The Case for P. Alvarez

Lol, and Earl also dug the long ball. Pitching, defense and the 3 run HR. We have the defense, adding Alvarez puts us over the top on the long ball. Can we get the pitching? These guys are not Palmer, McNally, Cuellar and company are they?
3R HR are great, but in order to have them, you have to have 2 men on base. We currently have maybe 3 who can do that with any regularity.

If Trumbo goes down, sure. But he's redundant because of Chris Davis (lots of K's and HRs) and Mark Trumbo (Alvarez' optimum position at DH and nowhere near a glove).

Reimold and Rickard are redundant. Trumbo and Alvarez are redundant. Would you rather have the extra one of Reimold/Rickard or Alvarez if an injury suddenly makes them not redundant?

I do not know much about Alvarez's personality, but I wonder how he would adjust from being a guy who plays most of the time to a guy who plays about half the time. In a vacuum, if you could get 90% of his PA vs. RHP, he seems like he'd be highly effective, but I'm not sure he'd cotton to it in reality.

I missed this earlier - this is a good point. I'm sure he's not going to be happy transitioning to a part-time player, and it could hurt his performance. But the reality is, he's not going to have an opportunity to play full time in the major leagues without an injury and a team getting desperate. I did the AL DH/1B earlier. For completeness, I'll do the NL 1B, who'd have to be able to play the OF for Alvarez to get ABs:

ATL: Freeman. No fit.

MIA: Bour. Also, a very full OF. No fit.

NYM: Duda. No fit.

PHI: Howard. I suppose they could just cut Howard and sign Alvarez? Unlikely.

WAS: Zimmerman. I'm sure WAS would like a backup but that's still a bad scenario for Alvarez's playing time. No fit.

CHC: Rizzo. No fit.

CIN: Votto. No fit.

MIL: Carter. Would be a hilarious combo. Not a bad platoon either. Still, probably unlikely.

PIT: Jaso. No fit.

STL: Moss and Adams already around. No fit.

ARI: Goldschmidt. No fit.

COL: Paulsen/Reynolds. Probably Alvarez's best shot. Dunno how committed they are to Paulsen. He's not very good, but he has lots of team control left. Likely best fit.

LAD: A-Gon. No fit.

SD: Myers. He could definitely be playing OF part time. They've got Jay, Upton, Kemp in the OF. Maybe something there.

SF: Belt. He plays the OF, but only to accommodate Posey. They've also got a full OF with Pence, Span, Pagan, Blanco. No fit.

If I had to guess, Boras is engaging BAL, CLE, HOU, SD, COL, and MIL, trying to get the most money. Playing time would be better with the NL teams as a 1B, but given his absolute butcher job as a fielder the last two years, he may not even be worth the headache for those teams. They might not even take him for the league minimum - he has been replacement level by fWAR the last two years. The fact that he's gone this long unsigned, with absolutely zero rumors from NL teams, tells me that those teams have very little interest in him, no matter the price. In that case, he's going to fall right into our laps, because the opportunity here is better than in CLE and HOU, even as a bench player.

Reimold/Rickard. Alvarez' agent is Scott Boras, and he won't settle for more than 2 years.

But how do we get Trumbo the playing time? My biggest question with this.

If they sign Fowler I think it would be hard to carry Alvarez.

Your bench would be Alvarez, Rickard, Flaherty, and Joseph?

One injury would derail everything....in game switches would be hard due to little flexibility.

There's just really no need for Alvarez. It's getting him just because he's there, rather than we have a big need. And it would require more machinations in terms of the lineup that also aren't necessary. I'm perfectly content to punt on Alvarez. Maybe if we didn't already get Trumbo, I might be more interested.

If the Orioles sign Fowler, Alvarez would almost certainly not want to sign where he won't get enough at bats to put up a season that could net him a good contract next year. The Orioles wouldn't be all that interested, either, IMO, since they really wouldn't have a need for him. I don't see either party being attracted to a deal if Fowler signs with Baltimore.

If trumbo, davis, aj, manny, Kim, or fowler get a major injury ie 60 day dl worthy), bring pedro in if he is available. Otherwise, save the roster spot.

Kim should get a long leash this year. The upside is there. Give the man a chance to acclimate to US baseball. Dont want him to be pressing if he is worried about losing his job to pedro alvarez (well it would really be trumbo/davis directly replacing him with pedro dhing.

They could play Trumbo at LF or RF, make Kim the fourth OF and have Alvarez platoon at DH with Reimold or Dariel Alvarez. But yes, I really don't see the need for him. I would much rather have them take a flyer on another pitcher.

Why would you make your worst of the three outfielders (Trumbo) play the outfield, while Reimold or Dariel Alvarez DH? Why would you sign Alvarez to platoon at DH if you were already relegating Kim to the bench? There's a reasonable chance Kim is a better hitter than Alvarez.

If I were Pedro Alvarez I'd probably just wait around until someone has an injury in spring training and sign with them. That's probably better than signing a one-year deal with the Orioles to maybe be a platoon DH. And if I'm the Orioles and I look at the current roster I'm struggling to find a place for a platoon DH.

    • Vlad Jr and Burnes....my priorities. Then you can trade Mayo for MMiller.
    • I'm certainly not "fixated" on this. The real issue is the budget. How high will Rubenstein be willing to grow the payroll?
    • It will be retired with the first big $$ free agent or extension signed under Rubenstein.
    • I have no idea what you are arguing.
    • Cool, nice work there.   So? Are we owed a large market? Does DC not deserve their own team? Should the fans of Baltimore just become Redskins fans and not tried to get their own team when the Colts left?  (sorry to bring up football again but come on, that fits). I laid it all out a couple months ago, MLB has more teams bringing home the hunk of metal than other sports since 2000.  The competitive balance is fine.  It's harder?  Yea?  OK it's harder.
    • The Cowboys have an owner with deep pockets. I agree 100% … There is some cap manipulation that happens. At the end of the day they have a $255 million limit they are required to operate under. The Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox, etc can decide each year how much they want to add to the luxury tax fund as opposed to not being able to fit a potential move under the cap. Here are the 2024 payrolls for the NFL and MLB   https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2024/04/03/mlb-team-payrolls-2024-highest-lowest-mets/73139425007/ Highest $305 million vs $60 million  https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/cap/_/year/2024/sort/cap_maximum_space Highest $259.5 million vs $217 million these numbers will likely get tighter once they make additions before the trade deadline.  If you can’t see the difference I’m just wasting my time. The biggest driving force in MLB beyond the ability of some to spend lavishly is the tv markets. The club controls so much of their tv revenue that it’s an unfair game. The moved that created the Orioles didn’t have much of an effect on the Senators tv market which was likely nonexistent then. Plus MLB is allowing contract manipulation like Othani’s contract. Instead of $700 divided by length 10 years, Somehow he only counts as like $46 million which is laughable. Plus they are paying $85 million in luxury tax fees in 2024.    The Orioles were a large market team when the Expos moved to DC. They could afford to spend with the Yankees, Red Sox , and Blue Jays. Could the Orioles afford to pay $85 million in luxury tax fees? Could the Yankees? I know the answer to both.  What grounds ? Who cares ? The impact was astronomical …It made it very difficult to compete in the AL East without tank a thon! It split their tv market in half. Obviously MLB papered over that long enough to get an agreement done.    They turned a large market team into 2 small/mid market teams. The Orioles and Nationals payrolls combined place them only 11th in baseball. Obviously they could afford to spend more. But it’s doubtful either will ever be top 10 for more than a season  or two as they try to hang onto a window.
