By rWAR:

Hoiles 23.4 (10 seasons)

Dempsey 21.3 (12 seasons)

Wieters 16.3 (8 seasons)

Nobody else over 10 rWAR.

I think MW is the best overall catcher ever to play for the Orioles.

I love Hoiles, who was more a offensive threat and not as good defensively.

Dempster had a great 83 WS and is a personal favorite of mine

It took me a while to get over the lofty expectations, but once I did it was easy to see we had a really good player who brought a ton of intangibles to the team.  He was tough and didn't complain about his heavy workload.  He played the game the right way.  He competed.

I always thought his swing was a little weird - he had a funny way of imparting topspin on the ball so I always thought that sapped his power numbers.

I was pretty devastated for him when he had to get Tommy John - proof to me that the O's were snakebitten.  He came back strong and helped us get to the playoffs again.  Godspeed, Matt, it was a pleasure to watch you.

Ill miss him as a solid person and "strong silent type". He seemed like he had no ego and he was a decent defender and occasional clutch hitter I think we will miss him too with our catching core right now down to Castillo (assuming he signs) , Joseph, and maybe, down the road Cisco. But the fact is, Matt wasnt worth 17 mil(QO) and certainly wasnt worth 16 mil last year. Too bad, in another era, he mightve been our Bill Freehan. He wasnt as good as Freehan, but he would have been a good Oriole lifer.

Nice post.

I think what will also be lost, is the MW factor in the clubhouse and how the younger guys looked up to him, and MW was willing to share his knowledge and help them in anyway that he could.

Bill Freehan has kind of gotten lost in the mists of time.     He had a 44.7 rWAR career, which puts him at the level of Matt Holliday.    Not quite a Hall of Famer, but in the Hall of the Very Good.

Matt has been my favorite player from Day 1. As a fellow Yellow Jacket, I loved watching him play in college, including his stint at the closer his freshman year in addition to catcher, and was stoked when he was drafted by the Orioles. I sweated out the signing deadline big time. We could certainly use another Wieters or Varitek or Garciaparra at Georgia Tech. I do think he was a valuable contributor to the Orioles, more so than many acknowledge, and I know for certain he has always represented the Orioles with class. I hope he lands in a good situation and would love to see him with the Braves. I know he will be missed in the clubhouse and in the community as well as on the field.

The combination of Matt really needing to get a multi-year deal and my belief that the Orioles feel that Sisco will be an everyday catcher by 2018 at the latest made this parting likely inevitable. Depending on how things go, we may see him in orange and black sometime down the road. Good luck to Matt (against everyone except the Orioles) and thanks for some great memories!

Even after he couldn't block the plate, his reach on sweep tags gave him a big edge on most catchers.   He also rarely dropped a short-hop throw.   He was also excellent at catching foul tips, an underrated skill.

The bold part very much -- exceptional at this!

I just want to say....

what the hell am I gonna do with my #32 Jersey now????

damnit!!!

I understand the financial aspect of this decision, and don't let me get in the way of his ability to get what he deserves, but sometimes... this game is truly F***ed.

I'm selling mine and getting a Davis or Mancini one

Using ***** as a way to cuss on the board is against the rules. I'm surprised this post hasn't been flagged yet.

i do agree that the financial part of baseball stinks and there is no solution in sight

    • Only ones I’d look to extend now are Gunnar, and maybe Holliday or Basallo. Premium defensive positions and young enough to not worry about going past their primes. Westburg would need to be a team friendly deal as he’s older and I wonder if we’re getting his best years now.
    • I've never played in a beer league software league.  Is it drunk programming?  Sounds fun. Don't a lot of beer leagues limit the amount of Homeruns you can hit? With the way pitching and defense is currently don't all team struggle to score when they don't hit HR?  Seven players hit .300.  It's pretty hard to string together three hits in an inning with what pitching looks like these days.
    • Gunnar is the only one you worry about. I would still sign Holliday as well but I think Gunnar is the bigger fish to fry. I no longer would consider an extension for Adley. I would wait on anyone else.
    • Something that doesn't show up on the stat sheet is something like being able to hit behind the runner to advance him.   The O's have been successful in building an analytics offense.   Focus on hitting homeruns, develop a swing to achieve optimum launch angle and exit velocity to hit the ball over the fence.  Result is they have a team of beer league software players and not baseball players and struggle to score when not hitting homeruns.   Analytically, if you review their offensive rankings for the season, it says, nothing wrong with the offense, at least from a macro review, but we all know that this offense has issues.   Runs - 4th Home runs - 3rd AVG - 7th OBP - 11th SLG - 3rd OPS - 4th  K's - 18th (this was interesting to see considering how much they seem to strikeout) All of the above looks good, nothing to fix. The O's had 6 sacrifice hits for the season, ranking 30th.  Interestingly, Arizona who led the league in runs scored also led the league in sacrifice hits with 34.   The O's do not need to necessarily to focus on small ball, but they do need to be able to add that skillset to their offensive arsenal.
    • Sounds like Buck. Anything to get a slight advantage. It’s something this team sorely misses.
    • Detroit has been so much fun to watch. They have Skubal and literally 11 completely interchangeable pitchers who Hinch uses at any time and in any situation. They all can start games, throw in middle relief, and close. Every Tigers pitcher has to be ready to come in at any time because nobody other than Skubal actually has a defined role, which can certainly help keep them focused.  That guy Holton who started Game 1 in Cleveland closed Game 3 yesterday.  Of course he did! And Hinch seems to have complete faith in everybody, which I guess works since they all seem to have rubber arms and never get tired. It must be so annoying as an opposing manager to try and game plan against them or to be a hitter and have absolutely no idea who you are going to be facing until you actually walk up to the plate.  Not sure how long this "gimmick" will last, but it has been really enjoyable.
    • So if Westburg ends up being a very good but not MVP level player you aren't interesting in extending him at a team friendly rate? I disagree with your strategy. If you can lock up even a young 3 win player at a team friendly rate I say do it.
