greatly prefer him on the time than off. Before 2013, he had a nice stretch of years of good production at catcher. A good player and leader to have around. I respect that this is all before he turned into a 30-something catcher, so maybe he could age quickly, too.

Just got that feeling we'll be looking at threads lamenting Joseph-Clevenger next year OPS'ing .600 while Matt is .750 and why didn't the Orioles give him four years and on and on. Joseph has acquitted himself well and I love him. Hey, if he produces like he has been, he's a great baseball player. That seems like a tall order for a guy with his career trajectory but I love the underdog story.

Excuse me, on the "team."

Buck said that Matt will not play today and will be re-evaluated on Friday. Clevenger is probably trying to get to Seattle for today's 3:40 eastern time game. Clevenger up and Lake down would be the move I would expect.

'

This may really be for the best. MW get's 2 days off complete rest, and we get the bat we need up here. Hopefully Matt is ok and this is what it took to get Clevenger up here to get AB's. A one day sacrifice I'm willing to make. If MW is healthy, here's the lineup I would have on Friday vs the A's. Chavez RHP

Machado 3B

Parra LF

Jones CF

Davis RF

MW DH

Schoop 2B

Clevenger 1B

Hardy SS

Joseph C

I like that lineup. No Reimold and no Parades.

They usually leave for the next city from the stadium in the minors. No nonstops from RDU. The quickest one stop flight is around 7 hours.

Evidently they didn't leave until today.

Thanks for the update. The thing that i don't understand if they were still in Richmond why would he not just take the early am flight out of Richmond that also gets in around 10:55?

From Norfolk, the earliest one can get to Seattle is 12:03 PM and that is leaving at 5:20 AM. It is then a 20 minute car ride to the stadium, so he wouldn't get there until game time or minutes before.

Thanks. I guess they didn't bus to Raleigh overnight.

“The transportation industry didn’t cooperate," Showalter said. "We’ll see what tomorrow brings. We had it set up and we just couldn’t get it [to work]. It’s hard to go from the East Coast to West Coast even though you pick up time. We tried. We tried until about 1:30, 2 o’clock in the morning. … [The Tides] are busing to Durham today. They were in Norfolk last night. Norfolk has a great airport, but it doesn’t offer some of the services [others do]. It’s a tough place to have an injury before a 12:40 game. We tried.”

    • Good point, no other metropolitan area has more than one team.
    • Could it be that they allowed the Gnats to reside within 30 minutes of their home. Effectively cutting their market in half?
    • Got my all-time low rarity score on today's game - 6.
    • 41 freaking years and here's this guy with the name pickles telling me I should be happy with 91 wins and getting owned in the playoffs again. 😂 😂 I saw a team that looked terrible the second half and probably didn't even deserve that spot the way they were playing .
    • Lol. Here's the funny they know more then you know. Typical Oriole fan who's happy with getting punched in the mouth.
    • I don’t like the wall. I think it’s affecting our hitters. I’ve mentioned before that I think it has totally warped Mountcastle into something he was never really meant to be. The guy came up as a pull-heavy HR hitter, and in his first season-plus (725 PAs), he puts up 38 HRs and a 116 wRC+. Since then, the wRC+ is down to 110, and his approach has totally changed, with his pull numbers plummeting (down from 39% in 2021 to less than 28% this year). He still hits the ball hard, but constantly underachieves his batted ball data — probably because he’s trying to avoid the pull field and hitting balls to the deepest parts of pretty much every other park. Will the same thing happen to Mayo? Maybe he has more pure power, but it’s always going to be a challenge for a RH slugger to survive with that wall. So much harder to do damage.   Beyond that, I think it’s also creating a serious risk of changing our LH hitters’ approaches too. These guys (Henderson, Holliday, Cowser, 2/3 of Adley) have come up with a reputation for being able to drive the ball to all fields. But how long does that continue when they just can’t hit it out to the opposite field? Our LH hitters had a combined 44 wRC+ at OPACY, and only one HR. They had the 3rd most balls hit to LF at home by LHHs, but the lowest wRC+ of any team on those balls (for the second straight year). The Royals, ironically enough, were the only team that was lower than a 70 wRC+ — that’s how much worse our lefties fared going oppo (at OPACY) than everyone else’s. By player: Gunnar Henderson: 112 wRC+ / .160 ISO (51 PAs) Adley Rutschman: 10 wRC+ / .026 ISO (38 PAs) Anthony Santander: 14 wRC+ / .095 ISO (43 PAs) Colton Cowser: 58 wRC+ / .057 ISO (36 PAs) Ryan O’Hearn: 47 wRC+ / .091 ISO (55 PAs) Cedric Mullins: 23 wRC+ / .100 ISO (41 PAs) Jackson Holliday: -72 wRC+ / .000 ISO (16 PAs)   On the road, they had a combined 126 wRC+ (with 9 HRs) going to left field, so it’s not like they’re bad at it. It’s just Death Valley out there in LF for them at OPACY.  How long will it be until these LH guys just start going full pull-happy? Essentially, the opposite of what’s happened with Mountcastle. When (a) your team’s philosophy is to focus on doing damage and (b) you can’t DO damage to the opposite field — the rational endpoint is just to try to pull everything. I don’t think that’s a good outcome. I think it makes them much worse hitters in the other 81 games, and I think it’s a terrible waste of a bunch of really talented hitters with all-field abilities.
