Duquette Speaks

DAN DUQUETTE:o I don't like to give up draft picks, but we need to have pitchers to be strong for today. I don't like giving up the draft pick UNLESS all of other options are gone away, and right about now, we are almost at that point.

This doesn't inspire.

When Dan says things like "a 13 game winner would help our club", do you think he really considers pitching wins? Another example is citing Kim's career .320 average. Is that him trying to be relatable, perhaps thinking the average person listening understands that a little better? Sometimes I honestly wonder. I really like Dan and part of the reason I do is because some of the things he says sound so ridiculous, lol. I can never decide if he's secretly a big stat guy, or if he really is just a pure executive who relies on a team of people to get him the info before he makes the call.

The latter.

I certainly would not presume that Duquette is not aware (for example) that Felix Hernandez won a Cy Young Award with a 13-12 W-L record.

I think Dan is quite stat-savvy. He often cites both "old school stats" like wins in one breath, and then some sabermetric stat in the next. And almost by definition, he's correct that a 13-game winner would help our club. We didn't have a single starter win 13 games last year. Of course, if the team goes 13-20 in his starts, that won't be helpful. But these days, if a starter wins 13 games, chances are good that the team was over .500 in his starts. (The Rangers were 19-14 when Gallardo started last year).

I think this is quite accurate.

Much appreciated if somebody would give Frank a greenie for me.

I'm all out until tomorrow.

The Orioles are very clear. Don't negotiate if you are requiring an opt out.

As I said earlier in the offseason, I'd be more flexible, depending on when in the contract the opt-out occurs, the age of the player, the price of the deal and the extent to which it is back-loaded. If Manny is insisting on an opt-out, I wouldn't refuse to consider it, I'd just want some concessions on the other issues in exchange.

"Were are gonna take a look at someone with a good On Base percentage that we can put at the top of the lineup. We have a lot of sluggers."

"There's some decent outfielders available as free agents, there are quite a few outfielders available on the trade market by the way. Trumbo has a good bat, I think we will see him at DH a lot this season."

"They measure exit velocity, Trumbo is one of the top ten in the MLB. He also is near the top in distance of his home runs. Trumbo is good at first base. Chris Davis is willing to play wherever Buck thinks that he will be an asset. I don't know that that is something that the club wants to do right now."

"Parker Bridwell has a new pitch that he picked up out there in California this off-season. It's an overhead curve. He's got a good live arm."

Bridwell has ALWAYS intriqued (teased) me. Ever since we drafted him (overslot I believe), and he exhibited great velo with a very pitchable frame, I've always followed him. He's had some incredible, "everything is working," starts at Bowie with 9+ K's. If he can ever fully get it together, he would add some very well needed depth to the rotation. I know many see his future in the bullpen but it sure would be great if he could become a solid to above average starter.
