2017 starting pitcher spring game log

It's always interesting to see how our starters are progressing as spring training proceeds.   I'll update this as spring proceeds.   Road games are marked with an asterisk, since those are usually the tougher opposing lineups.

Tyler Wilson

2/24 -- 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K*

3/02 -- 3.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 K's*

Gabriel Ynoa

2/25 -- 2.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 0 BB, 1 K*

3/01 -- 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 K's (relief appearance)

Wade Miley

2/26 -- 2.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 K

3/03 -- 1.0 IP, 4 R, 3 ER, 5 H, 1 BB, 1 K*

Ubaldo Jimenez

2/27 -- 2.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 0 BB, 0 K's

3/04 -- 3.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 1 BB, 1 K*

Mike Wright

2/28 -- 2.0 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 K

3/05 -- 3.0 IP, 1, R, 1 ER, 2 K, 0 BB, 3 K's

Dylan Bundy

3/01 -- 2.0 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 0 BB, 2 K's

3/06 -- 3.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 0 BB, 3 K's*

Kevin Gausman

3/02 -- 2.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 K's

A couple of things are notable to date.    So far, the starter has managed to get through his scheduled number of innings without bumping into his pitch limit in 11 of 12 games.   The lone exception was Wade Miley, who got hit very hard in his second start.    Second, the starters have only walked 2 batters in 27 innings.     Overall, despite Tillman's absence, it's been a smooth opening to spring training for the starters compared to most seasons I can remember.

So far so good, mostly. Also worth mentioning is that (correct me if I'm wrong) Aquino went 3 innings his last time out. Looks like he'll be slated a starting role at AAA perhaps? Worth keeping an eye on though because as a lefty, he could challenge Miley if they continue to stretch him out.

Yes, you could argue for adding Aquino to the list.    For now, I'm just going to list pitchers who have actually started a game this spring.    If other pitchers get a start as things progress, I probably will add them and may include their prior relief appearances as well.

Miley and Jimenez start the season in the rotation unless they are hurt.  Can't pay these guys what they are getting and not give them a chance when the bell rings.

3/21 -- 2.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 1 K

I haven't included Nuno's one emergency start, and I haven't gone back to find all of Lee's relief appearances.

Overall, there isn't much to be excited about here, except for Gausman.    Guys have been reaching their pitch count limits before they reach their innings limit consistently over the last 2+ weeks.    Gausman is the only starter who has made it through five innings.   I hope things will come into focus a bit more in the upcoming week, though it may be harder to tell since Buck apparently is sending Gausman and Bundy over to Twin Lakes today.

We'll have to carry an extra arm even without the need for a 5th starter. Starters incapable of putting up an average amount of innings

Another year, same story. Bad starting pitching.... bad OF defense... bad team speed

I'm still waiting to see who makes the 25-man roster before reaching conclusions about the OF defense and team speed.   I think the OF defense is pretty likely to be improved, unless Pedro Alvarez is on the 25-man roster.    Smith is better than Trumbo and the other 5th OFer options are better than Reimold.

Perhaps slightly improved... but still below average

and I suspect we are going to see a lot of Trumbo in RF and Pedro at DH

So many bad contracts

DH: Mancini/Alvarez @ 2.5 Million >>>>>> Trumbo @ 13 million

13 million is nothing considering you have LOOGY's getting 7 million a year.  Contracts are going up.  It's not my money.  I'd rather have Trumbo than Mancini/Alvarez.

Anyway you can accumulate all the stats for each starter together?

Do you just mean their overall spring stats? I left out some of Lee's relief appearances, Nuno's emergency start, and Aquino's start (since he only started once).   I think Ubaldo made a MiL start on the 26th, but I can't find any reports on his line that day.

    • Not that I am in any way full agreement, but this is a classic post.  Doesn't Machado play chess?  Maybe we could get some chess boards in the clubhouse and junk all the legos.  Not all great baseball men are John McGraw bad asses.  Some can be Christy Mathewsons as well, I suppose.  Not that I imagine today's young players much resembling McGraw or Mathewson, but they are the first two contrasting old school types that come to mind.  I will say just based on his postseason alone I'd much rather have Tatis over Machado.
    • Well I refuse to believe that only the O's have no players that want extensions.
    • Customer advocate groups have tried for decades to force the cable companies to allow channel by channel (a la carte) subscriptions, but the cable companies fought this because it would result in far less revenue (than forcing us to pay for a hundred channels we don't watch).  The government refused to intervene, so we've been stuck with the existing business model for all this time.  Streaming is forcing the change because streaming -- for now -- is an a la carte model.   MLB's fear must be this: if the regional sports network cable channel model goes away, will most users pay anywhere close to what these channels made as part of a cable bundle for just one streaming channel where all you watch are Orioles games (or maybe Orioles and Nats games -- whatever the case may be)?  So if you pay $100/month for cable with MASN, you are probably watching at least a few other channels too.  But will you pay $15/month (or whatever the price may be) just to watch the Orioles -- even during the months when there is no baseball?  The existing basic cable model has been quite stable because people tend to watch at least 5 or 6 channels.  They're reluctant to cancel their whole cable package just because baseball season is over -- or they've been too busy to watch many games this season.  But with a single streaming channel of just baseball there is bound to be a far more unstable revenue base.  All the streaming channels are already dealing with this problem.  I think MLB is maybe reluctant to go all in on streaming for this reason.  Perhaps they're looking for new different model that could allow them to bundle individual team channels with Netflix, or Prime, or maybe with your cell phone plan or something else.  This could give them some stability, but it could also be a turn off for the more hardcore fans who just want the Orioles and little else.  It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out and if MLB, and the Orioles, will prosper or suffer as a result.
    • What if they don’t want to be extended?
    • I don't want the O's to lose much, but I do want there to be a massive streaming deal with Amazon or some other company the O's are left out of.  This blackout nonsense is bullsh!t. 🤬
