The Baltimore Orioles used 17 players in the line-up on this day in 1983 as they fell to the Oakland Athletics 4-3 at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.

Jim Palmer struggled though 3.2 innings by surrendering 7 hits and 4 earned runs; he also walked 4 and struck out 3 and committed a balk.

John Lowenstein was the lone bright light for the Birds in the game as he went 1 for 2 with a double and 2 RBI before being pinch hit for by Gary Roenicke: no other Orioles hitter had a multi-hit game.

Winning pitcher Chris Codiroli stymied the Orioles over 7.0 innings of work.  He allowed just 4 hits and was responsible for 2 earned runs.  Additionally, he walked 4 and struck out 1.

Season Record: 9-8

Interesting to note that Manager Joe Altobelli pinch-hit for starting catcher Rick Dempsey in the eighth and then pinch-hit for his replacement, Joe Nolan, in the ninth.

Wonder who he would have put in to catch in the bottom of the ninth if the Orioles had tied the score or gone ahead in the top half?
