The sentence structure led me to believe you were talking about Roberts.

No offense Wildcard, but Brach neither has the delivery or the endurance to be a starter. He's a very good setup man and that's his role. Of the current options, Castro is the best option to be tried as a starter.

Bleier has had some success in the minors, but I don't think his stuff will play a 3rd time through an order. He's a sinker slider guy with a below average changeup. With command, for a few innings that can work, but I just couldn't see him as 6 or 7 inning pitcher. He's probably a 5.20 ERA guy as a starter which of course is better than what we got from the "Trio of Terrible" last year, but I think the Orioles would want a little more upside to their starting pitcher options.

If I'm the Orioles, I'm stretching Castro out, and I'm trying to get two starters this offseason. I think Tyler Chatwood is someone they should target if the years and money is right. Same thing with Cobb. I'd also be willing to give Tillman an incentive laden deal that would put the Orioles on the hook for much guaranteed money in case he really is done.

Thanks.

I expect Cobb to get a contract well above what the O's will pay.   The O's may be in on Chatwood but if the ompeting teams have more of a pitcher's park or are contenders then the O's probably lose out.

The thought on Brach is that the O's will loses out on FA starter after FA starter.  The O's may make a trade for a starter but the O's need to add at least 3, maybe 4 starters.   As ST rolls around Brach may be a more interesting reliever to convert to a starter in ST.   We will see.

I agree Castro gets a chance in to start in ST.  I don't think  Buck thinks Bleier has the stuff to be a successful starter in the majors.

Bach has never started ever, even back in college? If my memory serves me right.

I have to agreed with Tony-OH on this one, Bach converting to a starter is a real long shot.

Come ST the O's may be looking for long shots.

Brach started in college:

Quickly: New Jersey Pitcher of the Year in 2006... Second-team all-conference as a sophomore... Set single-season strikeout record with 82 last season... Control-oriented pitcher... Led the team in wins two straight seasons... Coastal Plains League All-Star this summer with the Petersburg Generals... New Jersey All-Rookie Team in 2005.

2006: Set Monmouth single-season record with 82 strikeouts in 84.2 innings... Made 13 starts... Led the conference with 2.44 ERA, which ranks fifth in MU history... Team-leader in wins with six... Tossed six complete games... Surrendered 10 walks... Opened season with four-strikeout performance at Houston (2/26)... Earned MU's first-ever win over UCF (3/4), working 7.2 innings of scoreless ball, scattering threee hits, while striking out six batters... Struck out seven in 8.0 innings versus St. Bonaventure... Struck out eight batters in 8.0 innings at Navy (3/18)... Earned a complete game victory over St. Francis (3/25), while allowing three hits and striking out five hitters... Posted complete game win with eight Ks at Long Island (4/1)... Struck out nine in complete game shutout of Mount St. Mary's (4/14)... Posted complete game win over FDU (4/23) with six punchouts... Earned complete game shutout, scattering three hits, at Sacred Heart (4/29), while striking out eight... Notched a career-best 11 strikeouts in 9.2 innings of work versus Quinnipiac (5/6).

2005: Team-leader in wins with six... Posted a 6-4 record... Ranked fifth on the squad with 4.37 ERA... Ranked 11th in the conference in ERA... Ranked third on the team with 41 strikeouts... Appeared in 13 games, making nine starts... Tied for the team-lead with two complete games... Worked 59.2 innings... Made collegiate debut and first career start at No. 26 UCF (2/26), working 5.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits... Earned first career win with 6.0 inning effort versus Penn (3/6), striking out five batters... Credited with victory after tossing 2.2 innings against Maine (3/19)... Worked 6.0 innings while sitting down a career-high seven batters at Seton Hall (4/5)... Earned win at Lafayette (4/12)... Surrendered one earned run on five hits in 7.0 innings with six strikeouts at St. Francis [N.Y.] (4/17)... Collected fifth win by throwing 7.2 innings with three K's against Rider (4/26)... Fashioned a 9.0 inning, complete game, six-hit victory over Sacred Heart (5/22) in the NEC Tournament.

The only pitcher with less of a chance of being converted to a reliever is O'day. Brach will be a setup man next year unless he's trade this offseason.

You can't possibly think any of that is pertinent now can you? Brach has been a reliever his entire professional career. There's a very real reason for that which I've already explained. I betcha he was a hell of a high school starter though! ;)

These are tired narratives.

Again, the biggest reason Brach isn't a starter is his delivery.  Also, I bet that 95-96mph fastball would be 91-92 as a starter.

Its a tired narrative that FA pitchers don't like to pitch in in pitchers parks and that FA pitchers do like to pitch for contenders?

    • Good point, no other metropolitan area has more than one team.
    • Could it be that they allowed the Gnats to reside within 30 minutes of their home. Effectively cutting their market in half?
    • Got my all-time low rarity score on today's game - 6.
    • 41 freaking years and here's this guy with the name pickles telling me I should be happy with 91 wins and getting owned in the playoffs again. 😂 😂 I saw a team that looked terrible the second half and probably didn't even deserve that spot the way they were playing .
    • Lol. Here's the funny they know more then you know. Typical Oriole fan who's happy with getting punched in the mouth.
    • I don’t like the wall. I think it’s affecting our hitters. I’ve mentioned before that I think it has totally warped Mountcastle into something he was never really meant to be. The guy came up as a pull-heavy HR hitter, and in his first season-plus (725 PAs), he puts up 38 HRs and a 116 wRC+. Since then, the wRC+ is down to 110, and his approach has totally changed, with his pull numbers plummeting (down from 39% in 2021 to less than 28% this year). He still hits the ball hard, but constantly underachieves his batted ball data — probably because he’s trying to avoid the pull field and hitting balls to the deepest parts of pretty much every other park. Will the same thing happen to Mayo? Maybe he has more pure power, but it’s always going to be a challenge for a RH slugger to survive with that wall. So much harder to do damage.   Beyond that, I think it’s also creating a serious risk of changing our LH hitters’ approaches too. These guys (Henderson, Holliday, Cowser, 2/3 of Adley) have come up with a reputation for being able to drive the ball to all fields. But how long does that continue when they just can’t hit it out to the opposite field? Our LH hitters had a combined 44 wRC+ at OPACY, and only one HR. They had the 3rd most balls hit to LF at home by LHHs, but the lowest wRC+ of any team on those balls (for the second straight year). The Royals, ironically enough, were the only team that was lower than a 70 wRC+ — that’s how much worse our lefties fared going oppo (at OPACY) than everyone else’s. By player: Gunnar Henderson: 112 wRC+ / .160 ISO (51 PAs) Adley Rutschman: 10 wRC+ / .026 ISO (38 PAs) Anthony Santander: 14 wRC+ / .095 ISO (43 PAs) Colton Cowser: 58 wRC+ / .057 ISO (36 PAs) Ryan O’Hearn: 47 wRC+ / .091 ISO (55 PAs) Cedric Mullins: 23 wRC+ / .100 ISO (41 PAs) Jackson Holliday: -72 wRC+ / .000 ISO (16 PAs)   On the road, they had a combined 126 wRC+ (with 9 HRs) going to left field, so it’s not like they’re bad at it. It’s just Death Valley out there in LF for them at OPACY.  How long will it be until these LH guys just start going full pull-happy? Essentially, the opposite of what’s happened with Mountcastle. When (a) your team’s philosophy is to focus on doing damage and (b) you can’t DO damage to the opposite field — the rational endpoint is just to try to pull everything. I don’t think that’s a good outcome. I think it makes them much worse hitters in the other 81 games, and I think it’s a terrible waste of a bunch of really talented hitters with all-field abilities.
