I turned on ESPN right before the game but had to turn it off because if Karl Ravich's lovefest had gotten any worse it would have been inappropriate for young audiences.

"The hallowed grounds of Yankee stadium..."  It's a new stadium for goodness sakes.  It used to be a parking lot.

Laughed out loud.  Thanks.

I'm praying that Judge is having one of those fluky-good rookie seasons and that he'll never be this good again.   He did have that one 48-game slump where he hit .181/.341/.337 and struck out 75 times.    I hope there's more of that in his future.    If not, it could be really scary playing the Yankees for the next 15 years.

I'm pretty sure that 48 game slump was better than anything Trumbo produced over any 48 game stretch this season.

I'm kidding.  Sort of.  Certainly from an OBP perspective it was better than anything Trumbo ever did.

I think he's going to be plenty good for years to come.  It's been bandied about a lot, but he fixed his chase rate from last year to this year.  That 48 game stretch, it got a little out of line so he bore down and stopped chasing as much.  He's disciplined and that's going to carry him through.

Imagine if Jones could lay off a low and outside slider.

It is very frustrating that they have a guy like Judge.  And what about Gregorius?  Where in the world did he come from and why is he better than Jeter?  And scrappy Gardner is the worst of all.  Watching these guys have great at-bats in October is going to be torture after seeing our best hitters routinely underperform in the playoffs.  I think it was in the 7th where Judge led off the inning....it was an at-bat with close pitches that would have struck out all of our hitters....yet he patiently stood up there and took the walk.  It almost isn't fair.

I've long held a theory that guys just get better on the Yankees.  There's something about that uniform and playing in NY that's just different.

As big as an Orioles fan as I am, I can't help it.  I hate the Yankees because I have to, but I also have a tremendous amount of respect for them, they're the single most important franchise in baseball history.   You can't tell the history of baseball without talking significantly about the Yankees.  I've always looked at it as they got a jolt when they got Babe Ruth and that set the tone for their franchise moving forward and they've been riding it ever since.  I freely admit that I'm jealous.  But I also think jealousy vocalized is admiration.

So when someone puts on that jersey and looks at themselves in the mirror and realizes they're wearing the same outfit that Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Mantle, Jeter and plenty of others have worn, it's gotta be one of the coolest feelings ever.

Guess I'm the ultimate Yankee hater. I refuse watch any baseball until they are knocked out of the playoffs, which, of course, could be never this year.

I don't hate them at all. They're a well run organization. Have good players. Wish the O's could or would begin to change the workings of the organization to become successfully run for years to come.

The Orioles can not afford to pay out 2 years (2017/2018)of $5.5 Million of a McCann type contract along with the final $21Million owed to ARod and then have a total of $225.2 Million in contracts for any year.  (Baseball Ref Contracts)

Moose Milligan has a very good point and it's frustrating as hell. "Guys seem to get better when they play for the Yankees." Didi Gregorious is a prime example. Was he this good in Arizona?

He was younger.   He has gotten gradually better, but more or less in line of what one might have expected/hoped for.

I do think that the Yankees emphasize plate discipline and passing the baton to a large degree, and players buy into it because (1) the team really stresses it, (2) the team has been very successful for a long time doing it, and (3) the surrounding players are very good and nobody feels like they need to carry the team.   Gregorius isn't the best example of that, since his walk rate is very low, but he also doesn't strike out a lot.

I think Gregarious is a good example. Go look at his stats as a Diamondback and look at his stats as a Yankee. It's night and day.

And you say he was younger. By what, a year?

He must be aging slower than the rest of us.  He played for the DBags, I mean DBacks, 3 years ago.

You're not following. He immediately became a better hitter when he was traded to the Yankees.

Good points... hate the Yankees on the field... off the field class acts. Had the opportunity of being their guest a few years ago.. sat in the dugout with Jeter.. I’m an O’s fan but that was a thrill. All the Yankees took time to talk to us with exception of ARod & Teixeria ...anyway it does seem Yankees find ways to win with minimal talent.. better managed & coached some one wote & I believe that’s true.. O’s play very uninspired ball.. so if/when Judge fizzles in the years to come O,s will get him to pair up with Davis K records

    • Good point, no other metropolitan area has more than one team.
    • Could it be that they allowed the Gnats to reside within 30 minutes of their home. Effectively cutting their market in half?
    • Got my all-time low rarity score on today's game - 6.
    • 41 freaking years and here's this guy with the name pickles telling me I should be happy with 91 wins and getting owned in the playoffs again. 😂 😂 I saw a team that looked terrible the second half and probably didn't even deserve that spot the way they were playing .
    • Lol. Here's the funny they know more then you know. Typical Oriole fan who's happy with getting punched in the mouth.
    • I don’t like the wall. I think it’s affecting our hitters. I’ve mentioned before that I think it has totally warped Mountcastle into something he was never really meant to be. The guy came up as a pull-heavy HR hitter, and in his first season-plus (725 PAs), he puts up 38 HRs and a 116 wRC+. Since then, the wRC+ is down to 110, and his approach has totally changed, with his pull numbers plummeting (down from 39% in 2021 to less than 28% this year). He still hits the ball hard, but constantly underachieves his batted ball data — probably because he’s trying to avoid the pull field and hitting balls to the deepest parts of pretty much every other park. Will the same thing happen to Mayo? Maybe he has more pure power, but it’s always going to be a challenge for a RH slugger to survive with that wall. So much harder to do damage.   Beyond that, I think it’s also creating a serious risk of changing our LH hitters’ approaches too. These guys (Henderson, Holliday, Cowser, 2/3 of Adley) have come up with a reputation for being able to drive the ball to all fields. But how long does that continue when they just can’t hit it out to the opposite field? Our LH hitters had a combined 44 wRC+ at OPACY, and only one HR. They had the 3rd most balls hit to LF at home by LHHs, but the lowest wRC+ of any team on those balls (for the second straight year). The Royals, ironically enough, were the only team that was lower than a 70 wRC+ — that’s how much worse our lefties fared going oppo (at OPACY) than everyone else’s. By player: Gunnar Henderson: 112 wRC+ / .160 ISO (51 PAs) Adley Rutschman: 10 wRC+ / .026 ISO (38 PAs) Anthony Santander: 14 wRC+ / .095 ISO (43 PAs) Colton Cowser: 58 wRC+ / .057 ISO (36 PAs) Ryan O’Hearn: 47 wRC+ / .091 ISO (55 PAs) Cedric Mullins: 23 wRC+ / .100 ISO (41 PAs) Jackson Holliday: -72 wRC+ / .000 ISO (16 PAs)   On the road, they had a combined 126 wRC+ (with 9 HRs) going to left field, so it’s not like they’re bad at it. It’s just Death Valley out there in LF for them at OPACY.  How long will it be until these LH guys just start going full pull-happy? Essentially, the opposite of what’s happened with Mountcastle. When (a) your team’s philosophy is to focus on doing damage and (b) you can’t DO damage to the opposite field — the rational endpoint is just to try to pull everything. I don’t think that’s a good outcome. I think it makes them much worse hitters in the other 81 games, and I think it’s a terrible waste of a bunch of really talented hitters with all-field abilities.
