Jones - "We need the support of our fans ...because we're still going to make a run"

They've got it from me.

I'll be there (at O.P.A.C.Y.) for 3 games in late Sepetmber/early October against either the Blue Jays or the Yankees.

I'm glad that Adam is speaking out like this, because I firmly believe that a team needs their fans the most when they are down ...... and right now, the Orioles are very much down.

You're the one guy that understands what Adam is driving at. Kudos.

Here's one for you.. assuming we continue to slide (no reason to think otherwise), will Jones call out the FO this off-season for letting us down this past year by not going for it? This past winter I remember him making some pretty disgruntled comments about the FO.

I will be out of town, visiting family, for the next 10 days. But I'll be back at OPACY until the end of the season. I'll be rooting as hard as I can.

And to add: I'll be rooting for my favorite players (you all know who they are) even though some of them are really tanking. When players and teams are tanking, that's when they need fan support the most.

The word fan has its origins in the word fanatic for a reason.....its our nature as fans to complain and whine lol.

That said, the moment you stop caring about your team, is the moment your no longer a fan in my book. Win or lose, happy with the results or not, I always care about this team and always hope for at some level a brighter tomorrow even if the fanatic in my is having trouble seeing it.

I never doubt that that this team is not trying to win, and I still root for them every night. The only problem is, I think this team just doesn't have any gas left in the tank right now. We needed a couple pieces during the trading deadline that we did not acquire. It did not help we did not have anything worth offering that we were willing to part with. I hope they continue to play their best every night, with the small chance they can make that last wild card spot but I don't think this team has a shot to beat any current playoff hopeful teams in a 5 or 7 game match up.

I think you are exaggerating his initial comments, was he upset, yes, Nick was his friend, but followup comments from him explained that he understood the situation.

All I can say is that if the Orioles do make a run at this point, I will start questioning reality, because at that point we are clearly living in a movie. :laughlol:

I won't stop backing my team though, not ever. And some perspective... a bad half season of baseball is nothing compared to a decade and a half. I didn't leave my team then and I won't do it now either.

I admire Jones' fire, but I think he's just spouting the company line at this point. This team has yet to prove they can beat a team in the playoff hunt.

Moving on to a different topic...

Jones seemed pretty miffed that his buddy Markakis was not brought back, and seemed a bit perturbed about the lack of moves we made this offseason. He took some shots at the front office if I'm not mistaken. I wonder if he would ask to be dealt this offseason? Again, I'm just speculating about his unhappiness, but I'm guessing if we don't make some big changes this offseason, he could be one very unhappy camper.

Jones had this to say in Feb 2015, after popping off in Dec 2014:

Ultimately, Jones said he doesn't think Markakis has any hard feelings against the Orioles.

"No," Jones said. "He’s moved on. He understood it's a business and moved on.”

"I'm just going to start going to Peter. Screw the middle men."

One cryptic tweet. As far as I can remember, that is the only negative comment AJ has made about the organization in 8 years as an Oriole. And people wonder why Chen wants an interpreter in front of press.

I believe the players are trying. As others have said, perhaps too much, playing through injuries (Miguel and JJ) and such.

The one guy who I believe was selfish and really hurt the team was Bud Norris. I believe he was still recovering from the virus, maybe pitching hurt as well, but felt the pressure to pitch because it is a contract year.

One thing I'm sure of -- Adam Jones will give 100% until the last game has been played.

Well see if the team has another run left in them. Even if they do, I think the gap is probably too big to close now. But I'd rather see them make a run than not.

Though Markakis was in the downside of his career, he deserved to be a lifetime Oriole, and he couldn't be worse than what the Orioles have trotted out in the outfield this year. I really didn't like that move.

That's good. I'm sure many Orioles fans have felt the urge to slap someone over the last few series, as well.

    • I don’t like the wall. I think it’s affecting our hitters. I’ve mentioned before that I think it has totally warped Mountcastle into something he was never really meant to be. The guy came up as a pull-heavy HR hitter, and in his first season-plus (725 PAs), he puts up 38 HRs and a 116 wRC+. Since then, the wRC+ is down to 110, and his approach has totally changed, with his pull numbers plummeting (down from 39% in 2021 to less than 28% this year). He still hits the ball hard, but constantly underachieves his batted ball data — probably because he’s trying to avoid the pull field and hitting balls to the deepest parts of pretty much every other park. Will the same thing happen to Mayo? Maybe he has more pure power, but it’s always going to be a challenge for a RH slugger to survive with that wall. So much harder to do damage.   Beyond that, I think it’s also creating a serious risk of changing our LH hitters’ approaches too. These guys (Henderson, Holliday, Cowser, 2/3 of Adley) have come up with a reputation for being able to drive the ball to all fields. But how long does that continue when they just can’t hit it out to the opposite field? Our LH hitters had a combined 44 wRC+ at OPACY, and only one HR. They had the 3rd most balls hit to LF at home by LHHs, but the lowest wRC+ of any team on those balls (for the second straight year). The Royals, ironically enough, were the only team that was lower than a 70 wRC+ — that’s how much worse our lefties fared going oppo (at OPACY) than everyone else’s. By player: Gunnar Henderson: 112 wRC+ / .160 ISO (51 PAs) Adley Rutschman: 10 wRC+ / .026 ISO (38 PAs) Anthony Santander: 14 wRC+ / .095 ISO (43 PAs) Colton Cowser: 58 wRC+ / .057 ISO (36 PAs) Ryan O’Hearn: 47 wRC+ / .091 ISO (55 PAs) Cedric Mullins: 23 wRC+ / .100 ISO (41 PAs) Jackson Holliday: -72 wRC+ / .000 ISO (16 PAs)   On the road, they had a combined 126 wRC+ (with 9 HRs) going to left field, so it’s not like they’re bad at it. It’s just Death Valley out there in LF for them at OPACY.  How long will it be until these LH guys just start going full pull-happy? Essentially, the opposite of what’s happened with Mountcastle. When (a) your team’s philosophy is to focus on doing damage and (b) you can’t DO damage to the opposite field — the rational endpoint is just to try to pull everything. I don’t think that’s a good outcome. I think it makes them much worse hitters in the other 81 games, and I think it’s a terrible waste of a bunch of really talented hitters with all-field abilities.
    • Which core players beside Adley Rutschman struggled?
    • The entire commentary on Hyde and the team seems odd but have to admit there does seem to be something off.   Team seemed adrift for most of the 2nd half.  A very talented team went off the rails midway through the season mostly due to core players struggling and rookies not performing or filling in adequately for a few injured starters.    None of the position player trade line acquisitions performed that well.     Hyde seemed in over his head or at a loss on how to correct things, but he must have convinced Elias that he has a plan to fix things.  Curious to see what happens with the coaching staff.
    • And or give up picks for QO pitchers
    • They've averaged 92 wins a year the last 3 years in the most difficult environment in the sport with basically the greatest disadvantages in the sport. Something tells me they know a hell of a lot more about this than you do.
    • Not when they aren't worthy. At minimum the hitting coaches should be el gonezo
    • That is the sign of a stable and successful organization.  Firing people.  Who could argue that?
