Sean Berry knows hitting.

When he was a slugging corner infielder for five major league teams over 11 seasons, Berry hit .272 with 81 home runs and 369 RBIs. For three years with the Houston Astros in the 1990s, Berry ? the Norfolk Tides? hitting coach the past two seasons ? was one of the original ?Killer B?s? alongside Craig Biggio, Jeff Bagwell and Derek Bell.

In 1996, his most productive season, Berry hit .281 with 17 homers, 38 doubles and 95 RBIs in 130 games. Twenty years later, after spending four seasons as the Astros? hitting coach, he?s trying to impart what he?s learned in more than 30 years in pro ball to Norfolk?s struggling hitters.

?We were kind of laughing at how we were going to be sore the next day,? Berry said. ?Well, I was a little bit more than sore.?

During that night?s game, Berry retreated to the clubhouse restroom. He noticed a considerable amount of blood in his urine.

Figuring he must have jarred something during the BP session, Berry went back to the bench, still, oddly, pain-free. He later called his sister, who?s a doctor, and described his symptoms. Without pain, it didn?t add up.

The next day, it started to add up. Berry felt tremendous back pain and went to the Braves? team doctor, who suggested he might have kidney stones.

Berry took some painkillers and stayed with the Astros until they returned to Houston a few days later. He went straight to his doctor, who ordered a CT scan.

?You don?t have any kidney stones at all,? he was told as the doctor pointed to Berry?s kidney on an image. ?But you see that right there??

?Yep,? Berry said.

?That?s a tumor, and that?s cancer.?
