How did the Yankees end up with Judge? SMH. Jeter retires and now they got a HR hitting machine. And judging (excuse the pun) by last night, the moment isn't too big for this kid.

Not only that, I see a young team that seem like the polar opposite of the way the O's finished the season. They rose to the occasion while we shrunk when the games got bigger.

Judge is an extremely interesting development story, no one thought he'd be THIS good.  In addition to tapping into all of his raw power in games(which he didn't do in the minors), he also cut down on pop outs by 75% and when pitchers started pitching around him, he just walked more.

Just wait until they add Manny in 19. They and the Sox will be on top for a good while.

I'm praying that Judge is having one of those fluky-good rookie seasons and that he'll never be this good again.   He did have that one 48-game slump where he hit .181/.341/.337 and struck out 75 times.    I hope there's more of that in his future.    If not, it could be really scary playing the Yankees for the next 15 years.

I had totally forgotten about the Wild Card game and flipped it on in maybe the 2nd inning. I tuned in just as Gardner was going into the dugout out after his HR. Kind of kept the game in the background, but it was such a slow moving game, that I just lost interest in it. I think it was after the Judge HR that I turned it off. I am just disinterested at this point. I may perk up over the weekend.

It is very frustrating that they have a guy like Judge.  And what about Gregorius?  Where in the world did he come from and why is he better than Jeter?  And scrappy Gardner is the worst of all.  Watching these guys have great at-bats in October is going to be torture after seeing our best hitters routinely underperform in the playoffs.  I think it was in the 7th where Judge led off the inning....it was an at-bat with close pitches that would have struck out all of our hitters....yet he patiently stood up there and took the walk.  It almost isn't fair.

Hate is such a strong word to disguise jealousy.  Unless your a teenage girl.

There's definitely jealousy. I'm looking at a potential dynasty in the making while we're just happy to finish 500.

Don't worry.   In five years Judge will be a free agent, the Yankees will have done nothing proactive to lock him up, and we can simply outbid them for his services.    B|

Sounds like its a testament to their coaching, but even more of a testament to the kid's intelligence and drive.  I want to hate him, and I am extremely jealous that the Yankees have him, but from all I've watched and read about the him, he plays the game the right way, so I can't hate him. He seems to be the antithesis of Ortiz or Bautista.  If that remains the case, it will definitely soften the blow of him hitting 500 foot homers off us a liiiitle bit for the next 10 years for me.

I turned on ESPN right before the game but had to turn it off because if Karl Ravich's lovefest had gotten any worse it would have been inappropriate for young audiences.

"The hallowed grounds of Yankee stadium..."  It's a new stadium for goodness sakes.  It used to be a parking lot.

    • 41 freaking years and here's this guy with the name pickles telling me I should be happy with 91 wins and getting owned in the playoffs again. 😂 😂 I saw a team that looked terrible the second half and probably didn't even deserve that spot the way they were playing .
    • Lol. Here's the funny they know more then you know. Typical Oriole fan who's happy with getting punched in the mouth.
    • I don’t like the wall. I think it’s affecting our hitters. I’ve mentioned before that I think it has totally warped Mountcastle into something he was never really meant to be. The guy came up as a pull-heavy HR hitter, and in his first season-plus (725 PAs), he puts up 38 HRs and a 116 wRC+. Since then, the wRC+ is down to 110, and his approach has totally changed, with his pull numbers plummeting (down from 39% in 2021 to less than 28% this year). He still hits the ball hard, but constantly underachieves his batted ball data — probably because he’s trying to avoid the pull field and hitting balls to the deepest parts of pretty much every other park. Will the same thing happen to Mayo? Maybe he has more pure power, but it’s always going to be a challenge for a RH slugger to survive with that wall. So much harder to do damage.   Beyond that, I think it’s also creating a serious risk of changing our LH hitters’ approaches too. These guys (Henderson, Holliday, Cowser, 2/3 of Adley) have come up with a reputation for being able to drive the ball to all fields. But how long does that continue when they just can’t hit it out to the opposite field? Our LH hitters had a combined 44 wRC+ at OPACY, and only one HR. They had the 3rd most balls hit to LF at home by LHHs, but the lowest wRC+ of any team on those balls (for the second straight year). The Royals, ironically enough, were the only team that was lower than a 70 wRC+ — that’s how much worse our lefties fared going oppo (at OPACY) than everyone else’s. By player: Gunnar Henderson: 112 wRC+ / .160 ISO (51 PAs) Adley Rutschman: 10 wRC+ / .026 ISO (38 PAs) Anthony Santander: 14 wRC+ / .095 ISO (43 PAs) Colton Cowser: 58 wRC+ / .057 ISO (36 PAs) Ryan O’Hearn: 47 wRC+ / .091 ISO (55 PAs) Cedric Mullins: 23 wRC+ / .100 ISO (41 PAs) Jackson Holliday: -72 wRC+ / .000 ISO (16 PAs)   On the road, they had a combined 126 wRC+ (with 9 HRs) going to left field, so it’s not like they’re bad at it. It’s just Death Valley out there in LF for them at OPACY.  How long will it be until these LH guys just start going full pull-happy? Essentially, the opposite of what’s happened with Mountcastle. When (a) your team’s philosophy is to focus on doing damage and (b) you can’t DO damage to the opposite field — the rational endpoint is just to try to pull everything. I don’t think that’s a good outcome. I think it makes them much worse hitters in the other 81 games, and I think it’s a terrible waste of a bunch of really talented hitters with all-field abilities.
    • Which core players beside Adley Rutschman struggled?
    • The entire commentary on Hyde and the team seems odd but have to admit there does seem to be something off.   Team seemed adrift for most of the 2nd half.  A very talented team went off the rails midway through the season mostly due to core players struggling and rookies not performing or filling in adequately for a few injured starters.    None of the position player trade line acquisitions performed that well.     Hyde seemed in over his head or at a loss on how to correct things, but he must have convinced Elias that he has a plan to fix things.  Curious to see what happens with the coaching staff.
