6th Round Pick -- Richard Zagone, LHP, Univ. of Missouri

Recommended Posts

Scouting Report

MissouriMissouri's Big 12 title hopes were dashed in late April when the Tigers were swept at Texas A&M, but they have still won four of their last five series and put themselves in position to earn a No. 2 seed in a regional with a series win against Nebraska this weekend. The Cornhuskers are fresh off a series win against the Aggies and are just a game and a half behind A&M heading into the weekend. One Big 12 coach whose team has played both teams broke down Missouri's chances against Nebraska and beyond.

(Rick) Zagone has got a good arm and has deception, he's definitely a pro prospect—he gives you a different look, and he is lefthanded. It'll be easy for (scouts) to look at him as a lefty who can get lefthanded hitters out for sure, and anything else is a bonus.

Lefty reliever I bet....Maybe someone they think can move fast?

Almost certainly chose him as a reliever. I sure hope they don't think he can move fast though unless they've spotted an obvious flaw they can fix quickly. Generally a fast mover is a guy who has had more success than two consecutive 5+ ERA seasons.

But if they make him exclusively a reliever, that could change him...His stuff could get a little better.

I like this pick...At this point in the draft, they may have gotten a good BP arm that could be here within 2 years.

Reading his profile at Missouri, it sounds like he's had some flashes of brilliance.

Here's a small batters view picture of his interesting release point. If that ball moves across the plate, lefties will have a tough time.

He did well in the Cape Cod League last summer.

You get some rep for getting those CCL stats. Makes me feel much better about this pick.

Now this is a pitcher's name :).

This does sound like someone who will be fast tracked as a reliever.

We have a massive logjam of starting pitching in the minors and there arent spots for some of the guys we have right now so I really think he will be moved to the bullpen.

From the video he definitely has that deception that could make him a really good left handed specialist.

1.01 WHIP in the CCL. Lack of velocity kind of scares me, but seems to be a decent pick for the 6th round.

  • 3 weeks later...

Saw Zagone pitch last night in Brooklyn.

He entered with a 3-1 lead and the tying runs on base in the bottom of the sixth and needed just three pitches to surrender a two-run double.

Other than that, he whiffed three in 2 2/3 scoreless innings and definitely stood out for his high-kicking, sidearming ways.

Not much velocity according to the gun at Keyspan Park, but with his quirkiness and left-handedness - I'm sure he'll get a long look.
