Chris Lee probably cost himself a call up yesterday.   He now has a 1.47 WHIP.    O's may sign him this winter to a minor league contract as a left-handed reliever at AAA.  He just turned 26.

The subtraction of Lee and Gonzalez means the call ups are down to 15.

I still feel like he has been terribly mishandled.  If he leaves, he's another that I think will do well with another organization.

Mishandled how?   Bounced up and down too many times?   I think his performance dictated that.

Roch today:

“The organization will decide how many players to remove from the Norfolk roster while the Tides are still chasing a wild card spot.”

Earth to Roch: by going 3-11 over the last 14 games, the Tides were eliminated from wild card contention yesterday.

Should have been used as a LOOGY only.  Tried to make him a 2 inning guy.  All those trips up and down would leave me feeling lousy.  In 2016, 62% of the batters he faced were LH. In 2017, only 47% were against lefties.  I can't speak for 2018 as 60% of the batters he faced were LH, but with his constant shuttling back and forth, it might all be in his head now.

Maybe not all at once, but sometime during the month.

Players on the 40 man roster that should be recalled:

Pitchers

1-3.  Carroll, Phillips and Yacabonis   Yacabonis has pitched 92.2 innings so far and the AAA season has 7 games left.   He has never pitched over 82 innings before.

4.  Araujo.  Call him up around the 14th and have him fulfill his Rule 5 requirement. I don't care if he pitches or not.

Catcher

5. Sisco

Infielders

6-7.   Wilkerson and Valera.  Wilkerson activated from the DL

Outfielder:

8-9.  Hays and Rickard

Players added to the 40 man roster:

Starters:

10-11.  Means and Ortiz   Means has pitch 151.1 innings so far.  He has never pitched over 146 inning before.

Relievers:

12-15.   Kline,  Luis Gonzalez, Chris Lee and Flaa.  They have made Chris Lee a reliever at AA and he has responded well.   They need to determine if these guys should be on the 40 man roster over the winter. Kline is coming off TJ surgery.  Has pitched well but can't pitch often.  The O's will be careful with him.

Catcher:

16.  Cervenka  If they are considering non tendering  Joseph they should take a look at Cervanka.

Outfielder

17.   Mike Yastrzemski    Yaz may be a bridge to Hays and Diaz if they  are determined to need more time in minors in ST.   If Jones and Gentry are gone then only Mancini, Mullins and Rickard are left.  Stewart  hasn't hit for 2 months. He needs more time at AAA.  Yaz has outplayed him.

7 current players that should move off the 40 man roster to make room.

1-3 Hart, Marinez, Peterson,  Have no options left next year.

4. Gentry  Should be released early in Sept if he is not traded in August.   That way he can find a contender that needs is speed.

5. Andreoli.   He may stay of a week or so in September but so far he has not shown enough to get playing time over Hays, Rickard and Yaz

6. Vielma.   Put him on the 60 day DL or release him.  I don't see how he stays on the 40 man roster through the Rule 5 draft.

7. Trumbo   Place him on the 60 day DL

How do the O's add 8 to the 40 man roster and move 7 off?   Some get send to Sarasota on the taxis squad after the minor league season ends.  When players get injured they go on the 60 day DL which makes room for players from Sarasota.

With pitch limits in effect on some of the minor league pitchers they will not pitch that much or that often.  Getting plenty of rest between outings.

Rickard, Sisco, Valera and Yacabonis are up.    Gentry and Marinez off the roster.   Additional players to be added today or tomorrow..

It has been announced that Araujo will not pitch any more this season because of injury.  He will probably be on the O's 25 man roster for 17 days to begin 2019.

Wilkerson is still injured but is scheduled to play in the AFL.  Hays will join him in the AFL.   No word on whether either will be called up before the end off the month.

Buck not in favor on bringing  Kline up after he has pitched 65.2  innings coming off TJ surgery. But Buck likes what he has seen on video from him.

Luis Gonzalez and Chris Lee both pitched poorly to end the season after having some good performances during the season.   Probably not in consideration for the promotion.

There has been talk of shutting Rogers down.   Buck says he will use Yacabonis very carefully.     It would appear the O's need a few more pitchers to get through September.

    • I really hope the Ravens win this one. I hate all Washington teams and always root for them to lose but especially if they are playing Baltimore teams
    • I really don’t see the point of trading Mullins, or even Mountcastle for a reliever. We need Mullins definitely, especially with Santander being a FA.  What good is a reliever if you can’t get a lead?  I just don’t like trading everyday players for relievers, especially when we have a good looking pen next year pre deadline, and what reliever would Mounty/Mullins even buy. Would that reliever even be an upgrade over what we already have? At this point, I’m thinking Mounty goes for some sort of RHH COF.
    • We couldn’t have asked for more from the Eflin deal than what we got. 9 starts that kept the rotation afloat to even make the playoffs. Then a “good” playoff start in an elimination game where we had the luxury of going to the pen fast.  It’s always tough giving up prospects, but Eflin did exactly what we needed him to do post deadline.
    • There should be one philosophy, and that's what the O's claimed to have. There's just a lot more work to coaching 13 hitters (plus callups) than one person can do. Going through video, coordinating with the data folks, developing a plan, all that stuff. Only so many hours in the day.
    • I have no idea why any team would want more than 1 philosophy across the board, especially a young team. Possibly a player's demands or contract calls for his own hitting coach.. but I stand by my wish.
    • At cost considerations there is 2 players i'd rather have listed in that article over Crochet, Helsley leading that. Also Mountcastle to the Reds for a SP makes a lot of sense also.
    • Guilty. I'm working to be intentional to enjoy the day to day of a lot of exciting careers beginning, and not miss the moment as during say Peyton Manning's career in a different chapter of life when assured 14-2 or 13-3 seasons were four months of boredom while you waited to see what the playoff stumble would be this time.    SIGBOT's stuff works in the regular season same as Billy Beane's didn't in the playoffs. I don't follow Over/Unders, but would guess the 2025 Orioles are 1st or 2nd in the AL on early action.    My informal AL power rankings end of 2024: 1. A nonexistent Orioles team with a functional Adley Rutschman 2. Yankees with Soto 3. Tie between actual Orioles with broken Adley and end stage Astros that lost several series to hot Central teams 4. Yankees without Soto 5. Central I'm cheating Cleveland there for a joke, and hope they win, which they are plenty capable of doing.    It is an interesting matchup for the stuff the two teams are good at being very different.
