With the Orioles desperately clinging to a 9-4 lead in the bottom of the 8th inning, Joseph Anthony Mancini hit a Sac-Fly to give the Orioles a much-needed insurance run.

Later in the same inning inning, Chris Davis added 2 more runs for the Birds with a double to increase the lead even more.

Good for Mancini, but "much needed?"

Even with Mancini's SF, the Orioles remain in last place in that category.

I was being facetious (along with my "desperately clinging" comment in regard to the Orioles' lead at the time.)

They’ve also had the fewest sac fly opportunities, by a pretty wide margin.   They’ve cashed in on 12.4% of their opportunities, compared to league average 13.0%.    So, slightly below average in execution, but way below average in opportunity (209 PA with runner on 3B and less than 2 outs, compared to 260 league average).

BACK-TO-BACK SAC FLIES !!! ll O.o

Manny Machado AND Danny Valencia BOTH hit Sac-Flies that began with a runner on 2nd base and 0 outs, in the top of the 6th inning.

Adam Jones advanced to 3rd base on Machado's Sac-Fly, then scored on Valencia's Sac-Fly, increasing the Orioles' lead to 3-0.

It happened again.

As Frobby pointed out, a runner tagging up and going from 1st to 2nd or from 2nd to 3rd after the ball is caught is not officially a Sac-Fly, but the Orioles essentially got that in back-to-back Plate Appearances.

Boyce Cedric Mullins led the inning off with a double.

Jonathan Villar hit a long fly ball, which allowed Mullins to tag up and go to 3rd (not officially a Sac-Fly, but he hit the ball long enough to advance the runner from the previous base that he had been on.)

On the very next play Trey Mancini brought Mullins home with a Sac-Fly, cutting the Orioles' deficit in the game to 3-2.

(vs. MARINERS, 9/04)

Ona CRAZY play, an Oriole base-runner scored from 2nd base on a long fly ball.

It was not officially a Sac-Fly because of the circumstances of the play, but Roy can't ask for more than that ........ a runner tagging up and scoring from 2nd base.
