Marlins' Bryan Morris: Opts for back surgery

by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Morris has opted to undergo surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

Morris has been mulling the decision for the last few days, and he'll opt to finally undergo the procedure, noting that his back has bothered him for the last two years. The expectation is that the surgery will end his 2016 season, though manager Don Mattingly said Tuesday that there's a slight chance Morris could return near the end of the season.

Indians' Marlon Byrd: Suspended 162 games

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Byrd has been suspended 162 games for PED use, Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports.

Byrd was having a solid season offensively, hitting .270 with five home runs and 19 RBI through 34 games prior to the suspension. However, the 38-year-old will now be forced to sit out a full season after testing positive for PEDs. With Byrd turning 39 in August, it is unknown whether he will try to return to baseball next season or call it a career, but more information regarding his future should come to light in the weeks and months ahead.

So much for this off season option. This is a tough blow for the Indians as Byrd was producing. Now we know why, at such an advanced age.

Yankees' Mark Teixeira: Goes on 15-day disabled list

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Teixeira was placed on the 15-day DL on Saturday with a right knee articular cartilage tear.

Teixeira left Friday's game against the Orioles after appearing to injure his knee during his first at-bat of the contest. He was replaced by Rob Refsnyder, but with Dustin Ackley recently sidelined for the rest of the year with a torn labrum, the Yankees will have to figure out a solution at first base. The team recalled first baseman Chris Parmelee from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but could either give Refsnyder a shot at the job or put Austin Romine/Brian McCann at first when they are not behind the plate.

He's only on the 15-day DL for now, but I can't imagine him coming back with a cartilage tear. He should start thinking about hanging 'em up as you don't imagine him being much of a free agent at the end of the year.

Giants' Hunter Pence: Will go under the knife Thursday

by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Pence will undergo hamstring surgery Thursday, Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area reports.

It was a matter of "when," not "if," regarding Pence's surgery, and now the team has set a concrete date. The expected procedure carries a recovery timetable of approximately two months, so the Giants are optimistic they'll get their outfielder back before the end of the season. In the meantime, Pence is a likely candidate to hit the 60-day DL if the need for a 40-man roster spot arises.

Enormous hit to the Giants offense. You wonder if they'll be in the market for a replacement OF. Ryan Braun?

Mets' David Wright: Out at least 6-to-8 weeks

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

The Mets placed Wright (neck) on the disabled list Friday and announced he will rest for 6-8 weeks before resuming baseball activities, Adam Rubin of ESPN.com reports.

It was reported earlier Friday that Wright would be sidelined for at least a month, but the latest update -- which comes straight from the team -- all but rules him out for at least two months, as Wright will need to get back into playing shape once his neck injury has subsided. The best-case scenario has Wright returning to action sometime in early August, but it's certainly possible he could be out several weeks beyond that. The Mets will fill Wright's spot with the combination of Wilmer Flores, Ty Kelly, and Matt Reynolds for now, but it remains to be seen how things will shake out at the hot corner long term.

Notice how many of these names already have a track record of long injury. This guy may never be able to keep it together again.

Rays' Ryan Brett: Will miss rest of season

by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Brett will miss the 2016 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in mid-May, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Although the team didn't announce it initially, Brett will indeed be out for the year after beginning it on the DL with a wrist strain. The 24-year-old was assigned to Triple-A Durham following a tough spring in which he went 0-for-11 but didn't have a chance to play before he was once again hampered by injury. Brett's immediate timetable for return will be spring training, but given the severity of this injury, there's no guarantee he will be ready.
