I don't see why there is fiction between Buck and Dan over the Toronto thing. I think Buck understands why Dan wanted to go. I think Buck understands why Angelos wanted to hold Dan to his contract and demand a high price to let Dan go. Buck and Dan are probably both are unhappy for the way the season has gone. I don't call that tension between to the two of them.

If Buck is mad at anyone its probably his pitchers for not being about to repeat their 2014 performances. Or maybe some of the guys that had be released or traded for non performance. I doubt that affect his relationship with Dan.

Is their tension be Dan and Angelos? Maybe. But nothing a winning 2016 would not cure.

If Dan wants to be seen in the industry as a desirable baseball President on day he has to do one thing. Show that he can keep the O's as a winning franchise.

From a talent perspective Baltimore was a very enticing job last time around. The industry perception of the job is what kept folks away. I don't think it's a lack of talent or payroll that would keep a would-be GM away. I think it's the same crap that would arguably keep GMs from wanting to jump between Moreno and Scioscia.

The idea that the organization will not give you the latitude to pursue better opportunities is a bigger deal for the guys lower on the food chain, since GMs don't have many opportunities for a "bump". But it's enough of a concern that you notice when an organization is perceived as obstructionist.

Maybe none of it matters. Maybe it does. I hear the same complaints about the Orioles from scouts, same statements folks wouldn't take a promotion in Baltimore. Winning seasons don't erase the issues with which people are concerned when pursuing potential employment gigs. That's all I meant.

Shapiro was not executive of the year. In fact his future with the organization was in doubt and he was not subject to a long term contract.

It's simple. If you want to work in Baltimore, don't accept a six year contract. Get a shorter one with less personal security. Besides, Klentak was given the opportunity to leave. As was Joe Jordan. Scott Profrock, Kevin Malone. Heck. Even Larry Luccino!

Just because the guy that sports sites write about won't necessarily want the gig in Baltimore doesn't mean Baltimore can't get someone good. That's the silver lining. No one can even figure out if they are interviewing the right people. This stuff is not as precise as people think.

Yet they turned a franchise around from 14 years of losing. Their joint working is well documented at this point. That they are not drinking buddies is not really relevant. Winning is.

From what I have read, Dan and Buck talk every day. All year long. They plan together.

I don't think the baseball community has it in for the O's, I think they don't like PA. He is not a member of their club, he has mistreated many in their fraternity, and doesn't play the game the right way from their perspective. No doubt they are happy to feed hungry writers any dirt they might have that puts him and his organization in a bad light.

I agree he is an easy target. I haven't read many positive stories about him even in the previous 3 seasons.

I'm sick of that attitude. He signed a 6-year deal that Angelos didn't have to give him. I'm sure he's disappointed Angelos didn't let him go, but I don't consider it bush league for a team to hold a guy to a contract, especially when they already gave him a better deal once that provided tremendous long term security. Duquette should do his job professionally regardless of any disappointment on his part, and frankly, I think he has done that. I'm not one of those people who believes Dan would have done anything differently for the Orioles last winter if Toronto hadn't come knocking.

If there is friction between the two it doesn't have to be about the Toronto situation. How many managers in the sport are like Buck? Most now are just puppets for their GM.

So if you are a business owner and have a valued employee with tons of proprietary information under contract and it comes to your attention that the employee is talking to one of your competitors behind your back with the intention of jumping ship and then probably trying to hire away a bunch of your other employees you would be fine with him just leaving?

    • I don’t like the wall. I think it’s affecting our hitters. I’ve mentioned before that I think it has totally warped Mountcastle into something he was never really meant to be. The guy came up as a pull-heavy HR hitter, and in his first season-plus (725 PAs), he puts up 38 HRs and a 116 wRC+. Since then, the wRC+ is down to 110, and his approach has totally changed, with his pull numbers plummeting (down from 39% in 2021 to less than 28% this year). He still hits the ball hard, but constantly underachieves his batted ball data — probably because he’s trying to avoid the pull field and hitting balls to the deepest parts of pretty much every other park. Will the same thing happen to Mayo? Maybe he has more pure power, but it’s always going to be a challenge for a RH slugger to survive with that wall. So much harder to do damage.   Beyond that, I think it’s also creating a serious risk of changing our LH hitters’ approaches too. These guys (Henderson, Holliday, Cowser, 2/3 of Adley) have come up with a reputation for being able to drive the ball to all fields. But how long does that continue when they just can’t hit it out to the opposite field? Our LH hitters had a combined 44 wRC+ at OPACY, and only one HR. They had the 3rd most balls hit to LF at home by LHHs, but the lowest wRC+ of any team on those balls (for the second straight year). The Royals, ironically enough, were the only team that was lower than a 70 wRC+ — that’s how much worse our lefties fared going oppo (at OPACY) than everyone else’s. By player: Gunnar Henderson: 112 wRC+ / .160 ISO (51 PAs) Adley Rutschman: 10 wRC+ / .026 ISO (38 PAs) Anthony Santander: 14 wRC+ / .095 ISO (43 PAs) Colton Cowser: 58 wRC+ / .057 ISO (36 PAs) Ryan O’Hearn: 47 wRC+ / .091 ISO (55 PAs) Cedric Mullins: 23 wRC+ / .100 ISO (41 PAs) Jackson Holliday: -72 wRC+ / .000 ISO (16 PAs)   On the road, they had a combined 126 wRC+ (with 9 HRs) going to left field, so it’s not like they’re bad at it. It’s just Death Valley out there in LF for them at OPACY.  How long will it be until these LH guys just start going full pull-happy? Essentially, the opposite of what’s happened with Mountcastle. When (a) your team’s philosophy is to focus on doing damage and (b) you can’t DO damage to the opposite field — the rational endpoint is just to try to pull everything. I don’t think that’s a good outcome. I think it makes them much worse hitters in the other 81 games, and I think it’s a terrible waste of a bunch of really talented hitters with all-field abilities.

    • The entire commentary on Hyde and the team seems odd but have to admit there does seem to be something off.   Team seemed adrift for most of the 2nd half.  A very talented team went off the rails midway through the season mostly due to core players struggling and rookies not performing or filling in adequately for a few injured starters.    None of the position player trade line acquisitions performed that well.     Hyde seemed in over his head or at a loss on how to correct things, but he must have convinced Elias that he has a plan to fix things.  Curious to see what happens with the coaching staff.  
    • And or give up picks for QO pitchers 
    • They've averaged 92 wins a year the last 3 years in the most difficult environment in the sport with basically the greatest disadvantages in the sport. Something tells me they know a hell of a lot more about this than you do.    
    • Not when they aren't worthy. At minimum the hitting coaches should be el gonezo
    • That is the sign of a stable and successful organization.  Firing people.  Who could argue that?
