The Orioles TWENTY SEVENTH rated prospect on the MLB Orioles site with the following write up:

Scouts were divided over Cleavinger's future role heading in the 2015 Draft, with some viewing the Oregon closer as a potential late-inning reliever with a power arm and others seeing him as a lefty specialist with poor command and less-than-explosive stuff. The Orioles made Cleavinger their third-round selection, and he rewarded the organization in 2016 by reaching Class A Advanced Frederick after an All-Star campaign with Class A Delmarva. The move up to Double-A proved to be a challenge for Cleavinger, who struggled to throw strikes while missing fewer bats.

A stocky left-hander, Cleavinger's fastball will touch 96 mph but typically sits in the 89-92 mph range. His curveball plays as average, registering in the low 70s with good shape and depth, though at times he struggles to get on top of it. The pairing helped Cleavinger pile up 102 strikeouts in 76 1/3 innings in 2016, although his control regressed with the move up to the Carolina League. Meanwhile, the development of a usable changeup should help Cleavinger avoid being relegated to a LOOGY.

Cleavinger's deceptive delivery and the fact that he hides the ball well makes his stuff play up and makes him naturally tough to barrel. That being said, the effort in the delivery does raise questions about his overall strike-throwing ability. The Orioles considered developing Cleavinger as a starter in 2016 but ultimately decided to keep him in the bullpen, where his two average-or-better pitches and deception give him greater impact potential.

This trade is horrible. Cleavinger has been one of the good Bowie bullpen pieces with Tim Berry and should have been high on the list for a Baltimore bullpen spot next season out of Spring Training.

Now the question is, what roster player is going bye bye?

I'm going to guess Kim. He's most hated by Buck.

Hellickson has one of worst FIP and THE WORST xFIP of all qualifiers. 5K/9, gopher ball specialist. 1.76 HR/9IP.  I wouldn't take him on for free. Help me see the hidden genius here. This is the bad old days...

We will not miss Cleavinger. It's an okay deal for the rest of the season. if he pitches well  for us hopefully we can sign him to a new contract. He's only 30 years old. Apparently Kim is included in the deal and money is coming back. Rosenthal says they are still trying to trade Brach and Britton. Ramos was traded by the Marlins tonight to the Mets. One less reliever left.

Owed $6M. What a waste. Hopefully we didn't give up anyone else, but I don't like throwing $6M down the toilet for a lost season. At least we won't have to watch one of Ubaldo or Miley.

If the Orioles added Hellickson because they want to shut down Dylan Bundy early and protect his arm, I could live with the move. That's pretty much the only valid excuse for this trade happening though.

We shouldn't be trading anything at all for Hellickson, he's terrible.

We need pitching and Hellickson is better than what we are running out there every night.  Gausman when he is on is the exception.  Bundy appears to be tired. Tillman should be shut down.  What a wasted season by him. He should be embarrassed to take his check along with Ubaldo and Miley. Stealing money from the team. Oh and O'Day ! What a waste! Hellickson came up through the Tampa system so he has an edge already.

    • ???. Cowser took more swings against LF than any other LH hitter on the team ( not named  Henderson). He was one of the guys they did not platoon.
    • I think Kevin Seiyltzer was the fall guy for a team that thought they were a championship team.  This guy has overseen more a decade of hitting in Atlanta, has been through developing and helping young batters succeed when the league adjusts.  Most importantly, he has a ring!
    • Glad one poseur AL team is out.  I hope CLE wins and knocks the other one out tomorrow.
    • I honestly think there is very little difference in most the teams that made the playoffs.  The most wins was 98 wins and there was 12 teams with 86 wins or more.  It also seems that many of the teams are on the same page with scouting and analytics now hitting wise.  Years back you had moneyball which the A’s used before anyone else.  Then the Astros and few teams started with analytics and seemed to be ahead of the rest of the league but they have caught up now imo.  Now the move seems to be on launch angle and hitting homers by getting the ball in the air but that seems to be across the league.  Obviously some teams have more money and more talented players but the strategy seems about the same.  The main differences I see is in pitching in the playoffs which is bullpen games and using openers rather then a starter to go 7 innings and carry your team to win now a slight sign of trouble they are taking them out.  With all these short inning guys and pitching them in certain pockets we are seeing very little offense and the hitting with runners in scoring position has been awful.  It all comes down to RISP at bats and getting 1 or 2 big base hits in those situations.  We just haven’t been able to get those hits so far in short series.
    • And we've seen similar with Kjerstad. Kjerstad might be the best pure hitting prospect in the Orioles system of recent years besides Gunnar. I want to see him playing everyday next year is possible none of this sitting him versus LHP more often than not. These prospects need to get their reps and stop treating them like John Lowenstein and Benny Ayala.
    • I don’t see Elias trading off prospects anymore at least top guys.  We have moved a few guys in last year and I expect they try to build that back up.  They should have money to use if they want to add talent.
    • Blah, well Rob Manfred has to be happy along with Fox network. A Yankees-Mets World Series match up is still on the table and the Dodgers as well if they win tomorrow. I knew the Royals would get jettisoned by the Yankees without too much of a fight.
