Trey is an absolute beast. I saw him with the Keys in Myrtle Beach and he was a man among boys then. He hit one of the longest and hardest home runs I have ever seen that night. Go Trey!!

Trey is a beast. I think he can be Paul Goldschmidt like at the uppermost of his ceiling.

If Mancini can turn into a productive everyday major leaguer I will be happy enough.

I don't think we've seen anything to indicate that he has Paul Goldschmidt upside. Other than both being unheralded draft picks, I don't see a lot of similarities.

Love this from Trey...post game story about his Grandpa...?It was a really special moment,? Mancini said. ?Something I?ve definitely been waiting for my whole life. It was especially cool for my family. I didn?t say this before the game, but my grandfather was a 20-year season ticket holder here for the Orioles. Today would have been his 79th birthday. He passed away four years ago. I just found out recently that today would have been his birthday. So that is a big reason why this is special and part of the reason my Mom (Beth) was so pumped up out there too.?

Probably not, but here is one discussion about that comp..

Mancini returned to High-A to open 2015 and exploded, hitting .313/.341/.527 in 207 at-bats, wRC+ 150. Promoted to Double-A Bowie, he got even hotter in the second half, batting .359/.400/.586 in 326 at-bats, his wRC+ an incredible 180. Overall he hit .341/.375/.563 with 43 doubles, 21 homers, 31 walks and 93 strikeouts in 533 at-bats.

Whoa. Now that Goldschmidt thing doesn't look so dumb. Goldy's wRC+ in his first season in Double-A was 178.

Mancini has made significant changes in stance and swing after his draft and is continuing to improve. Who knows how far exactly that will go.

I've always thought that Trey looks like a really good player. He was good in Norfolk where a lot of offensive players go to die.

I think much like trumbo, a lot of his long outs (especially in Norfolk) are home runs in Baltimore.

I'd give anything to have a redo on this past off season and force Dan to let Davis go, have Mancini playing 1st and use the 160 million on other resources. Then you could also have trumbo as a full time DH, pay the extra for fowler, maybe not sign gallardo and get a better pitcher.........

But none of that happened and instead it appears we've squandered another season signing mediocre players and wasting draft picks and trading prospects for non impact players.

Ugh.

Most of Trumbos Camden Yard homers would have been Jumbos in 20 other parks.'

I'm going to temper my enthusiasm, though he definitely showed he has some power -- that ball was crushed. Still, his OPS was only about 20 points above Christian Walker's. I'm thinking he's a .750ish OPS guy as a major leaguer who is mostly going to DH.

The one difference is plate discipline, and that's kind of a big deal.

    • We played all our Saturday games at home at 4pm. That should help us.  I don’t know if that was the full reason we made the switch this year, but it had to factor in. We didn’t do so well in the day games last year in the playoffs.  Also, don’t be surprised to see McCann get a big hit in game 1 and possibly just start this entire series versus the speedster Royals.  Let’s go. We owe these “guys” big time paybacks even if it’s 10 years later.
    • They also smacked him around for 7 ER on 9 H in 1.2 innings. He can be beaten, though he certainly had a great September.
    • I understand why posters would want to avoid Skubal in a game 1, but the Royals starters are not going to be a cakewalk. Probably a deeper starting staff with Ragans, Lugo and Wacha.
    • Interesting article …. Pretty surprising stat with all the guys that we lost to injury       https://www.masnsports.com/blog/orioles-made-it-through-rough-t
    • The same thing was happening was MacDonald was the DC and when Wink was the DC, that makes me put most of the blame on Harbaugh
    • dWAR is just the run value for defense added with the defensive adjustment.  Corner OF spots have a -7.5 run adjustment, while CF has a +2.5 adjustment over 150 games.    Since Cowser played both CF and the corners they pro-rate his time at each to calculate his defensive adjustment.
    • Just to be clear, though, fWAR also includes a substantial adjustment for position, including a negative one for Cowser.  For a clearer example on that front, as the chart posted higher on this page indicates, Carlos Santana had a +14 OAA — which is the source data that fWAR’s defensive component is based on. That 14 outs above average equates to 11-12 (they use different values on this for some reason) runs better than the average 1B.  So does Santana have a 12.0 defensive value, per fWAR? He does not. That’s because they adjust his defensive value downward to reflect that he’s playing a less difficult/valuable position. In this case, that adjustment comes out to -11.0 runs, as you can see here:   So despite apparently having a bona fide Gold Glove season, Santana’s Fielding Runs value (FanGraphs’ equivalent to dWAR) is barely above average, at 1.1 runs.    Any good WAR calculation is going to adjust for position. Being a good 1B just isn’t worth as much as being an average SS or catcher. Just as being a good LF isn’t worth as much as being an average CF. Every outfielder can play LF — only the best outfielders can play CF.  Where the nuance/context shows up here is with Cowser’s unique situation. Playing LF in OPACY, with all that ground to cover, is not the same as playing LF at Fenway or Yankee Stadium. Treating Cowser’s “position” as equivalent to Tyler O’Neill’s, for example, is not fair. The degree of difficulty is much, much higher at OPACY’s LF, and so the adjustment seems out of whack for him. That’s the one place where I’d say the bWAR value is “unfair” to Cowser.
