As season looms, Orioles fans balk over streaming blackout

I think someone else mentioned this in a prior thread.

till, by the time the season opens on April 2, fans of just three of the 30 teams — the Orioles, Nationals and Los Angeles Dodgers — will remain subject to the in-market streaming restrictions.

Other teams have embraced or at least accepted live-streaming their games locally, an important tool for generating increased interest to secure baseball's future. More consumers, especially younger ones, now stream their entertainment, including sports, on their phones or other devices than watch it on television, according to the Consumer Technology Association.

In January, NBC Sports Regional Networks announced an agreement to stream in-market games for subscribers of its CSN regional networks showing the Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants. Terms were not disclosed.

"I would expect that the others would fall into line," said John Mansell, a sports and media consultant based in Northern Virginia.

But no deal has yet been struck with MASN, which is shared by the Orioles and Nationals. Dodgers' fans are in the same situation.

Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred has said the goal is for all 30 teams to have their games streamed in their home markets.

"There are ongoing conversations in an effort to make sure fans of all teams will have access to in-market streaming as part of the commisioner's directive," said a spokesperson for MLB Advanced Media, a company created by league officials in 2000 so its streaming and other online activities could be under one roof.

The Orioles and MASN declined comment because the discussions are continuing.

This was especially frustrating when I used to live in North Carolina, which is included in the Baltimore/Washington blackout zone but where Time Warner usually doesn't carry MASN. There's basically no non-bootlegged way to watch the Orioles games there.

Seems to me to be a non issue as you have to have a cable subscription to stream in market games for other teams.

True, but at least you can borrow a friend or relative's cable sign in.   The most beneficial option for cord cutters would be getting on one of the Sling, Vue, Directv Now services, where MASN is also one of the only RSN's not carried.

    • Funny thing is, if the O's win, I'm generally so psyched on my way out that I don't even notice all of these annoyances. I'm just happy that the team won. That was my experience a lot this year when the team was doing well. Unfortunately about half of my 13 game season ticket plan was in August and September, plus I got to watch one of the pathetic WC games. You can smooth over a fair bit of fan annoyance with winning, but at the end of the day, someone has to care about the little things and actually invest money to make them better. There's no longer any question about whether the O's will be here to stay. The government and the team are aligned: OPACY and the Orioles are here, and we're going to make the best of what we have, and make it a centerpiece of Baltimore. That's great. But now they have to put their money where their mouths are. Show fans from all walks of life that we are able to reimagine OPACY and the surrounding area in the image of an efficient, clean, 21st century facility, starting with things as basic as infrastructure and plumbing, and ranging as far as parking, public trans, and food at the park. Honestly? I sort-of understood why they weren't investing in anything in the years when (1) the team was bad, and (2) ownership wasn't invested in the team, and (3) the renewal of the lease with the Maryland Stadium Authority was in doubt. The vast majority of points (1), (2) and (3) above are now non-issues, or have been majorly mitigated in the past 2 years. So it's time to make things right. Otherwise why bother with the long-term commitment at all, if you're just going to let the project languish?

    • I still think Soto (Juan, not any of the others) checks off all the boxes here.  Insanely productive, plays hard, can rub opponents the wrong way on the field but is generally liked off of it.
    • We're not a mid-market team. Small market for sure.
    • Things looking bleak for KC. They left 11 runners on base, got a taste of their own medicine, I guess.
